Dear Sisters and Brothers,

The bible is the story of how God chose a special people to play a special role in salvation history. Why were we chosen? We were chosen for a life of service rather than a life of privilege.

In our first reading from 2 Samuel 7: 1-5, 8-11, 16, King David had a dream of building a temple for the capital city of Jerusalem. But God did not choose him for that task. It was enough that God had called him from the life of a shepherd to become the commander of the children of Israel. God had promised him that his house and his throne would endure forever.

In our Gospel from Luke 1: 26-38, we see that Mary was chosen to bear the only Son of God. She was a simple peasant girl without obvious gifts. But she was chosen for her open heart, her purity of character, and for her strength of faith. She was promised the strength that she would need to fulfill her high calling.

We are not cut out of the same piece of cloth. We have different life experiences and personal talents. God has chosen us to make our own contributions to his kingdom. God does not hide his face from us until we seek him. In fact, we turn to God because he has already chosen us. But God does not control us like a puppet on a string. He has given us the freedom to accept or reject his calling. Let us say yes, like Mary, to God’s calling in our life.

Blessings, Fr. Ray

December 18, Fourth Sunday of Advent In the first reading, God promises King David that his house and his kingdom will endure forever. It is through Mary's "Yes" - "I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say." - that the promise finds fulfillment. There is so much we can learn from Mary’s response. She recognized her life was not truly her own. She surrendered to God’s will. What a powerful witness to the amazing things God can accomplish through us as stewards, when we give ourselves to Him in service, when we surrender our lives to Him. Every Sunday, at the 9:00 AM Mass, we can see stewardship in action in one of the front pews. There, a young mother cradles her baby girl while her four other young children sit or kneel attentively, watching the altar and the choir. The tenderness and love of this mother reminds one of the tenderness and love Mary must have felt toward her baby, Je-sus. What does this have to do with stewardship? The best way to learn about stewardship is to witness it in action. The young mother shares her love and her faith with the rest of us, the Body of Christ, just by being who she is. Who we are is what we offer each other and our God.

PEOPLE OF LIFE

Mother of God, you risked saying yes to being pregnant with the seed of the Holy One. May I also overcome my fears and take the risks that spiritual growth requires of me.

Mother of God, you offered the hospitality of your womb as a dwelling place for the Holy One. May I continually open the womb of my heart to all who need a welcome here.

Mother of God, you awaited the long nine months of the child’s gestation. May I wait patiently when spiritual growth seems to come far too slowly.

Mother of God,, you did not know how the birth of your child would affect your life. May I trust in God’s pres-ence to protect and guide me when I face uncertainty. Out of the Ordinary by Joyce Rupp

WOMEN OF ST. JOAN: Share your story at the Women’s Retreat

Saturday, February 4, 2012 “GIRLFRIENDS in GOD”

Your faith story can inspire others!

The theme of our Women’s Retreat on February 4 will be “Girlfriends in God”. In keeping with this theme, we will be celebrating the ways in which females in our lives have helped us on our spiritual journeys. These are the girls and women who have been Christ to us at special and/or difficult times in the many phases of our lives, from childhood to twilight years . . . our mothers, sisters, aunts, grandmas, cousins, best friends, old friends, distant friends, new friends, daughters, nieces, co-workers, etc.

And we invite YOU to share your story. We will be compiling an anthology of stories from the Women of St. Joan about the special girlfriends in God that we’ve had. Just send your story (up to 300 words) in an email to Rosemarie at [email protected] or drop it off at the office for her. (Be sure to give us your contact information and let us know if you want us to publish your name or to share your story anonymously. And please note that we may need to edit your story. If we do, we will give you a copy of our final version to approve before publishing.)

Register now for the Retreat or Give a special woman in your life a Gift Certificate for the Retreat. Forms available in the Vestibules.
