ALL-POWERFUL YET CARING GOD
It used to be that when I thought, “Old Testament,” I thought of narratives written many centuries before Christ. Then I learned that today’s passage from the book of Wisdom was written less than one hundred years before Jesus came along. These words were so contemporaneous with Jesus that he himself conceiva-bly could have written or spoken them. He certainly lived them.
The Wisdom reading is a poetic prayer celebrating a Creator-God before whom the universe is like a grain of sand, yet who is still lovingly concerned with every individual. This is the God whom Jesus reveals, with unlimited power over all creation, yet watching out for sinners climbing trees.
Zacchaeus was no ordinary tax collector, but the chief tax collector, and “a wealthy man.” But he wasn’t too proud to run ahead and clamber up into a sycamore tree just to get a glimpse of Jesus. Maybe, sinner though he was, he recognized in this wandering preacher the object of the Wisdom poet’s adoration. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

RESPECT LIFE CORNER
The UN estimates that 200 million girls, mostly from India and China, are missing, due to gendercide; the aborting of female babies following prenatal testing. Cultures like India and China value boys over girls
which is based upon century-old tradition. Sons carry on the family name, inherit wealth and perform last
rights for parents. Daughters join the husbands family and are no longer considered part of their birth family.
The result of the One-Child Policy in China is that families routinely abort when a female is identified in pre-natal testing until they bear a son. In India, one
mother admits that she strangled eight of her newborn daughters in her ‘quest for a son’.
