Welcome back! Summer is slowly slipping away and autumn is waiting to grace us with new beauty. The evening will grace us with crisp cool air as we open our homes and windows to autumn. As I age, autumn is becoming my favorite time year. The evenings are brisk and Mother Nature will gown herself in array of foliage. These assortments of colored leaves or silhouette landscapes will mes-merize the observer. “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” ― Albert Camus Mother Nature adorns herself in cinnamon and brown sugar so we may enjoy her beauty. This season speaks as if to say, “The wait is now over and I saved all this beauty for you” as the colors burst and display a final grandstand of amazement.
Finally, in amazement, the trees give the ground a final present, the present of leaves. As the winds gracefully grasp the leaves and send this memento of love. In the preparation to send a message, the leaves blush in bright red colors as the limbs release each leaf and then kisses the ground.
Here are 5 reasons I love Fall
Fall Foliage
As you have read, I love the beauty that fall brings.
Driving around and looking at different tree-lined
streets or going on a nature hike is amazing. To see
the awning of red, gold, and orange leaves is so
captivating.
Fall Clothes
Fall fashion is the best. The cool air allows me the
opportunity to wear long sleeves and not have to
worry about sweating so intensely. There are so
many options to layer up and stay warm during the
autumn months and I look slimmer. Plus, fall
clothes look good on everyone. All Things Pumpkin
As soon as September rolls around, your taste buds
will salivate for all things pumpkin. After living in
Pennsylvania for the last 19 years, pumpkin delica-
cies are not bad (says the southerner). Pumpkin
lattes to ales, pies to waffles, everything gets a deli-
cious pumpkin makeover and my taste buds have
grown rather fond of the pumpkin. Football Seasons And honestly, can one imagine life without football. It does not matter if it’s college, high school, pee-wee, or professional, its football. The cheering, band music, cheerleaders, and the wave of emotions are wonderful. The fans and players gets pumped and nothing else matter but what is happening from goal post to goal post.
And Thanksgiving The time of year to reflect and give God thanks! Family and friends gather for these festive seasons. Loved ones pause as they remember family mem-bers who were serenaded by angels, and in that mo-ment, you feel the longing of those who went ahead of us. You say your grace and, because you know that your loved one will want you to live life to the fullness, you reconnect to family and friends around the table. And again you try to enjoy those around you. Yes! The lump in your throat and slightly mis-firing of your heart remind you that you were loved by the greatest person who left you. Therefore, you bow your head and give thanks because you know deep within VICTORY won! Autumn is among us and everything beautiful burst into the air. Mother Nature reminds us that we are never alone. And even more, the words of scripture are true. Jesus will never leave us as orphans but will be with us always. This is why I love autumn.

From the Christian Education Corner by Angie Michael Tailgate Sunday is returning on Sunday, September 6, to kick off our Christian Connection year, and it's better than ever! Join us at 9 a.m.--all ages welcome--for games, crafts, and fellowship outdoors (weather permitting). This year will feature the debut of St. John's Fowling! What is fowling you ask? Well, you'll have to come out to Tailgate Sunday to find out! We'll go inside at 10:30 a.m. for worship. After worship, we'll have a tailgate picnic outdoors
The Christian Education Committee is running a new fundraiser this fall: we are selling Fall flower bulbs from the Dutch Mill Bulb company (they are out of Hershey, PA!). The sale will run from September 13, to October 4. Come September 13 there will be two ways you can place your order. Order. 1. You can see any Christian Education Committee member to view the sale pamphlet (there are some lovely bulbs for sale!) and there will also be a a sale pamphlet and order form posted on the bulletin board in the social hall; money will be due by October 4 so that we can place the order that week; bulbs will arrive within 2 weeks of order placement and will be distributed to buyers the Sunday after shipment arrival. Order 2. You can go to the church website to place your order through our fundraiser link--you will need to use a credit card to pay for your order which will be shipped directly to you by Dutch Mill
Bulb if you choose the online option. If you have any friends who are gardeners, please share the online link with them! We wanted to try something different as a fundraiser, and if this is a success, we may sell bulbs each fall. If you have any questions or would like to take an order form home to share with friends or neighbors, please see Angela Michael or Jodie Fields.
CONGREGATIONAL LIFE REPORT BY Jean Ann Grimes
We helped at this year’s outdoor service at Lion’s Park by having guessing games after the church
service. We also made sure that drinks, cups, plates, and utensils were provided.
The next church event that our committee will be helping with is the Vesper Service and Picnic at
Memorial Lake on Sunday, August 30th. We will provide the hot dogs, rolls an paper goods.
Our committee consists of just three members. Anyone is welcome to join our group. You may contact
either Pat Ziegler, Jean Ann Grimes or Aleta Babe if you are interested.
BIBLE STUDY WILL RESUME ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2015
We invite all members and friends of St. John's to join us every Wednesday at noon. We invite you to bring a sandwich.
We hope to see you some Wednesday!

Thank you! Sharon and I felt welcomed from Day One at St. John's. When I was informed of my
lung cancer, and shared that with the congregation, your love and caring quickly
became evident. Now that I am well on my way to recovery (slowly) I want to thank
each of you for your prayers, your cards, and your phone calls. Truly Sharon and I
felt the love of God flowing from you, our family at St. John's. May we continue to
travel together as we discover God's future for St. John's.
Pastor Herb & Sharon Hibshman
Music and Worship Committee by Louise Walmer
Five committee members met after church on Sunday, July 26. Sharon led our devotions.
The outdoor worship service and church picnic at Lion’s Park on August 9th was discussed. Robin will confirm that the park is reserved. Charlene will touch base with Congregational Life Committee to ask if they need any help from us for the picnic. Louise will contact Donna to be sure the bulletin indicates the congregation shall bring “a dish to share and a lawn chair”.
Our 3rd Sunday for the Youth to participate will be on Aug 30. Committee members will get the youth to be Greeters, distribute bulletins, Acolyte, read scripture, do the children’s message, and serve as ushers. The August Deacon of the Month does not need to fill these volunteer positions that day.
On Aug 30 we plan to have a picnic and vesper worship at Memorial Lake. The picnic will begin at 5pm and the vesper service at 6:30pm. Robin and Louise will make sure we have a pavilion reserved by the lake and directions to that pavilion. Gary Emery has been asked to provide music accompaniment for our singing. The Music and Worship Committee will provide hot dogs, rolls and paper goods for this event. Attendees will be asked to bring snacks or a side dish to share and of course their lawn chairs. We are planning to have 12 luminaries and candle lighting as part of the vesper service.
Regular Choir Rehearsals will begin again starting Wednesday, September 9th—See you there, and bring a friend who loves to sing. The more the merrier.
Pastor Tony will be on vacation Sunday, August 23rd. Robin will contact Pastor Dave Martin to lead us in worship that day.
Next meeting of our committee is scheduled for Tuesday, September 15th at 7pm. Charlene will lead our devotions.

St. John’s Fellowship by Ginny Knapp
Plans for the Fall flea Market and Bake Sale were made during the meeting of St. John’s
Fellowship. The sale will be held Friday, September, 11th and Saturday, September
12th. Please check your closets and cupboards for items you are no longer using. Your
trash is someone’s treasure!
Discussion was held on the cleaning and waxing of the social hall’s flooring. The fellow-
ship will have this done after the flea market. Another project, washing the church
windows, was recently completed.
Kass Myers reported on the Wounded Warrior information. She found a nearby soldier
who has been disabled and we will contribute to his needs. Cedar Haven will be
contacted to set a date for our annual Holiday Party for their residents. Poinsettias will
be used to adorn the sanctuary. Robin Gingrich will act as chairman for this Christmas
project.
Jean Ann Grimes announced vacancies on the coffee and punch detail for November &
December. Plans for a Christmas dinner were made. Priscilla Rentschler will call for
possible restaurants. More details to follow.
The next meeting, Tuesday, September 8th at 6:30 PM will be to set up for the flea
market. The regular session will follow the set up.
Christian: It’s Not What You Think … by Julie Ditzler Join us on Sunday mornings for a closer look at what it means to be a Christian. Help us
explore the meaning of the one word Jesus gave his followers to define them and their role
in the world. Our group will base our discussion on a DVD Bible study prepared by Andy
Stanley, noted Christian author and pastor. Christian Connection begins at 9:00 A.M.
with devotions, followed by our discussions. Our new session begins on September 13th.
Please consider being part of it!
New Ringing Season by Julie Ditzler The St. John’s Bell Choir will begin a new season of ringing with the anthem for church
on September 27th. Throughout the church year, the bell choir generally provides the
anthem for the fourth Sunday of the month. We meet a couple of times during the
month to practice. Participation in this activity is offered on a month-by-month basis.
Would you like to give it a try? Reading music is helpful but not required – all you really
need to be able to do is count and recognize colors! Ask any of us ding-a-lings! If you are
interested, please speak with Julie Ditzler.
New Voice Policy At its August meeting, Consistory voted to change the publication of our church newslet-
ter, The Voice, to a bi-monthly rather than monthly basis. This practice is on a trial basis
to determine whether this makes preparation and distribution easier for those involved.
This issue, covering church news and events for September and October, is the first to
reflect this change. Please address any comments or ideas pertaining to this change to a
consistory member.

Operation Christmas Child by Julie Ditzler Yes, it’s that time of year again! St. John’s elves have already begun gathering boxes
and items to pack in them for this year’s contribution to Operation Christmas Child. In
fact, we’re off to such a great start, I think this year could be another 100-box year for
us!
For those who are unfamiliar with this program, we participate in the annual gathering
of gift-filled shoeboxes by Samaritan’s Purse. Our boxes join millions of others to be dis-
tributed in places of need all around the world. It is a joyful project that is fun for us to
work on together and to spread God’s love to children around the globe.
Since filling and wrapping the boxes is something we like to do together, we handle our
collection of boxes and items a little differently than some churches do. Throughout the
months of September, October, and early November, we gather the items that we need.
Suggestions from Samaritan’s Purse include the following:
Toys: Include items that children will immediately embrace such as toy cars, yo-yos,
jump ropes, balls, toys that light up and make noise (with extra batteries), etc.
School Supplies: pens, pencils and sharpeners, crayons, markers, notebooks, paper,
solar calculators, coloring and picture books, etc.
Non-liquid Hygiene Items: toothbrushes, bar soap, combs, washcloths, etc.
Accessories: T-shirts, socks, hats, sunglasses, hair clips, jewelry, watches, flashlights
(with extra batteries), etc.
Age and Gender-Specific Ideas:
Girls 2-4, Girls 5-9, Girls 10-14,
Boys 2-4, Boys 5-9, Boys 10-14.
There are a few of these items that we try to ensure for each of our boxes, but, as you can
see, there is also lots of room for individual choice in your contribution. An Operation
Christmas Child poster will be available in the social hall with cards listing what is still
needed for our basic supplies. Toys, candy, and accessory items are included in our box-
es but not listed specifically with our supplies. If you have any questions about your ide-
as, please see the Operation Christmas Child website, or speak to Julie Ditzler.
Last year Joe and I had the opportunity to participate in Operation Christmas Child at
the regional level. We traveled to a warehouse in the Baltimore/Washington area and
helped hundreds of other volunteers prepare shoeboxes to be placed into cartons for
shipping. It was a wonderful experience – we met some great people and had a good
time – and we would like to go again. Registration to volunteer for this experience is
open on Monday, September 14th. If you would like to join us, please speak to me be-
fore that date, so you can be registered as part of our group.
Neighbors In Need Offering: October 4th & October 11th we will be collecting the Neighbors in Need offering, which
is one of the four special offerings of the UCC. This offering supports the UCC’s minis-
tries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. You will find the special
NIN envelopes in the pews starting October 4th. We ask that you be generous with this
mission offering.
Financial Report by Robin Getz, Finance Chair

Hinklefest Community Choir The Hinklefest Community Choir will sing once again this year! Down by the River to Pray
will be our selection and there will be one practice on Wednesday, September 16th at 7:00 PM at St. John’s UCC. The Outdoor worship service will be at the Hinklefest, September 20th at 10:30 AM at Fireman’s Park.
EVANGLISM REPORT by Neal Grimes
This year’s National Night Out proved to be very successful. It was our 8th year to celebrate with the community this very important event. The main goal of this event is to send a message about neighbor-hood unity, awareness, safety and police involvement to help secure a safe environment for everyone.
We had tremendous help from our church members, local fire department, fire police, Baptist Church of Fredericksburg, Victory Lighthouse Church and the Hamlin U.C.C.
A special thank you to Denise Voshell who again provided the music. Also thank you to a group of Missionary’s from North Carolina that was brought to our community by Rev. John Burr of the Baptist Church and helped with games, setting up chairs, and tearing down and putting all of the tables, chairs, etc. away after the event closed for the evening. I want to thank all of my committee which included Regina Engler, Scott Benfer, Walter Bolles, Jodi Fields and Terry Knapp. Missy Seltzer handled the participants in the dunking booth and her husband, Bob, did a superb job in grilling the delicious hot dogs while Robin Getz was in charge of the children's games. This is unofficial, but I was told that Pastor Herb Hibshman ate the most hot dogs for the second consecutive year.
The committee will meet on Thursday, August 27th at 6:30 PM along with the participating churches to start planning next year’s event.

St. John’s United Church of Christ is: A church of faith, heeding to
God’s call, through worship, evangelism, discipleship and fellowship.
We are building on our church’s history, while looking to our future.
Our church is filled with messengers, who share the gift of God’s love,
with the community and beyond. We strive to be a church that
reaches out to all with compassion, a vision of God’s everlasting
peace, and a witness of spiritual hope to our present and future
generations. For all this and so much more, we pray in God’s name.
