Feast of Corpus Christi The feast of Corpus Christi, instituted in the 13 th century to honor the Blessed Sacrament, is a time when Catholics show their love for the Real Presence by honoring Christ in a special and often times public way. It is celebrated in June on the Thursday after the feast of the Trinity, with the solemnity transferred to the following Sunday. Tradition calls for an outdoor procession with prayers and benediction at each altar station. It’s true that Holy Thursday has always been regarded as the day dedicated to the Holy Eucharist, but because it occurs in the sorrowful season of Passiontide, the Church chose another day in a more joyful time to thank Our Lord for the great gift of His own Body and Blood contained in the Blessed Sacrament. The feast of the Blessed Sacrament was established in 1246 by Bishop Robert de Thorte of Liege at the suggestion of St. Juliana of Mont Carvillon. St. Juliana, a Belgian nun in Retinne, lived during the time of St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Louis. She received her inspiration from Our Lord for the following reasons: 1) that Catholic doctrine receive aid from the institution of this festival at a time when the faith of the world was growing cold and heresies were rife; 2) that the faithful who love truth and piety may be enabled to draw from this source of life new strength and vigor to walk continually in the way of virtue; 3) that irreverence and sacrilegious behavior towards the Divine Majesty in this adorable Sacrament may, by sincere and profound adoration, be extirpated and repaired; and 4) to announce to the Christian world His will that the feast be observed. On this feast the Church urges all her members to direct their minds and hearts toward the Blessed Sacrament, in adoration, gratitude, and humble petition to Jesus Christ, truly present on our altars. It is an appropriate occasion for every Catholic to ask himself honestly if he is practicing devotion to the Blessed Sacrament in the manner and measure expected of him. For example, all should examine their consciences to ascertain whether they are hearing Mass on Sunday with proper devotion, if they are making use of the opportunity to hear Mass at least occasionally on weekdays, and if they are receiving Holy Communion as fervently and frequently as possible. From special visits to the Blessed Sacrament to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and Holy Communion, the Catholic Church has always derived light and strength from the Holy Eucharist. The heroic sanctity of innumerable saints -- martyrs, virgins, missionaries, teachers, parents and popes -- can be ascribed primarily to the spiritual nourishment they receive from devout and frequent reception of Holy Communion. All should strive to make the Blessed Sacrament the center of their Catholic lives. Feast of Corpus Christi

The feast of Corpus Christi, instituted in the 13th century to honor the Blessed Sacrament, is a time when Catholics show their love for the Real Presence by honoring Christ in a special and often times public way.
