Parish Mission Statement Celebrating, Proclaiming, & Living the Joy of the Gospel

Comments from Deacon Dale Brown These familiar lines from the Sermon on the Mount are essential parts of Christ's own description of our life-mission as Christians. We need to reflect on the meaning of the images Jesus uses, so that we can live this mission more authentically. Here is some background on these images. According to Jewish custom, slapping someone on the face with the back of one's hand was twice as insulting as slapping him with the palm of one's hand. A right-handed person slapping someone else on the right cheek (the case Jesus implicitly refers to) implies just such a backhanded blow. By law, a Jew could be forced to hand over a tunic as a payment of legal recompense (even poor men of the time would have owned two tunics), but not his cloak. Most often a person had only one cloak, and it was used not only as a coat during the day, but also as a blanket at night. Palestine during the time of Jesus was under direct Roman control. The occupying forces were permitted by law to enlist natives as guides or pack-bearers for a mile of any journey they may be taking. So, what is Jesus really asking of us when He tells us to turn the other cheek, to hand over our cloak as well as our tunic, and to voluntarily go an extra mile? He is teaching us how to respond to personal insults and humiliations. It was humiliating and offensive to be slapped on the right cheek, to be forced to hand over a tunic to pay a debt, to be consigned to carrying a foreigner's pack in your own homeland. Jesus wants us to respond to personal insults with grace, patience, and forgiveness. He wants us to break the cycle of violence by not always insisting on getting our own way, but going out of our way to do good to others, even when they don't strictly deserve it. That's what God did with us by sending Jesus to be our Savior, and that's what He wants us to do for those around us.

TRIBUTE TO BETTY HANAFEE A TALE OF TWO ST. MARY’S FAMILIES

God called Betty Home on January 26, 2020.

The Hanafee family and the Poole family were closely related as fellow parishioners.

Mr. William Hanafee and my father, Jim Poole, often discussed the challenges of raising large families.

My Aunt, Teresa Poole, Dad’s sister, worked her entire career for Mr. Hanafee in the Jackson Sawmill.

Betty also worked there. My Aunts Teresa and Anna Margaret Poole were daily participants in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass at the “old” St. Mary’s on Baltimore

Street. While they were at Mass, Betty said her father told her she had to staff the office in the Jackson Sawmill.

My sister, Camille Poole, and brother, Ed Poole; Betty and Anne Tracy Hanafee, socialized on Sunday nights in Teresa

and Anna Margaret’s home. Other parishioners included Walter Phelan, Harold Johnson and Vince Tapler.

Rosemary Poole and Betty were classmates at St. Mary’s. In that era, there was no school cafeteria, so the students brought their

lunches. Rosemary brought sausage biscuits; Betty brought cream cheese and pineapple sandwiches. They swapped sandwiches. Perhaps

that was when Betty learned to like sausage biscuits which she had with the daily Mass participants at the social

breakfast hour at McDonald’s.

Pat Poole and Betty were officers in the ALTAR SOCIETY. Dues were collected from the members. When the Society disbanded in the format, money was left in the treasury. The members voted to buy the

two gold, tall candle sticks which are located on both sides of the Altar.

Paul Poole considered Donald Hanafee as his hero because he fought in WWII in Okinawa.

Merle Poole, R.N., worked her entire professional career at JMC Gen-eral Hospital, first as head of Pediatrics Nursing, (which she had to

give up because of her crippling Rheumatic Arthritis and her inability to no longer walk the floors to the little patients’ rooms); she studied

and became a Certified Diabetic Counselor. After Merle’s retirement, Betty, who was a diabetic, would come to Merle’s home where she received counseling on the diabetic diet.

When I moved back to Jackson, I because a close friend of Betty. We participated in daily Mass and enjoyed breakfast at McDonald’s.

Betty was a special member of the Hanafee family. She would tell of such things as taking her nieces and nephews to St. Louis for Cardinal

baseball games. She talked about cooking Thanksgiving dinner for many of them.

She was a true friend and worker in God’s Kingdom. For years she was a daily Communicant at Mass; a member of the Altar Society; laundered the altar linens; and made sure the candle stands were

stocked with votive candles.

Betty did all of these things untiringly and quietly. She would not accept any nominations for any awards.

She did all that she did for the honor and glory of God.

We will miss her.
