EVERY DAY MATTERS Did you know there’s a really close connection between school
attendance and student success? Students who are chronically
absent (that means they miss 10 percent of the year for excused
or unexcused reasons) are much more likely to struggle in school
and even have more trouble graduating. It makes sense because
every day builds on the one before, making it easy to fall behind.

child’s attendance at

St. Helens Recreation Program Reduces After School Program Fees
The St. Helens Recreation Program will reduce its fees for its After School Programstarting December 1 in part thanks to two grants that were recently awarded to the Cityof St. Helens from the Ford Family Foundation and the Columbia Pacific Coordinated
Care Organization.
The After School Program is hosted at Lewis and Clark Elementary School and providesafter school care for children enrolled in the St. Helens School District in kindergartenthrough sixth grade. Bus service is also available for students of McBride Elementary
School who need transportation to Lewis and Clark to attend the program. Moreinformation about the program is available on the City of St. Helens website at
www.ci.st-helens.or.us/recreation/page/sharp-st-helens-after-school-recreation-program.
Beginning December 1 through June 2018, the After School Program will be availablefor a monthly rate of $225 per child. This reduces the regular rate from $20 per day to alittle over $14 per day. To receive the discount, parents or guardians must pay the full

Elks Teen of the MonthTaylor Dow
St. Helens High School is pleased to announce that Taylor Dow has been selected as theElks Teen of the month for November. Taylor is an amazing student, person, andambassador for St. Helens High School and the community of St. Helens. Taylor is that one of a kind person who is incredibly positive, extremely energetic, involvedin every activity, a natural leader, charismatic, really bright and one of the nicest peopleyou will ever run into. Taylor is all of those things and more and yet she does it all withouteven thinking about it. A story that shows the type of person Taylor is comes from a classthat was working on a simulation about running a political campaign. Taylor was of coursechosen by her group to be the leader of the group and in this simulation you did not have tomake signs or buttons or create T-Shirts as part of the requirement for the campaign, although it was great that she did, it really added to her campaign and set her campaignapart from all of the others. Her teacher asked her later, “What makes you put in all of thatextra time and effort?” Taylor just looked at the teacher, smiled and said something to theeffect of, “Why wouldn’t you put in that time and effort?” I think that sums her up really well. Why not do the best you possibly can all of the time and have fun while doing it? Taylor did say, once she found out she was selected as the Elks Teen of the Month thatshe “Was honored, loves her school and community and it makes someone feel goodabout what they are doing when they get recognized”. Taylor, of course, is involved in everything, she is a star softball player and was chosen 1stteam all-league, 1st team all-state, NWOC player of the year and best teammate on herteam last year. She also works with kids by coaching a youth softball team in thecommunity. She is senior class president, president of the National Honor Society, and haswon the Pamplin Media Amazing Kid award. Taylor believes her best quality is her positive attitude because it contributes to everythingshe does. She also thinks it helps with her leadership skills because the more positive youare the more people you positively impact! Taylor plans on attending college next year and has offers from several schools to go toschool and continue to play softball. Taylor plans on studying accounting. Congratulations, Taylor!
