ST. HELEN PARISH PICNIC: This year's Parish Picnic will once again be held at Wiegand's Lake. The date for the picnic has been set for August 2, 2020. MEN’S MASS: On Wednesday, June 24th we had a little more than 30 men in attendance at Fr. Jay's house for our first summer Mass of the year. The weather was perfect, and it was great to see everyone. We are pleased to announce that our next Mass will be on Wednesday, July 29th celebrated by Fr. Bednar and hosted by Rick Cherney at 9943 Woodruff Lane, Newbury. All men of the parish are invited, and we encourage you to bring your sons and grandsons. Mass will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by a cookout and fellowship. As always meat will be provided, and we ask that everyone bring a dish to pass. For those concerned about the pandemic, be advised that social distancing rules will be observed.More good news to announce that Deacon Larry Somrack has offered to host our August Mass; details will be announced in August. We are looking forward to a great turnout at Rick's on July 29th. If you have any questions, please contact Don Paschke at 216-310-1212 or [email protected].
A REFLECTION FROM JIM HOGAN…Real FreedomI know it is the day after the 4th of July - but celebrating liberty need not be limited to a day. In fact, Congress actually voted for independence on July 2nd. That was the day John Adams thought we should celebrate independence: “The second day of July 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America.” (Missed it by two days, Mr. Adams.) Because the Declaration was formally dated, finalized, and adopted by the Continental Congress on the fourth, it became Independence Day. And since the Declaration wasn’t signed by everyone until August 2, 1776, we can keep celebrating for another two months. We need the celebration. We need to remind ourselves that liberty is a precious right. The liberty of unborn children has been denied in a recent Supreme Court decision (June Medical Services v. Russo). The liberty of store owners has been attacked in a pandemic of riots over the past month. The liberty of religious expression has been suppressed by the tearing down of a Saint Junipero Serra monument.Yet, amidst the struggle for political freedom, as Christians, we know there is a deeper freedom that exists beyond merely being free to choose. True freedom is not choosing what you like but choosing what you should like. True freedom is not choosing what you think is good but choosing what is truly good. “The more one does what is good, the freer one becomes” (CCC 1773). Christ came to show us that true independence comes from dependence on God.“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another” (Gal 5:13).Liberty begins in our hearts. While a prisoner in the Nazi death-camp at Auschwitz, psychiatrist Victor Frankl discovered the one freedom that no one can take from us: “We who lived in the concentration camps can remember the men who walked through the huts comforting others, giving away their last piece of bread. They may have been few in number, but they offer sufficient proof that everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - “to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.”We cannot always alter our environment or control our feelings, but we do not have to be a slave to them. Feelings come from the outside-in, like when we get punched in the mouth or kissed on the mouth. But our attitude is generated inside-out. It is an inner decision we make about what we are going to do with our feelings and environment. Frankl noted, “Between stimulus and response, there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”In that “space,” we can choose an attitude of happiness within hardship, virtue against vice, faith over fear, and love amidst hate. Or we can choose not to. The decision is all on us. Gandalf the Wizard said it best: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
“Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God” (1 Peter 2:16).

LIFE TEEN SUMMER RETREAT: ENCOUNTER –With Social Distancing, July 18-21 at St. Helen ChurchIt’s time for a revival! We are offering our teens an opportunity to retreat and spend some much needed face time with Jesus! Jesus is calling our young people back to community and back to the Sacraments! Retreats are such an important component of their religious education experience at St. Helen Church. Through retreat experiences, they come to realize and feel how much they are loved by God and His Church and they become better equipped with all that is needed to make a permanent commitment to walk in Christ’s footsteps and continue a lifelong process of conversion. We have a God who meets us where we are at, and we believe this will absolutely be the case as we continue to adapt in response to the unprecedented circumstances in our world and in our Church. This four-day event may look a little different than the retreats and Harvest Workers service week the teens have come to know and love. But, we believe, it will be a powerful event for high school students (incoming freshmen through recent graduates) and is desperately needed in order for them to get back on track and recommit to being disciples for Jesus. The theme of our retreat is “ENCOUNTER – with Social Distancing.” Jesus is REAL! His presence in the Eucharist is REAL! He pursues and walks with us at every moment. We just need to recognize the many ways He provides for us to encounter Him and then embrace Him with total abandonment. Please consider sending your teen(s) to this powerful, life-giving, and life-changing retreat. This time away from “real life” will give the teens an opportunity to reflect on their lives, the path they have chosen, and their relationship with Christ. Their time on retreat will not be forgotten. They will leave this retreat spiritually refreshed, and they will move forward with stronger friendships rooted in Christ.Elements of the retreat include daily Mass, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament (including Sunset Mass and Adoration on the beach!), skits, teen witnesses, talks on the faith, small and large group discussions, Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Sacrament of Reconciliation, time with the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, community builders, games, meals, prayer experiences, service, food drive, music, virtual talent show for our brothers and sisters in local nursing homes, a campout and bonfire, and so much more! The retreatants will be chaperoned and mentored by adults who have been Virtus trained and fingerprinted, have experience working with high school teenagers, and are strong in their Catholic faith. In all of Saint Pope John Paul II’s travels, he reached out to the young people and invited them to step forward in leadership and to be passionate witnesses of Christ. Please pray for all of those attending and helping with this special event that they may consider themselves chosen to walk with our Lord, to grow strong in their faith, and to live boldly for Christ. The Registration Package may be found on www.sthelen.com. Please note that the registration package includes permission form, photo/medical release form, and a letter from Fr. Jay with multiple items requiring parent signatures due to the Covid-19 situation. Please call Life Teen Youth Minister, Theresa Zickert (440) 781-7269 or Life Teen Administrative Assistant, Tammy Sadowski (330) 842-1745 [email protected] with any questions you may have. Registration deadline is July 3, 2020.
LEGION OF MARY: Our Legion of Mary is very saddened that we cannot do our works at this time because of the pandemic. We miss our homebound visits with the people that we have gotten so close to and are like our family, the nursing home contacts who look so forward to the rosary, receiving Jesus and joining in on our monthly Masses, and the hospital with those suffering physical pain. We pray that through the invocation of our Most Blessed Mother that this time will soon pass and we can get back to our calling of serving Jesus through Mary. Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, Pray for Us. Roberta Elliott
MAGNIFICAT SUBSCRIPTION:Dear Friends, At this time, unfortunately, we have not reached one hundred applications for the group discounted subscription for the Magnificat. This has been a savings for us for many years; for this we are extremely grateful. Our current subscription goes through November 2020.We will not be obtaining a subscription for 2021. You have 5 months to find another source for your daily prayer and reflection. The annual subscription of The Magnificat is $47.00 and would be mailed directly to you. There are many other resources: Give Us This Day and Living With Christ are two examples. Many sources are available online as well. Discern what is best for you.It has been a grace-filled experience to be able to obtain the Magnificat at a reduced rate for you over the years. I enjoyed our interaction and pray for you and your intentions daily. Be assured of my continued prayers and interest in you.Be safe over the summer and enjoy whatever it is that God has in store for you at this time.In grateful prayer, Sister Bernadette Marie Bacho, SND

SAINT HELEN PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE:Our new directory printing was delayed by 4 months! Lifetouch, who is producing the directory, closed due to the Covid epidemic and is scheduled to open in August. The normal process for producing our book takes 3 months which means that we should get them sometime in October. IMPORTANT: Our directory is a private publication which is given to parishioners only. There is a printed roster in the back of the book with name, address and phone the same as in past years. If you do not want to have your information in the roster, please contact Brianna at the office by July 22nd and let her know.
“IT’S A MATTER OF LIFE...” In the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the bloodiest battles in the history of warfare, 32.5% of all soldiers died. Over three days, 51,112 men lost their lives. Today in America, when a marker is present indicating the possibility of Down Syndrome, 92% of these preborn babies are killed in a manner more brutal than the deaths at Gettysburg. In our supposedly "civilized culture" it is more dangerous for those with the possibility of being born with an extra chromosome than to have fought at Gettysburg. These children, chosen by God to ignite the kindness that lies dormant in people's souls and to plant the seeds of empathy in our hearts, never get a chance to make us better people for having known them.
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS: Congratulations to Paul Kinkoph, from St. Helen, one of 25 winners in the Cash Bonanza Charity Ticket Raffle from the Knights of Columbus. 144,000 tickets were sold in Ohio for statewide and local charities. The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Men's Organization, 18 years and older, building faith in our volunteer works in our parish, school and community. For more information, please contact Mike Kalal at 440-552-4276 or [email protected].

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION:When we cannot receive Holy Eucharist in person - “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”
MAIL IN OFFERTORY DONATION:If you prefer to mail in your offertory rather than give online, you are welcome to address the envelope to St. Helen Church at 12060 Kinsman Road, Newbury, OH 44065.

ONLINE GIVING OPTION: The safest way for you to continue to offer your financial support is through online giving. Online Giving can be accessed either on our St. Helen’s app, through the St. Helen’s webpage, or by going directly to this link: https://www.osvonlinegiving.com/2967. These are all secure and easy to use digital ways to donate. This convenient system does not require you to contact your bank to sign up or to make changes. You can use any of your checking, savings or credit card accounts and the funds will be automatically transferred to our parish bank account. This system is more convenient for the parish than electronic checks from your bank. Additionally, it is convenient for you because you can make changes at any time. Online Giving also helps you maintain your giving throughout the year. This will help the parish with cash flow during this unsettled time. If you are able to continue your financial support, we encourage you to use the Online Giving Option. We are truly blessed by your abundant generosity.
WELCOME TO ST. HELEN! If you are new to St. Helen Parish,
please stop by the Parish Office during regular business hours to register,
or register anytime at sthelen.com. We look forward to meeting you!
