Christmas greetings in the Lord to all, I hope this message finds you safe and healthy. I want to send my Christmas blessings upon all of you. Remembering this year, that as our celebrations may not be as grand, we may not be able to have large gatherings. That the salvation of the world came in something not grand, something not large, just in a newborn child in a manger with just a few around Him. I thank all of those who have persevered in their faith at this time of physical separation from loved ones. Our faith in our Lord Jesus Christ is something that we can choose to carry with us throughout our life. In the goodness of God, we can offer prayers for loved ones who are not physically present to us. Just as Christ, entering into humanity, was an offering for people of all times and places. Let us not be discouraged, rather let us be a people of hope, a people of offering, that will not let the present circumstances slow us down. Again, a Blessed and Merry Christmas to you all. I continue to keep my parishes of St. Alexander and St. John the Apostle in my thoughts and prayers. Fr. Rosenbaum.

St. John of the Cross—1542-91, Doctor of the Church, reformer of the Carmelite order, and one of the greatest of Catholic mystics and Spanish poets. He entered the Carmelite order in 1563, taking the name of John of St. Matthias. He studied in Salamanca (1554-68) and was ordained in 1567. That same year John met Teresa of Avila, who persuaded him to collaborate in the reform of the order. On November 11, 1568, his name changed to John of the Cross, he assumed the Primitive Rule and helped to found the first monastery of the reform. He was sequently rector of the college at Alcala and then confessor of the Carmelite nuns at Incarnation in Avila, where Teresa was prioress. Kidnapped by Carmelites hostile to the reform, he was harshly imprisoned in Toledo where he began to write his greatest poetry. He escaped from this prison and continued to write mystical poems and to compose Scholastic theology becoming a hermeneutic of the religious experience contained in these art objects. John, held various positions within the reformed (“Discalced”) Carmelites and underwent significant persecution at the end of his life. John of the Cross was the author of such spiritual classics as the Ascent of Mount Carmel and Dark Night of the Soul. John of the Cross was canonized ion 1726 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1926. Feast Day: December 14.
