Last Monday we celebrated the holiday commemorating the memory of Martin Luther
King, Jr. and all that he accomplished in the struggle for equality for all people. As we honor his memory, may each of us strive to live in peace with one another and overcome those obstacles that sometimes keep us from each other.
This Saturday, January 24th, is the Feast of St. Francis de
Sales. The Oblate Priests and Sisters and the Visitation Sisters of Georgetown Visitation celebrate this feast regionally. Traditionally this event has always been at Our Lady of Good Counsel, but this year we are hosting the celebration on Monday, January 26
th at 7:00pm. I invite you
to come and join us for this liturgy and small reception after the Mass to commemorate the feast day and to celebrate our Salesian heritage. The presider and preacher at the Mass will be our provincial, Father Jim Greenfield. As you read this our week of hosting the homeless guests of our area is coming to a close. I write this before the actual event, but am already overwhelmed at the positive outreach of our parishioners to those in need. All week, casseroles and gift cards have been pouring in for distribution to our guests. This is one of those cases that truly does take a village to accomplish this tremendous task. To all of you, I extend my heartfelt gratitude for such a clear demonstration of living the Gospel by responding to this obvious need of our society today. This initiative began with the dream of Patty Holley and Pam Dister, but it does really encompass the active participation of so many throughout our entire parish community and the other faith communities that join us for this week-long endeavor.

THIS SUNDAY’S READINGS: Jonah 3:1-5, 10; Psalm 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9; 1 Corinthians 7:29-31; Mark 1:14-20
In today’s Gospel we experience Jesus preaching “the kingdom of God is at
hand,” as He invites several fishermen to come after Him. St. Francis de Sales notes: God has many ways of calling men and women to service. God uses preaching more than any other form to convert individuals. Through the ministry of preaching God has touched the hearts of many people, and called them to special vocations. Preaching is like a divine seed cast into the ground of our hearts by the words of preachers. God touches others while they are reading good books, and still others when they hear the holy words of the Gospel while being read. There are others who were disturbed by the misfortunes, troubles and sufferings that befell them in the world. Still, even if God is all-powerful and can do anything, God does not want to take away the gift of freedom given to us. Whenever God calls us to service, He wants us to come willingly and not out of force or compulsion. Nonetheless, even if some people come to God’s service because they are disgusted with the world or because some sorrows and afflictions trouble them, they can still give themselves to God freely and willingly. Our sufficiency is from our Redeemer who taught us how to be fit ministers and capable of doing God’s will. One who abides in Christ partakes of His divine Spirit, who is in the midst of our hearts as a living fountain. Through the love the Holy Spirit pours into our hearts, the frail reeds of our actions are turned to gold. Our hearts, flooded with the love of the Holy Spirit, produce sacred actions that tend towards immortal glory and carry us to it.

FEAST DAY CELEBRATION! As

th, the area Oblates of
St. Francis de Sales Priests and Sisters, along with the Visitation Sisters of Georgetown Visitation will come together at our parish for their annual regional celebration honoring their patron, whose feast day is Saturday, January 24
th. All are invited to gather
with them for Mass at 7:00pm, when Father Jim Greenfield, OSFS, Provincial of the Wilmington-Philadelphia Province will preside and preach. Immediately after Mass, there will be a light reception in the Narthex.

Living Gently: Finding God in the Turmoil
The 12th annual Live Jesus Lenten Morning of Reflection returns to our parish. The event opens at 8:00am with sign-in and continental breakfast, followed by two presentations and Mass, all ending about 12:45pm. This event offers a beautiful time to quiet our hearts and open them to hear the words
which will inspire us to continue growing in the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales.
The time in which we live calls for inspiration to live gently in an increasingly difficult world. How do we do this? Our first presenter, Father Barry Strong, OSFS, will speak about how to bring gentleness into our daily living, thus enabling us to find God in the darkest places of life. St. Francis de Sales counsels that “Nothing is so strong as gentleness – nothing so gentle as real strength.”
Following Father Strong’s presentation, Sister Karen Mohan, VHM, of Visitation Monastery of Minneapolis and parishioners Michele and Tom Costello will share with us their “Perspectives on Gentleness”.
Online registration is now open at www.oblates.org. Due to the large attendance at Live Jesus the last two years, carpooling is recommended.
BIRTHDAY CLUB HEADS-UP The Social Action
Committee will have tags available for the Birthday Club next weekend. When you come to Mass, please take a tag, purchase the wished-for gift and return the wrapped and tagged gift by the weekend of February 14th - 15th. For most of these children the gifts we purchase will be the only gifts they receive on their special day. Thank you for your continued support of those who need our help.
BROWN BAG WEEKEND! The Cornerstones van will be in
our parking lot all weekend January 24th - 25th. There’s a chill in the air; everyone needs a warm meal. If we each bring just a few non-perishable food items we will help stock Cornerstones pantry for the weeks ahead. Thank you for your continued generosity.
HYPOTHERMIA PREVENTION SHELTER
St. John Neumann has been sheltering up to 80 homeless people in our facility this past week as part of the Fairfax County’s hypothermia prevention response program. Our guests will depart for another church this Sunday morning, January 25
th. Our most basic goal has been to keep
homeless people from freezing at night during the cold winter months, and we have been successful.
Our casserole drive was a great success. We used many of the pulled pork and baked bean casseroles during the week, as well a some of the others. We donated some casseroles to the Reston Drop-In Center where some of our guests went during the day. There are still many left to donate to Embry Rucker and other shelters. Thanks to the many people who made such delicious homemade meals.
Your donations of clothing, money, food, and gift cards were also essential to our program. This year we were able to provide boots for those in need. Our guests appreciated the warm clothing you donated, and we were able to use donations for unexpected items that they needed. The food you provided enabled our guests to take a bag lunch when they left each day, or it was used at the shelter. Any leftovers will go to area shelters. And finally, those gift cards - we gave them to guests during the week and we have enough left to give to other shelters. Our guests so appreciate being able to purchase something so they can warm up on these cold days.
Next week, we will present a few details about what the hundreds of volunteers from four faith communities did during their combined 2000-plus volunteer hours. Each year, our guests are overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of Saint John Neumann parishioners and our faith partners. One guest remarked that he didn’t participate in the program all the time—he preferred to camp out when it wasn’t too cold. But he comes to St. John Neumann every year—not just for the comfortable accommodations and delicious food, but because he is treated with respect here. There is no better recommendation than this, and we thank everyone who participated in our hypothermia prevention week effort.
COMING SOON TO A BULLETIN NEAR YOU! Beginning next Sunday, February 1
st, we will introduce a
new monthly column, “Liturgical Reflections”, written by Father Don Heet, OSFS. It is Father Don’s intention to offer, on a monthly basis, brief reflections on what we do at Sunday Mass, and why we do it. No doubt there are many things happening at Mass for which we don’t completely understand the relevance, and Father Don’s column will surely enlighten us and make Mass even more meaningful. We are scheduling to publish these reflections on the first Sunday of each month, so you can look forward to them and be sure you pick up a bulletin on those Sundays.

BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL A mailing will be sent soon regarding the 2015 Bishop’s Lenten Appeal (BLA); “Stewards of Christ Sharing Gospel Joy!”. Please consider pledging support to this important appeal that funds many programs and ministries that serve thousands of people in our diocese. When we join together as one Body in Christ, we can do so much for so many!
PANCAKES NEXT WEEKEND! The Knights of Columbus will host Pancake Breakfast next Sunday, February 1
st in the Auditorium from 8:30 to 11:30am.
Enjoy a filling, warm breakfast on a chilly morning, with no kitchen duty required, and lots of warm fellowship included! Bring your families; bring your friends.
Your free-will offerings this month will benefit the Fellowship Foundation House, which manages both the Hunters Woods and Lake Ann Fellowship Houses, providing affordable care for lower income residents.
IT’S TIME FOR THE 5-CAR RAFFLE!
St. John Neumann is again participating in the All Saints Church 5-Car Raffle! Prizes include five 2015 vehicles and $20,000 in cash prizes. New parishioners and those who participated the past three years will soon be receiving car raffle tickets by mail to sell. With these great prizes, the tickets will sell themselves! After-Mass weekend ticket sales will begin February 14
th!
As in past years, all the earnings go directly to worthy causes. A portion of the money will again be used to help the parishioners of Niño Jesús, our sister parish in Manta, Ecuador. This year we also will contribute to two Reston based organizations: Helping Hungry Kids and the
Reston Drop-In Center.
NEW EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT Mark Paes, who
sometimes can be seen on the altar as a server at the 9:30 and 11:30am Masses and is a member of our High School Teens (AGAPE) ministry, is working toward his Eagle Scout rank. A member of Boy Scout Troop 160 at Franklin Middle School, Mark has elected to satisfy the community service project required for this rank by conducting a Winter Coat Collection Drive. He will deliver all donated coats to Cornerstones, and they will use them to replenish their “Winter Coat Closet”, providing warmth to those less fortunate in our community. This closet is available to all who use Cornerstones’ services. Mark will be collecting donations after all Masses the weekend of February 7
th - 8
th. Many of you may have made
a New Year’s’ resolution to start sorting through your household closets, ridding them of items that no longer fit or that you no longer use or need. Any gently-used coats, gloves and scarves that you find you can do without will be greatly appreciated. As we head into what forecasters tell us will be a continued cold and snowy winter, items you can donate will help the people of our community stay warm.

FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT will be Friday, February
6th
at 6:30pm in the Auditorium, featuring “How to Train Your Dragon 2”, rated PG and running 102 minutes. This sequel continues where the original left off. When Hiccup and Toothless discover an ice cave that is home to hundreds of new wild dragons and the mysterious Dragon Rider, the two friends find themselves at the center of a battle to protect the peace. Everyone from ages 1 - 100 is encouraged to come! Children are invited to bring their sleeping bags, pillows or bean bags and recline on the floor. Children must be accompanied by an adult. CHRISTMAS AT NIÑO JESÚS IN MANTA,
ECUADOR The Niño Jesús Ministry thanks the
scholarship sponsors who contributed to the purchase of gifts cards and food that helped make the holidays a little brighter for the students our parish supports. All scholarship students enjoyed a meal and received the gifts at a party held just before Christmas.
The students also were given the Christmas cards that we had written and sent to them at that time. We understand that everyone was very grateful for their gifts and happy to receive the cards that were sent to them by their sponsors.
BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE Have you ever participated
in one of the quarterly Red Cross blood drives the Knights of Columbus Family of Man Council #7566 sponsors at our parish, with Eddie Byrne taking the reins? If so, you have made them a success. At our last two drives combined, conducted in August and December, we received 55 pints of blood from 60 donors. The Council thanks our Young Adult group for providing volunteer support in August, but especially thanks all of you who are so willing to literally give of yourself to save the lives of others.
If you have not donated in the past, this is something you might consider in the new year. Donating is easy, painless, only takes about an hour, and guess what? You get cookies and juice when you are finished! If you have questions about eligibility, you can visit the American Red Cross at www.redcross.org or if you have general questions or concerns you can call Eddie at 703-860-4130. The next drive held at the parish will take place on Saturday, March 14
th from 8:00am - 12:30pm, which gives you time to
prayerfully consider the impact your donation will have. Information on how to register to donate will follow later.

: Join us for a what promises to be a wonderful experience when we visit the National Museum of the Marine Corps, in Triangle, VA, just across from United States Marine Corps Quantico. We will view the many exhibits, and will have lunch at the Devil Dog Diner or the Tun Tavern. We plan to leave our parking lot at 9:30am.

: We will take a very short trip west to Leesburg for shopping, and will have lunch at the Lightfoot Restaurant. Watch for more information next week.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FAMILY OF
THE MONTH The brothers of the Family of
Man Council #7566 all work hard on a wide variety of projects and efforts and we are thankful for this service. One brother who demonstrates a broad range of skills and interests is Eddie Byrne. Eddie is most well-known within the parish for his coordination of the quarterly Family of Man Council and American Red Cross Blood Drives at our parish. EVANGELLI GAUDIUM - JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Fr. Bob Mancini, OSFS, will reprise the morning series he led in fall 2014 in four 7:00pm sessions on Wednesdays in February. He will explore this papal document using a “study group” method. Participants will read “Joy of the Gospel” and use the Study Guide to reflect on Pope Francis’ important themes. The book is available for purchase ($10) in the Faith Formation Office. DIOCESAN WORK CAMP COMMITMENT
MEETING All High School Teens and adults who
attended the previously scheduled Diocesan Work Camp Information Meetings on November 23
rd and January 4
th
and have decided that they are committed to prepare for and participate in the Diocesan Work Camp on June 20
th –
June 26th in Shenandoah County are required to attend
this meeting. As you learned previously we can take a limited number of teens and adults to these camps and the requirements which must be met to qualify were explained at the Information Meetings. You are required to bring the following items to the Commitment Meeting: 1) Your fully- completed online registration form for Diocesan Work Camp if not previously provided to me (steps to register online previously provided by e-mail); 2) a check for $100 payable to Saint John Neumann Church for your first deposit; 3) a completed 2015 Diocesan Work Camp Youth Commitment form; 4) a Parish Work Camp Registration Form (different from the Diocesan Registration form; 5) your personal calendar to insure all future dates are documented 6) and be prepared to schedule an Interview date and time. As mentioned at the Information Meetings, completed Diocesan Work Camp Registrations are being accepted on a first come, first served basis with priority given to those teens whose parents have volunteered to be a Crew Leader or Contractor/Project Manager at work camp. We also need more parents to sign up as Crew Leaders and Contractor/Project Managers as soon as possible. I will take as many teens as possible based on the number of adults that fill key positions in the ratio required by the Diocese as discussed at our Information Meetings. The Diocese does not consider any teen officially registered until they have received a completed Diocesan Work Camp Registration form, monetary deposit and a fully-registered adult in the necessary ratio to support the teens. If you are interested in participating in the Diocesan Work Camp and have not attended an Information Meeting or contacted Doug Johnson, you will need to do so as soon as possible. We will consider your application based on available space. Special Collections
Next weekend, there will be a special collection for the weekly diocesan newspaper. “The Arlington Catholic Herald” is a source of information concerning events of the world, the nation and our own diocese. Randomly the diocese selects 40% of our registered parishioners to receive this newspaper; we have no input as to how this occurs. If you are not receiving the newspaper but would like to, or if you are receiving the newspaper and don’t want to, please let us know and we will see what we can do. These subscriptions cost the parish $22 each. If you are receiving the paper and enjoy it, perhaps you can help offset this cost by participating in next weekend’s collection to cover this expense. Thank you for your consideration.
