JUNE 24, 2018 THE NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST

The Birth of John the Baptist In six months, it will be Christmas Eve. Based on

the Gospel account that “Mary remained with

Elizabeth about six months” when she was

awaiting the birth of her son John, the Church

observes with a Solemnity the birthday of the

Baptist on June 24, which falls on Sunday this

year.

Of all the words of St. John that are recorded in

the Gospels, I am most inspired by his final

known declaration. Speaking of his relationship

to his cousin Jesus, John said: “He must

increase, and I must decrease.” These words –

like Mary’s expression, “I am the servant of the

Lord; let it be done as you say” – reflect the

profound and confident humility each of us can

have through focusing our lives on Jesus. In

prayer, reflection, and sacrament, we come to

know this paradox: the more we surrender our

lives to the guidance and grace of the Lord, the

more ourselves we become. As Jesus increases,

and we decrease, our freedom grows and our joy

multiplies. It is easier said than done, of course;

but it is the heart of our faith.

As we celebrate John’s birthday, we remember

the historical reality of the birth of Jesus as well

… that God has entered time in His Son, and

remains with us always. Happy Birthday, St. John

the Baptist; and thank you for pointing out to us,

over and over, the Lamb of God.

Religious Freedom Week – Prayers for Religious Liberty

All are encouraged to pray for freedom to live and

practice our faith in the public square, especially during

Religious Freedom Week. The successor to the “Fortnight

for Freedom,” this observance began on June 22, the

feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, martyred for

defending the Church’s freedom, and ends June 29, the

feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, also martyrs for the Kingdom

of God. The theme this year: “Serving Others in God's

Love: Religious Freedom Week 2018.”

People of faith are committed to serving others in God's

love in healthcare, child welfare, assisting the poor,

education, and more. Religious freedom protects the

space in which we can continue to serve. Learn more at

www.usccb.org/ReligiousFreedomWeek.

Join Bishop Kettler for a Holy Hour for Religious Freedom

on Monday, June 25, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s

Cathedral.

Farewell to Fr. Placid; Welcome to Fr. Derek!

Join us for an Open House to thank Fr. Placid for his

priestly service in our midst on Sunday, June 24, from

3:00-5:00 p.m. at St. John Cantius (Fr. Placid will preside

at the Holy Hour there beginning at 2:00 p.m.). Please

see his comments below. And, we will welcome Fr. Derek

Wiechmann as our new parochial vicar beginning June

28. Blessings to these priests who dedicate their lives to

the service of the Gospel of Christ.

Fr. Tom

“IN EVERYTHING GOD MAY BE GLORFIED” Each and every person has a specific purpose and plan in the sight of God. I believe in faith that what should happen does happen timely.

As I am leaving to India, I want to thank everyone, especially Bishop Kettler, Fr. Rolfes and the personnel board, Fr. Tom, all the parish cluster staff and each and everyone in the Diocese of St. Cloud in the cluster parishes; especially those who have given me rides and all who made my life happy.

I have enjoyed my time being with you all and having had the opportunity to serve God and you. I am sorry that I couldn’t be with you for longer as a better instrument to serve God and you. Still, I have tried my level best.

Though I will miss you, still I will love you all. You are all in my heart. I assure my prayers for you. I, too, need your prayers and God’s blessings.

I will always cherish the memories in St. Cloud within this short period. If God wants, I may join you sooner than later.

Once again, I would like to thank one and all. God bless you, and may the saints intercede for you. Intercessions of Our Lady always be for you.

With thanks, Yours in Christ Fr. Placid Santhosh, OSB
