Fidget Spinners As reported recently in the media, Fidget Spinners have become the latest craze and while popular with children, they have caused some problems for schools. While they have some positive uses, they can also produce some negative outcomes. For those children who have anxiety or manipulative issues, they can be a good aid but for those who don’t, they become more of a toy and certainly a distraction to both themselves and others. Accordingly, ‘Fidget Spinners’, are now banned from school unless your child has a written recommendation from their OT. The school also provides a variety of fidget tools for children as required. If you have any concerns about this decision, please contact me at school. Lunches Staff on lunch duty have expressed concern for a considerable time now regarding the amount of food that appears to be wasted (thrown in the bin). Parents would be amazed and probably disheartened to know what is thrown out because their child ‘doesn’t like it’, ‘there’s too much’ or ‘I’m not hungry’. We are going to trial, starting next week, not having bins at lunchtime. Children will need to take home the contents of their lunch boxes after lunch (anything not eaten and wrappers). I’m aware that a good number of children do this already. This will also reduce considerably the time taken to empty, spray, re-bag and clean bins; time that can be spent on the grounds and handyman duties around the school. The first two, Christmas and Easter, are well known to all, believers and non-believers alike. But it is possible that Christians are not always as familiar with the third great feast, the festival of Pentecost. The Father’s Christmas gift of His one and only Son, and Christ’s Easter triumph over the power of sin and death would be of no use to us if the Spirit did not give us the gift of saving faith. Therefore, we celebrate Pentecost with great joy and thanksgiving knowing that Jesus Christ left us with an everlasting legacy.

Dear Parents On Sunday 4 June, across many parishes throughout the Archdiocese, students from Year 6, along with children from the parish catechist program, will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. We look forward to this wonderful celebration. Fidget Spinners As reported recently in the media, Fidget Spinners have become the latest craze and while popular with children, they have caused some problems for schools. What is Pentecost? It is the great feast that marks the birth of the Christian Church by the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost means ‘fiftieth day’ and is celebrated fifty days after Easter. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CONFIRMATION All of our Year 6 students spent some time at the Emmanuel Centre in Perth for a Confirmation Retreat where they were joined by other Confirmation candidates in the parish. It was a beautiful day where all those in attendance had an opportunity to reflect on their relationship with God. We continue to encourage our Confirmation candidates, with all our school and parish community, to come along to the morning Mass held each day here at 8am. Bishop Don Sproxton will be coming along to speak to the Confirmation candidates on Tuesday, May 30. Fr Vinh will provide an opportunity for the Confirmation candidates to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Thursday, June 1. It’s been a busy, exciting and special time for our Year 6s who have had Confirmation preparation and camp, and also found the time to join the Year 5 students for their cluster Mass last Sunday. We thank the Year 5 and 6 teachers and students who came to sing, read and bring up gifts. Confirmation will be celebrated at 9.30am, on Pentecost Sunday, June 4 (candidates need to arrive by 9am). Please pray for our Confirmation candidates.

SPECIAL MASSES AND LITURGIES All are welcome to join us tomorrow, Friday, May 26 for a whole school Mass which has been organised by our Year 1 classes – the Mass carries the theme of the Ascension of Jesus into heaven which is celebrated at all Sunday Masses this weekend.

Next Wednesday, our Pre Primary classes are having a Liturgy for the Visitation of Mary to her cousin Elizabeth, when Elizabeth greeted Mary with the words we repeat in the ‘Hail Mary’ prayer. The visit took place with Mary carrying Jesus in her womb and Elizabeth herself six months pregnant with John the Baptist. Pre Primary have become quite familiar with this story from the Bible in the lead up to their Liturgy of the Word. Parents are most welcome to join our Pre Primary for this special prayer celebration.

LIFELINK

Mr Clark, Miss Gelle and the Year 3 children have been preparing a special prayer for our LifeLink Mission Day for next Friday, June 2 at 8.30am. The work of these agencies includes support for the deaf or hearing impaired, training in the English language for those for whom English is a second

language, counselling and mediation, care for children and adults living with disabilities, mental health support and more. Each year, our school, with all Catholic schools across the state, makes an effort to reflect on and contribute to the wonderful work that these agencies do. As a symbolic gesture of our support, each child will complete a heart activity on the day. They will be presented to Archbishop Timothy Costelloe on 7th June. Students can bring in a gold coin donation to wear free dress (Friday 2nd June). All funds raised will go towards LifeLink agencies.

COMMUNICATION MINISTRY It’s all happening at SJPIICPS at the moment! Especially for the Year 6s. Last week, the Year 6s went on a Confirmation Retreat. It was held in a scary building near the city. “It was really creepy” (Callum P). It was a fun experience and we all became closer to the Holy Spirit. DISCO DISCO DISCO! Last Friday was so much fun. We got to do the Limbo and some students proved that they have a rubber spine. “That boy Kevin in Year 4 can bend like a snake!”. The music was loud and our voices are gone from singing the night away. “I started a conga line” (Callum P). We feel a bit for the neighbours, I’m sure they didn’t get much sleep that night. Camp is on this week! The Year 6s are off on an adventure to Woodman Point. Hopefully we don’t get eaten by a bear. “Watch out for the Drop Bears” warns Mrs B. Apparently behind our dorm, there’s a soccer field and we may be able to play against another school. We can’t wait to sleep on the bunk beds, make sure those on the lower bunks take an umbrella. We are also looking forward to abseiling, playing spotlight and other adventures. “Apparently we are getting Hungry Jacks and going to Timezone” (Lennan P). Rain, rain go away Come again another day, Except Wednesday – Friday Because we want to play (at camp) That’s all for now. Here’s a joke to keep you going this week. How do monkey’s make grilled cheese sandwiches?

In the Gorilla 😊 😊 😊

PLAYGROUP Playgroup is on every Friday from 8.30 to 10.30 am. Please ensure you bring a hat and a healthy snack for your child. The cost of playgroup is a gold coin donation. Hope to see you there!

FRIENDSHIP INCURSION -THE SEEDLINGS PROGRAM

Students from Years 1 to 6 experienced an informative incursion on Friendship from Di Wilcox and the Seedlings Program. This program is part of the Make a Difference Foundation which also provides our school breakfast program. Students learnt about 2 types of friendship: A Healthy Friendship – this makes you feel good about yourself, you are treated well and are supported to feel strong and positive about yourself. An Unhealthy Friendship – this makes you have a bad feeling about yourself. Bad friendships can feel like weeds growing and make you feel negative about yourself. Just like weeds growing in the garden, we need to know how to remove these weeds.

The students were given strategies through role playing to deal with an unhealthy friendship in a variety of situations. This could involve positive self-talk if someone says something mean to us and rethinking how we respond to them. The students also learnt how to recognize nonverbal cues and body language which will help them understand whether a friendship is unhealthy or healthy. Please talk to your children about what they learnt about friendship and the strategies they might use.
