St . James Episcopal Church
St. James’ Mission Statement
St. James is called to serve God, Christ, and the community of Greater New London.
Adopted by the Vestry May 2001
From the Interim Rector’s Desk Dear Friends in Christ,
The last of the beautiful autumn foliage lingers on in memory, if not in fact. It is time to dust
off the rakes and leaf blowers. Days are noticeably shorter. Daylight Savings Time ends on
Sunday, November 6. Please remember to set your time pieces back one hour before
going to bed on November 5.
Tuesday, November 1, All Saints Day, invites us to remember all of the Saints – not only
those of ages long past, but those, of blessed memory, whom we have known through the
years, those who have left their mark on our lives: including parents, neighbors, friends,
teachers, preachers, even some strangers … All who have shared with each of us, life, love,
wisdom, experience, challenges, encouragement, and most important, faith in our living,
loving, God, Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer.
Please share the names of those whom you recognize as Holy Ones (Saints of God), in your
life by allowing them to be remembered during the Eucharist on All Saints Day (Tuesday,
November 1, at 12 Noon in Saint James Church, and at 5:30 PM in Hallam Chapel at Saint
James), and on All Saints Sunday (November 6 at 8 AM, 10 AM, and
5 PM in Saint James Church). Please share those names with Ellen in
Saint James Parish Office by telephone at 860-443.4989 or by e-mail at:
On Wednesday, November 2, at 7 PM, adults, who would like to enrich
their knowledge of the Episcopal Church, its worship, its structure, its
history, and the faith it teaches and lives, are invited to gather in the
Rector’s Parlor (in Seabury Center, Parking lot level) with your Interim
Rector. For some, this will be a ‘refresher course’ – for others this will be
a preparation for Holy Confirmation, or to be ‘officially’ received into
the Episcopal Church when the Bishop comes to Saint James on
Saturday, May 13, 2017, at 10 AM for that purpose. Please let me know

Tuesday, November 8, is Election Day. In the United States,
every citizen, age 18 years and older, is privileged to have a
vote in the election of our nation’s leaders, whether for
local, state or national office. Exercising this privilege is not
only a right, but a responsibility, not to be taken lightly, or to
be ignored. Please take the time to reflect on your vote, to
pray that you will make a wise choice among the
candidates, and, to pray that God will guide, inspire, and
direct each of us as we vote, and, to pray that all those who
are chosen to lead our nation, state, or community, will do
so with wisdom, justice, truth, integrity and concern for all of
God’s Creation.
Friday, November 11, Veterans’ Day, at 7 PM, Saint James
Church will host an outstanding musical offering. On that
day, at that time, the Whale Oil Row Committee will offer a
Concert by the Russian Chorus. I have had the privilege of
hearing this group offer a program of traditional Russian
Orthodox Liturgical music and Russian Folk Songs a few times
through the years. This small group of men sings: without
accompaniment, and with extraordinary talent, a program
of traditional Russian Orthodox Liturgical music and Russian
Folk Songs Their presentation is not to be missed.
On Saturday, November 12, at 6 PM, the Anglican Singers
will host a Cabaret Fund Raising Event in Saint James’ Parish
Hall. There will be music, refreshments, and a silent auction.
This promises to be a delightful event. Tickets are $20., and
may be purchased from members of the Anglican Singers,
or from Saint James Parish Office.
This is another event not to be missed.
As we move through the month of November, Saint James
Church, will be calling upon all of us to pledge our support –
time, talent, and treasure – for God’s work in Saint James
Parish and in the world beyond during 2017. Pledge Sunday
is November 13. On that day each of us will be asked to
indicate the level of our own commitment to the Lord’s
work.

Daylight Savings Time Ends:
Sunday, November 6 at 2 AM
Folks often ask how they might determine their own fair share to contribute to Saint James.
The fast, easy answer, is the Biblical Tithe of 10 % of income. Some then question how they
will be able to support other charitable endeavors. That is a fair question. My response:
Pledge for God’s work in/through Saint James, at least $1.00 per week for each $1000.00 of
annual income. Using old fashioned arithmetic, $1.00 per week for each $1000.00 of annual
income equals 5% (plus 2 weeks) of income. ($10,000 of annual income @ $1.00 per week
for each $1000.00 of income equals $10.00/week or $520.00 (5% of $10,000 = $500. The two
extra weeks @ $10.00 per week adds $20.00 to make $520.00 or 5% plus two weeks).
Weighed against the Biblical tithe of 10% this method frees up about an equal amount for
other charitable works ($480.00). This suggestion is not to limit one’s contribution to God’s
work – If you choose to contribute a larger amount relative to your income, that contribu-
tion will be welcomed and put to good use.
Elsewhere in this issue of the NET you will find information about Diocesan Convention on
Saturday, November 19 and 20, in Hartford. The Bishop has asked all Connecticut Parishes
to encourage members to participate in the Convention Eucharist in Hartford at 10:30 AM
on Sunday, November 20. With that in mind, Saint James will celebrate the Eucharist on
that day at 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The usual 10:00 AM Eucharist will be omitted on that day.
Watch for more information about worship on Sunday, November 20.
One day each year the people of the United States are called upon to offer thanks to God
for the beauty and bounty of the world in which we live, and to offer thanks to God for the
freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Please note, in this nation, which prides itself on the
‘separation of Church and State,’ that this one day is set aside by the nation as a Day of
Giving Thanks to God for the freedom and abundance we enjoy. Thanksgiving Day, this
year falls on Thursday, November 24. There will be a Celebration of the Eucharist in Saint
James Church on Thanksgiving Day at 8:00 AM (Please note that ‘Eucharist’ is a Greek
word meaning ‘thanksgiving’). Please do remember to offer thanks to God however you
celebrate Thanksgiving Day – turkey, football, family, or just a day ‘off’ from normal routines.
Sunday, November 27, is the First Sunday of Advent. During Advent we prepare our hearts
and lives to welcome anew the Savior, who is Christ the Lord!!!
Faithfully in Christ,
Fr. Bob

Adult “Inquirers” classes
Confirmation Classes
Classes begin Wednesday, November 2 at 7:00 PM and continue every second Wednes-
day until May 3, with Confirmation for those who desire on May 13.
Inquirers’ classes are open for any and all adults, even those already Confirmed, who
would like to learn, or learn more, about our faith and practice as Episcopalians, with spe-
cial attention to getting to “know” Jesus, as opposed to “knowing about” Jesus.
Please contact Fr. Bob if you would like to enroll in this class or have any questions.
Faith formation class for young people Classes begin on Sunday, November 6 for our young people (6th grade and above). We
will meet on alternate Sunday evenings at 6:00 PM, following the Contemporary 5:00 PM
service. The course offerings are designed to help our young people engage more consciously in
their faith journey and to prepare them for the Rite of Confirmation on May 13, 2017, if they
so desire. Classes will include a light supper and social time as well.
For additional information, please contact co-teachers Carol McCoy at 516.587.3055 or

Building and Grounds Report
October was another busy month at St. James.
Office space air conditioning replacement. D.J. McCarthy installed air conditioning with a
main compressor outside and units inside for the main office, Rector’s office and the
bookkeeper’s office. That job is complete and the system is functioning well.
Organ loft cleanup and repair. Plaster dust from a back wall leakage had been
accumulating in the hidden area above the sacristy and behind the visible organ pipes
that contain the thousands of pipes, large and tiny, and plaster remnants settled in some of
the organ pipes. The leakage has been corrected, and we think we caught the problem
before any substantial damage was done, but the cleanup of the back wall and the pipes
is tricky in such a confined space. The loose and fallen plaster dust has been cleaned up,
and the insurance adjuster has completed his evaluation and is processing the paperwork
for the claim.
Rectory porch repairs. Lori Sarkett has substantially completed the replacement of rotting
wood, scraping and painting where necessary. Many thanks, Lori!
Railing Painting. Diane Theis has completed scraping and painting the rusty steel railings
around the Seabury Center.
Downspout Repair. We are evaluating bids for repair to the downspout which was clogged
with debris and ice last winter and subsequently led to water damage inside. The plan is to
repair and enlarge the opening to the downspout as well as to improve the wiring to the
electric heater in the downspout entrance to prevent freezing and leakage through the
outside walls and subsequent internal damage.
Elevator. The elevator has been inoperative for a few weeks. An initial repair did not fix the
problem. A second repair will be completed when the parts become available. This is a
high priority.
Respectfully submitted,
Bruce Skinner,
Committee Member

Both the St. James Choir and the Executive Committee of the Vestry were delighted with
Will’s audition and interview in September and we are enthusiastic about the opportunity to
work with such a talented young man.
Will is also an accomplished composer, with an extensive list of compositions ranging from
chamber music to orchestral works, as well as sacred choral music and opera. He has
received numerous awards and commissions and we look forward to adding his vocal
pieces to our choir repertoire.
We thank all of you for your prayers during the search process. Please plan to join us at the
coffee hour after the November 6 service, and meet our new Organist and Choir Director!

News from the Music Search Committee
We have a new Organist and Choirmaster!
William David Cooper
The Music Search Committee is thrilled to announce that William David
Cooper has accepted the position of Organist and Choirmaster and will
join the Saint James staff as of November 1, 2016.
Will received bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard; in May
2016, he graduated from the University of California at Davis with a Ph.D.
in composition and music theory. An experienced organist and choir
director, he most recently served as the Director of Music at the
Episcopal Church of St. Martin in Davis, California, from 2013-2015.
A Service of Lessons and Carols for Advent
Sunday, December 11, 2016 at 5:00 PM
At 5:00 PM on December 11, The Anglican Singers, once again vested and back in the
choir stalls, will lead the annual Service of Lessons and Carols for Advent. Along with sea-
sonal readings from Scripture, there will be congregational hymns as well as carols sung by
the choir, including “Remember, O thou man,” “Adam lay y bounden,” Canite tuba,
Biebl’s Ave Maria, and “This is the record of John.” This traditional service is a highlight of
our program year, and one which we jointly dedicate to St. James and the City of New
London. Please join us.

“Come taste the wine … / Come hear the music play. / Life is a cabaret, old chum, /
Come to the cabaret!”
On Saturday evening, November 12, stop whatever you’re doing, put on your glad rags,
grab your loved ones and friends, and head to St. James Parish Hall for a jolly evening of
toothsome hors d’oeuvres and desserts, fine wines, choice items on the silent auction
table, AND a revue featuring a selection of Singers puttin’ on the Ritz. There will be
crooning, duets, dance routines—even a bit of burlesque—all accompanied by our own
inimitable Simon Jacobs.
And this delightful occasion will serve an important and serious purpose: to raise money
for our residency next summer in the U.K., at the Cathedrals of Truro and Exeter. Tickets
are $20/person; you may purchase them at the door or order them in advance by
contacting Katherine Brighty at [email protected].
We promise a good time for a good cause, so mark your calendars for November 12th
and “Come to the cabaret!”

Music on Whale Oil Row
The St. Petersburg Men’s Ensemble
On Friday, November 11, at 7:00 PM, St. James will sponsor a unique concert that is also a
cultural exchange opportunity for the Southeastern Connecticut community. The men’s
quartet from St. Petersburg, Russia, was founded as an independent music ensemble in
2003. The group has regularly toured in the USA since its founding, performing across the
country in churches and cultural centers. Their concerts reflect Russian culture and herit-
age and offer a balance of sacred and classical music by Russian composers and Russian
folk songs.
The four men enjoy opportunities to visit with their American audience and have request-
ed, if possible, to be housed by church members rather than to stay in a hotel. If you are
willing to host one or more of the singers overnight on November 11, please contact Ellen
at the parish office.
A free will offering will be received to support the ensemble on their U.S. tour. A reception
to greet the singers will be held following the concert in the parish hall.

The pantry is now fully operational on the lower level of the Seabury
Center. It took much doing and lots of laborious work by volunteers to
make the move possible. Without the use of the elevator— it made
the move more difficult.
We would love to have you stop by on a Tuesday to check out our new
space. We are open each Tuesday from 10 AM—12 PM and are in
need of additional volunteers to assist with picking up, setting up and
distributing food. Please contact Eleanor Godfrey at 860.442.1405 to
volunteer or to get more information.
Thank you to all who supported the baseball fundraiser. We were able
to fill an entire shelving unit (photo to left) with food for our clients with
the $273 raised. Wow!
While loading the food into several vehicles at Big Y, folks stopped and
asked, “are you extreme couponers?”, “will you teach us how to shop
with coupons?” and “is the hurricane coming this way?” People are
funny and it brought a smile to our faces as we were loading the cars.

Socks for the Homeless Hospitality Shelter This holiday season, we are requesting donations of new, white socks for Shelter

you would like to help with sorting and wrapping at the Greening of the Church

We are pretty much recovered from the “flash flood” caused by the water main break. For-

of our goods and clothing went undamaged. We continue to welcome donations of winter
clothes – coats in particular are helpful as the cold weather approaches. We also always
are grateful for household linens and kitchen wares and small appliances.
In response to the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, the volunteers of the shop have
voted to forward four days worth of sales, beginning Saturday October 22, to Episcopal Re-

enduring. Please join us in supporting this disaster relief effort.

Vestry’s Stewardship Statement
The Episcopal Church teaches the biblical tithe as the standard of stewardship. The Vestry
of St. James believes that they and all parishioners strive to understand and meet that goal
as they personally are able. Adopted by the Vestry
November 15, 2004
Stewardship Committee
Each Sunday we adorn the Altar with flowers (except during Lent),
light a Sanctuary Candle, and consume bread and wine. The Altar
Guild pays for these from gifts given by members, families and friends
of St. James. If you would like to assist one week, an altar flower
donation is $45; sanctuary candle, $5; and, communion wine or
communion wafers, $10. Your donation can be made as a memorial honoring someone
deceased, or as a thank-offering to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or other special event
in your life. Contact the parish office or an altar guild member for more information.
As always, more than one person can make their offering in any given week. If you’d like
more information, speak to any member of the altar guild or contact the parish office.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME, TALENT, AND
TREASURE AT SAINT JAMES
Stewardship Sunday is on November 13. As a part of our stewardship of St. James, pledge
folders have been sent out to all households during the week of October 31. Please
prayerfully consider your relationship with St. James and the many needs that our Church
strives to meet, in both our community and in the world. Remember that a pledge to St.
James is what we estimate we will be able to give during the next year; if your needs
change, the pledge amount can change as well. We would love to have a response from
every St. James parishioner, no matter what they're able to pledge at this time!
