“the days in which we live now require heroic Catholicism, not casual Catholicism.” ~Bishop Daniel Jenky

Dear Brother Knights and families, I realize I am writing about two

August saints for the month of September but it isn’t very often the church celebrates a mother and son feast day back to back. You will read what faith and persistent prayers did for St. Monica and see the effect it had on the life of her son St. Augustine. Just a reminder: DON’T Give UP! Next month I will write about our new Canadian Saint to be canonized by Pope Benedict. NEVER GIVE UP!

St. Monica (feast day August 27th) was married by arrangement to a pagan official in North Africa,

who was much older than she, and although generous, was also violent tempered. His mother lived

with them and was equally difficult, which proved a constant challenge to St. Monica. She had three

children; Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Through her patience and prayers, she was able to convert her husband

and his mother to the Catholic faith in 370· He died a year later. Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious Life. St.

Augustine was much more difficult, as she had to pray for him for 17 years, begging the prayers of priests who, for a

while, tried to avoid her because of her persistence at this seemingly hopeless endeavor. One priest did console her by

saying, "it is not possible that the son of so many tears should perish." This thought, coupled with a vision that she had

received strengthened her. St. Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387. St. Monica died later that same year, on

the way back to Africa from Rome in the Italian town of Ostia.

A MOTHER’S PRAYER: St. Augustine of Hippo (feast day, August 28th) is the patron of brewers because of his

conversion from a former life of loose living, which included parties, entertainment, and worldly ambitions. His

complete turnaround and conversion has been an inspiration to many who struggle with a particular vice or habit they

long to break. This famous son of St. Monica was born in Africa and spent many years of his life in wicked living and in

false beliefs. Though he was one of the most intelligent men who ever lived and though he had been brought up a

Christian, his sins of impurity and his pride darkened his mind so much, that he could not see or understand the Divine

Truth anymore. Through the prayers of his holy mother and the marvelous preaching of St. Ambrose, Augustine finally

became convinced that Christianity was the one true religion. Yet he did not become a Christian then, because he

thought he could never live a pure life. One day, however, he heard about two men who had suddenly been converted

on reading the life of St. Antony, and he felt terribly ashamed of himself. "What are we doing?" he cried to his friend

Alipius. "Unlearned people are taking Heaven by force, while we, with all our knowledge, are so cowardly that we keep

rolling around in the mud of our sins!"

Full of bitter sorrow, Augustine flung himself out into the garden and cried out to God, "How long more, O Lord? Why

does not this hour put an end to my sins?" Just then he heard a child singing, "Take up and read!" Thinking that God

intended him to hear those words, he picked up the book of the Letters of St. Paul, and read the first passage his gaze

fell on. It was just what Augustine needed, for in it, St. Paul says to put away all impurity and to live in imitation of Jesus.

That did it! From then on, Augustine began a new life.

He was baptized, became a priest, a bishop, a famous Catholic writer, Founder of religious priests, and one of the

greatest saints that ever lived. He became very devout and charitable, too. On the wall of his room he had the following

sentence written in large letters: "Here we do not speak evil of anyone." St. Augustine overcame strong heresies,

practiced great poverty and supported the poor, preached very often and prayed with great fervor right up until his

death. "Too late have I loved You!" he once cried to God, but with his holy life he certainly made up for the sins he

committed before his conversion. His feast day is August 28th. Fr. Rick (Chaplain)

I hope everyone has had a safe and healthy summer and I wish those of you who are re-turning to school or have family members returning to school the best in your scholastic en-deavours. Please keep in your prayers the sick or in need of our council , Roger Vercrusye, Bill Strong, Rene Everaert, Paul Bering, Paul Gignac, Ray Lesperance, Joe Porto, Stan Balakowski, John Popelas, J. P. Thibert, Fr. Chris Quinlan, Rob Simone, and Randy Tull. Please also pray for Phil Charrette, a former Grand Knight of our council who passed away in August, Len & Cecile Janisse (Parents of Father Rick), Meagan Balakowski (Granddaughter of Stan Balakow-ski), Monica Hollingsworth (Wife of Bob Hollingsworth), Mark Pigeon (Brother

of Rob Pigeon), Elrose Deehan’s nephew Doug LaPlant, who is suffering from multiple forms of can-cer, and Joe Beausoleil who also passed away in August. If you are aware of someone that is in need of our prayers, or if you would like to be taken of of the prayer list, or if you have any updates or cor-

rections please e-mail me at [email protected]. Fraternally, John Humenny

40 Days for Life is an intensive

effort designed to raise awareness,

save lives, bring healing, and lead

our nation to repentance for the sin of abortion through three

components:

40 days of prayer and fasting

40 days of peaceful vigil

40 days of community outreach

1. Pray and fast

Christ told us that some demons can only be driven out by prayer and fasting. The two go hand in hand. Prayer

keeps us rooted in the fact that it is our desire to carry out God's will. Fasting is a sacrifice that helps us reach beyond our own limitations with God's help. Fasting is not a Christian diet; it is a form of physical prayer. You

can fast from food, TV, alcohol ... anything that separates you from God. Each day between now and the end of the campaign, please commit to pray and fast for the nationwide effort,

and for the efforts here in our city.

2. Sign up for prayer requests and updates

To learn more about 40 Days for Life and get prayer requests and breaking news about this effort, sign up today using the form on the top right of www.40daysforlife.com/leamington website.

3. Spread the word

The success of 40 Days for Life depends on the most powerful form of advertising in the world -- word of mouth. Tell all of your friends, family members, co-workers, and fellow believers about 40 Days for Life. Encourage

them to visit the web site where they can learn more and get involved.

4. Find your role

Please contact us to explore opportunities to assist in the following areas:

•Prayer and fasting •Peaceful vigil •Community outreach

Prayerfully discern how God is calling you to help.

5. Participate in the peaceful vigil

While all aspects of 40 Days for Life are crucial in our effort to end abortion, the most visible component is the

peaceful prayer vigil outside our local abortion facility:

Leamington District Memorial Hospital

Our council decided to fully support this effort both through a financial contribution as well as participation in the vigil. It is one of our four pro life activities that we are required to organize as a council on an annual basis. We

have committed ourselves to two 3hrs blocks of time each week: Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM.

We will need three (or more) brothers each day for at least one hour (1 PM, 2 PM, 3 PM). We will be activating a phone tree for the signup so please volunteer for some of these time slots. If you happen to join the vigil at any

other time please contact me with the hours so I can include them in my report to the council : 519 733-4012 or [email protected]. Please bring your family and friends with you.

- - Everybody is invited for the kick-off rally to start the campaign. It will be time for fellowship, great speakers and

music. Among the speakers we will have two firebrand young ladies from Toronto to energize our youth, our

brother knight Deacon Alex from St. Michael's sharing his personal experience of living with a disability in our

society, a young lady sharing her experience of abortion as well as our own Alexandra from Letters4Life.ca.

Sept 23rd, 2-4 PM, Portuguese Club, 217 Talbot St., Leamington. FREE admission. After the rally you can join

in Coats for Kids Leamington dinner from 4 to 7 PM (check other reports for location)

- On Sunday Sept 30

th 2:30 - 3:30 at intersection of Main & Division in Kingsville.

Peaceful reminder and witness about abortion to our own community. LIFE

CHAIN is church oriented and pastor focused and the key to a successful Chain is

for local pastors to educate their congregations about abortion and then lead them

to the sidewalk where their Chain is to be held. Without firm pastoral support, a

Life Chain will not fulfill its potential for saving lives and changing hearts.

We are at over 64,500 letters- more than 1/2 of our goal.

You can use WeNeedALaw.ca SimpleMail program to send a pre-written pro-life

email to your MP... it only takes a few seconds (literally!). Until Sept 5th you can

order a package of full-colour Motion 312 postcards from MP Postcards. http://mppostcards.webs.com/

We have only 3 weeks left before scheduled vote for Motion 312, so please act fast! Here is a link to our Letter

Pass 312 http://pass312.webs.com/ New campaign supporting M312 is going to be revealed on Sept 7

th. Please visit the website for more info.

By the time you read this report

there will be only one event left for the Fry Hut –

unless we decide to work the Murder Mystery Night

in October. The final scheduled event is the Fall

Flea Market September 22 and 23. If the spring

Flea Market is any indication this final event will be

a good one (weather permitting). Last year this

event was cancelled due to excessive rain and wet

grounds. Again, if you want to volunteer please con-

tact John at 733-3190.

The Military Muster was a success with six bags of

potatoes used and nearly two boxes of onion rings

along with several cases of water. The Knights share

was just over $1100 while the Heritage Village share

was $275.12, not as good as last year, but definitely

an event worth continuing. The Knights share to date is $5548.28 (a

gross number) which is already higher than last year with two more

events to be added. The Fall Car show which took place on Sept. 2

should add significantly to the total as will the Flea Market.

Neil and I trust that our brothers will support us at this final event. For

more information or to volunteer contact me at 519-733-3190 or e-

mail [email protected]

Raising Awareness About Life Insurance Since 2003, each September has been designated as Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance Awareness Month was created because there is an overwhelming lack of understanding of the product among the general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market

Research Association puts out the results from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers they report continue to be discouraging. A recent survey found that 76 percent of people polled did not have a personal financial advisor. Sixty-eight percent of that same survey group said their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very unfavorable. In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they did not know to whom to turn. If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus, you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is the care and service of your family’s life insurance, retirement, disability income and long-term care needs. I’ll answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help. Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they worry about “making the wrong decision.” Talk with me, and, afterwards, you’ll understand that the only wrong decision was not protecting your family’s future sooner.

Squires Report: Thanks to SK Ted Rocheleau for all the work he and his family has done with Circle 5147 and all the boys and their families. Thank you to the entire Rocheleau family! This has been a busy summer for the Squires. here's is a little of what's been happening. On Aug 10 - 11, the Squires hosted a "Supersoaker - Sleepover Fun night" at Chief Squire, Bradley Dekold's house. Thanks to Martin, Sr. and Loretta Dekold for the use of their

house, pool, and property, the boys had a GREAT time. Seven squires attended, with others, as well as four of our Brother Knights. This report was submitted by our Bursar Squire, Matt Boutros: "The purpose of this event was to say goodbye to our past chief and provincial Chief Squire, Martin Dekold Jr., who has shown dedication to our circle since it was first formed. We also have not had a fun night for a very long time an needed something to keep us going until camp [26, 27, 28 Oct/12]. We had lots of activity that lasted us from 2pm on Friday until 1pm on Saturday [the next day]. We played soccer and basketball at the Jack Miner's school playground. Swam in the Dekold's pool, played Risk [board game], watched several movies and played video games in the Dekold's basement. The following morning we had a radically outrageous breakfast and shared in fellowship at the nearby R.O.B.S. diner". To include, my thanks to the Dekolds for allowing us the privilege of sending Martin off to school (University of Ottawa). What an honor watching Martin grow through the inception of our circle, utilizing the skills he learned along the way and now becoming a mentor to other squires and peers throughout his life. He truly is an example of what the Squires program is all about. August 25th, the Squires hosted a Road Hockey event on Kingswood Drive. Approximately half dozen squires came out. The weather was superb!! As the Road Hockey dwindled, the boys were quick to change to hide and go seek throughout the neighbourhood, Frisbee, soccer and general fellowship. This was a simple event, from 1-4pm and everyone had fun. On both Tuesday's, Aug 21st and 28th, the boys hosted a "soccer night" at the Kingsville Miner Soccer Pitches. This event was an "OPEN" event, meaning that anyone could come out as the boys generally have fun, but also use this as a recruiting tool. What a great way to have fun, blow off some energy, and gain to new friends. Just a little less than a dozen squires came out with a possible two prospects. Two - three Knights showed up and participated. Up-coming events: Thursday Sept 06 the Fr. Henri Masse Circle #3453 will be hosting an investiture on September 6th at Visitation Parish. We will be investing at least three new squires into the program. All are welcome, and show up for 6:30 to help set-up. Starts at 7:00. Brief Meeting afterwards. Finished by 9:00. Our next meeting(s) for THIS MONTH will be THURSDAY 13 September at 7pm and MONDAY 24 September at 7pm. The reason why there will be two events is that the boys have LOTS GOING ON! AWESOME!!!! Please, if you want to see our youth grow, come out and witness one their meetings. Generally, the Squires meet every second Monday of each month, at 7pm. All parents are welcome to come out and see, bring their boys aged 10 - 18yrs. Please visit the Provincial Squires website, <http://www.ontariosquires.com/#!> for more information. We would also like to thank all the knights in council 8233 for sponsoring us, assisting us in growth, spiritually and otherwise. Also, thank you to the Grand Knight, Steve Benson for inviting the Squires Executive to be installed along with the council's executive. What an honor! Constable John Atkinson, Squires Circle #5147 will be holding a recruiting day in the near future. Please follow up in the parish bulletin and this bulletin for more information. Any Knight or catholic family with a boy aged 10 - 18yrs wishing to learn more about the Squires, or join our circle, please call 519-712-8900 or email [email protected]
