Dear Parents August is the month for the Performing Arts Festival for Catholic Schools. From its somewhat modest origins in 1989 the festival is now recognized as an event of major significance in the Catholic Education calendar. Good luck to all children involved in performances over the next month. Today both our school band and our dance team performed. I would like to thank Mr Maxwell and Miss Schofield for their work in preparing the children and providing them this opportunity to perform in front of a large audience. Thanks also to Mrs Baxter, Mrs Nettleton, Mrs Ring and Mrs O’Brien for their support. The school Dance Team performed beautifully to the song ‘Ave Maria’. Their team work and respect towards other performers was a great reflection of the values we are trying to instill in our children. The School Band worked well as a team, each playing their individual parts very well. The school will be holding a Performance Evening on Wednesday 5 September starting at 7pm where we can see various performances from this year’s festival. Whole School Mass Tomorrow the year 5’s will be leading us in a whole school Mass starting at 9am in the undercover area. God Bless Chris Lamb Principal

CENTRED ON JESUS CHRIST

REFLECTING ON OUR SCHOOL VISION Over the last 3 weeks we have been recalling aspects of our school vision and our school charisms which talk about how we would like to treat each other in our school. Our school vision statement is:

‘In harmony with our God, St John Paul II Catholic Primary School community is centred on Jesus Christ and shaped by the spiritual gifts of unity, compassion and forgiveness.’ On Monday Miss Schofield lead our community prayer reminding us of one of our school charisms, Compassion. Our charisms came about when we changed our school name to St John Paul II. Each charism is a response to the question, ‘What gifts does God seem to be asking us to give to each other in a community centred on Jesus Christ and named after St John Paul II?’ Compassion is one of the answers. Compassion motivates us to go out of our way to help others experiencing physical, spiritual, or emotional hurts and pains. We recognise the dignity of all people since they are created in God’s image and likeness. Like Christ we want to be always welcoming, loving and generous in our response to others. None of us do this perfectly, but it is an ideal that we strive towards.
