We celebrate the second Sunday of advent this weekend, and liturgically we have a busy week ahead of us. This Tuesday, December 8 we will celebrate The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We will have additional masses in addition to our 8am mass. There will be a vigil mass on Monday, December 7 at 7 PM, and also a 7 PM mass

on Tuesday, December 8. On Saturday, December 12, our parish community will gather to celebrate our Lady of Guadalupe at our regular 5 PM mass. There will be a reception to follow. I encourage you to reflect on Our Lady as our companion on our journey through this advent season. On Friday, December 11th at 6 PM you are invited to join me in decorating our parish for Christmas. We will listen to Christmas Carols that day and enjoy some snacks as we work to make our church grounds ready for Christmas. Happy Advent! Fr. Karol WHAT IS THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION? None of the four gospels mentions Mary’s origins, and the words immaculate conception do not appear in scripture, yet the teaching that Mary was conceived without sin is essential to Catholic understanding. The early stories about Mary come from sources like The Birth of Mary, the Protevangelion of James, and The First Gospel of the Infancy of Jesus. While these documents didn’t make the cut when the canon of scripture was set, they remain valuable windows into the way early Christians expressed their beliefs. One thing they make clear: The early church had a powerful sense that the Incarnation-event bound Jesus and his mother in a singular, physical infusion of divine grace. That helps us ap-preciate why the Immaculate Conception represents a very early church understanding. Certain scripture passages point to the cosmic preparation of Mary for her role: Genesis 3:15 (sin will be conquered by a woman); Luke1:28 (Mary is favored); Luke 1:42 (Mary is blessed among women). There was a time when your life and your mother’s were literally inseparable. For the sake of that time when Mary and Jesus shared life together in her body, why wouldn’t God prepare the way? TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By now, trees are beginning to appear in living rooms throughout the parish. To a complete outsider to our culture, it must seem an odd thing indeed. The “roots” of this custom are in liturgical drama: religious plays performed in the churches and town squares of medieval Europe. The favorite theme for this time of year was the “Paradise Play,” a dramatic history of the human race from the Garden of Eden to the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The language and music varied from place to place, but one feature was always in place: a great tree decorated with apples. As a prop, it provided lots of material for the actors: the temptation, shelter for the manger, and a reminder of the wood of the cross. Soon people began to bring “paradise trees” into their homes, decorating them with gifts and lighted candles. Many Germans give credit to Martin Luther for transforming the “Paradise Tree” into the evergreen Christmas tree. Walking home on a starry Advent night, he was so awed by the beauty of the night that he hauled a pine tree inside and decorated it with lighted candles. Americans were holdouts. It took until 1856 for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to decriminalize Christmas decorations, the old Puritan dislikes falling before the waves of Irish and German immigrants with traditions firmly in hand! —Rev.
