In the back of one of these novels is a guide for a book club. In this guide different questions are asked of the author. One of the questions asks what she is working on. Interestingly enough, she focused on a novel she was writing about a death row inmate. In her response she shared some of her research on gospels that did not make it into the bible. She describes how these gnostic gospels (gnostic comes from the Greek word gnosis which means knowledge) were rejected by Orthodox Christianity and how some important stuff was lost because of this rejection. She says, “Not only were these Gospels lost for thousands of years. . .but so was some of the open-mindedness about faith in general. ʻIf you bring forth what is within you,ʼ Jesus says, in the Gospel of Thomas, ʻwhat you bring forth will save you. If you do not bring forth what is within you, what you do not bring forth will destroy you.ʼ Sounds like a riddle, right? But itʼs actually pretty simple: The potential to free yourself--or ruin yourself-is entirely up to you. And just maybe instead of focusing on the destination, we ought to look at the journey.” Now, having studied a lot of theology I know some of the arguments for why Orthodox Christianity rejected this gospel. However, space here does not allow for me to unpack that argument. I do think though that these words attributed to Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas give us something to think about. I do not think that our ability to free ourselves belongs simply to each individual. I do believe we require a relationship with God (which is the working of grace) to empower our ability to move deeper into the goodness God gives each of us. Yet, I do believe that the power of the Holy Spirit seeks a place in the heart and soul of each of us. How we respond to this power is a complicated thing. Nonetheless, our response is the key to our journey. In other words, how we answer Godʼs call of love for us is central to how our lives are shaped. As members of the body of Christ you and I are called to be the people of Saint Ignatius. I believe it is our responsibility to heed Godʼs call for us a church to serve the community around us. Simply put, all the things we do (fish dinners, rummage sales, resale shops, holy communion, etc.) are not just in service of some heavenly destination. Our service to the community is the journey God has for us. Serving is our journey. And when we do serve it might just also be our destination. See you in Church, Fr. This is Our JourneyMy wife Kris loves novels written by Jodi Picoult. In the back of one of these novels is a guide for a book club. In this guide different questions are asked of the author. One of the questions asks what she is working on. Interestingly enough, she focused on a novel she was writing about a death row inmate. Formation CommissionVacation Bible School is a time to share the stories of our faith. I may not remember all the lessons I learned as a child, nor can I recite all the books of the Bible in order. But, I remember the stories, the Bible stories and the other stories that led me to my faith. For instance, I never forgot my childhood favorites, The Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time, or my young adult fascination with Harry Potter. Those stories awoke a yearning in me, a yearning for mystery, salvation and grace (although I didn’t know those words at the time). I wept when Aslan sacrificed himself to the White Witch, and my heart leapt when he defeated the

Witch in the final battle. I yearned to know the love of the great lion. With Meg in A Wrinkle in Time, I defeated the evil It with the power of love. With Harry Potter, I mourned for Dumbledore and grieved for the tragic love of Snape. I rejoiced when Harry defeated Voldemort through his own death.

Come and join us as we enact Aslan on the Move, and bring Narnia to life for our children (and for ourselves)! Recommend our Vacation Bible School to children ages 4-11. Post fliers around the community. Also, V.B.S. could use a few more volunteers: actors, set designers, crafters, teachers, dancers, singers, and snack providers. Come join the fun! Vacation Bible School is July 28-August 1, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. Contact Linda Mizwicki for more details: 847-401-4915, [email protected]. Formation Commission Liaison

BUILDINGS AND GROUNDSBuilding and Grounds is still looking for a few good men and women. Please consider donating some time to help keep our building and grounds in tip top shape!

As we move forward into the summer months we are looking for volunteers to cut the grass. Our new John Deere lawnmower makes fast work of this task! It now takes only about 2 hours to mow the lawn. A weekly schedule will be posted on the bulletin board for people to sign up for this chore. In addition, a separate schedule will be posted for volunteers to do the trim work.

Finally, we will be posting a list of B&G tasks that need attention. Please take time to review this list on a periodic basis and if there is something that suits your particular talents, please consider volunteering to work on it. Questions regarding this list should be forwarded to the attention of Bill McElligott.

Well thatʼs all for now. God bless and have a safe summer! Bill McElligott, Buildings and Grounds Liaison262-862-9663
