MISIONEROS DE MISERICORDIA ¡Regresó Pablo! Después del “violento abuso” de la semana pasada, los oponentes organizaron una muchedumbre de linchamiento que golpeó casi has-ta la muerte a Pablo. Sin embargo, llama Pablo el “evangelista energizante”, transformando la cruel-dad mortal en un fervor vivificante. El valor pasado de Pablo debe inspirarnos a nuestro compromiso; el Apocalipsis futuro “nuevo cielo, nueva tierra” debe inspirar nuestro optimismo. Pero el Apocalipsis pre-sente nos asegura: “Esta es la morada de Dios entre los hombres”, debe desafiarnos a hacernos “misioneros de misericordia”. Ya que el Papa Fran-cisco declaró que la credibilidad de la Iglesia está completamente dependiendo de nuestra muestra incondicional de misericordia. La misericordia, co-mo dice Francisco, hace la Iglesia, el mundo y a cada uno joven otra vez, despertando a las virtudes más nobles de la vida. MISSIONARIES OF MERCY Paul’s back! After last week’s “violent abuse,” op-ponents organized a lynch mob that beat Paul nearly to death. But call Paul the “energizing evangelist,” transforming deadly cruelty into life-giving zeal. Paul’s past courage should inspire our commitment; Revelation’s future “new heaven, new earth” should inspire our optimism. But Revelation’s present as-surance, “Behold, God’s dwelling is with the human race,” should challenge us to become “missionaries of mercy.” Because Pope Francis declared that the Church’s credibility is completely dependent on our showing unconditional mercy. Mercy, said Francis, makes the Church, the world, and everyone young again, reawakened to life’s noblest virtues. Fittingly, in today’s Gospel Jesus reinforces that theme: “This is how all will know you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

EL SELLO DE LA CONFESION Parte I Para nosotros, como Católicos, nuestros tesoros más sagra-dos son los sacramentos. Dos de ellos somos capaces de reci-bir de forma regular. Estos son la Eucaristía y la Confesión. En los últimos años, bajo el pretexto de seguir la justicia, algunos países y varios estados de esta Unión han intentado aprobar leyes que intentarían obligar a los sacerdotes católi-cos a romper el sello de la confesión para denunciar abusos y otros crímenes. En primer lugar, cualquier tipo de abuso es horrible y hay muchas maneras de trabajar para combatir el abuso, pero esta no es la forma. Para un estado o un país el aprobar tales leyes es atroz por muchas razones. Uno, ataca una doctrina fundamental y práctica de la Iglesia Católica y, por lo tanto, es una invasión a la libertad religiosa. No es la jurisdicción del estado lo que define lo que constituye un sacramento. El Papa Francisco recientemente dijo que el sello de la Confesión es esencial “"por la santidad de la Santa Cena y para la libertad de con-ciencia del penitente... Ningún poder humano tiene jurisdic-ción, ni reclama, sobre "el Sello de la Confesión. Entonces, ¿qué es el "Sello de la Confesión"? Se expone en el párrafo 1467 del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica y en los cá-nones 983, 984 y 1388 del Código de Derecho Canónico. En Resumen, lo que se dice en el confesionario permanece en el confesionario. Los sacerdotes están obligados por el secreto absoluto y nunca pueden revelar lo que se les ha confesado. Los sacerdotes no pueden violar el sello por ninguna razón, ni siquiera para mantenerse fuera de la cárcel o para salvar su propia vida. Y ha habido sacerdotes en la historia de la Iglesia que han sido encarcelados y martirizados por esa mis-ma razón. La violación del sello no es sólo un pecado grave a los ojos de Dios, sino también un crimen bajo la ley de la iglesia. Cualquier sacerdote que viole esa sagrada confianza es automáticamente excomulgado y sólo puede ser perdona-do por el Papa. En un libro titulado "El Sacerdote en la Oración", E. Escri-bano, C.M. escribe; "La Iglesia, a quien el Espíritu Santo lla-ma 'paloma mansa', y a quien todos llamamos 'Santa Madre', parece olvidarse de su mansedumbre cuando se trata de de-fender la pureza y el respeto debido al tribunal de la Peniten-cia. Por extraño que parezca, un sacerdote indigno puede profanar el Cuerpo Santísimo de Cristo y el Sacrificio de au-gust mil veces celebrando sacrílegamente, y Ella, la Novia del Cordero inmolado, guarda silencio, y no tiene ninguna san-ción canónica en reserva para el profeso; pero si ese mismo sacerdote debe deshonrar su ministerio confesional una sola vez, a través de cualquier falta de circunspección y respeto hacia incluso los más humildes de los penitentes... la Iglesia olvida su dulzura, arroja su mansedumbre de una paloma y una Madre, y se convierte en un águila que desciende hacia el ataque, una Leona defendiendo a su descendencia con sus garras y rugidos ensordecedores.” ¿Se dan cuenta de que sus sacerdotes están listos a morir por ustedes? ¿Para proteger lo que han confesado a Dios? ¡El sello de la confesión no sólo une a los sacerdotes, sino a todos! Cualquiera que tenga conocimiento de lo que se dice en una confesión está obligado por el sello. Si accidentalmen-te escuchas lo que se dice en el confesionario, - por el bien de la reputación de esa persona y la salvación de tu propia alma,- tu única opción es llevar eso a la tumba. ¡Es por esto que esa luz roja sobre el confesionario es tan importan-te! La II parte se publicará en dos semanas, en el boletín del 2 de Junio. El Mensaje del Párroco de la próxima semana será una presentación de uno de los seminaristas que estará con nosotros durante el verano.
THE SEAL OF CONFESSION Part I For us as Catholics, our most sacred treasures are the sac-raments. Two of them we are able to receive on a regular basis. They are the Eucharist and Confession. Over the last several years, under the guise of pursuing justice, a few countries and several states of this Union have attempted to pass laws that would try to force Catholic priests to break the seal of confession to report abuse and other crimes. First, any type of abuse is horrible and there are many ways to work to combat abuse, but not this way. For a state or country to pass such laws is appalling for many reasons. One, it attacks a fundamental doctrine and practice of the Catholic Church and is therefore an assault on religious freedom. It is not the jurisdiction of the state to define what constitutes a sacrament. Pope Francis re-cently said that the seal of Confession is essential “for the holiness of the sacrament and for the freedom of con-science of the penitent…No human power has jurisdiction, nor claim, over” the Seal of Confession. So, what is the “seal of confession”? It is spelled out in par-agraph 1467 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church and in canons 983, 984, and 1388 of the Code of Canon Law. In summary, what is said in the confessional stays in the con-fessional. Priests are bound by absolute secrecy and can never reveal what has been confessed to them. Priests can-not violate the seal for any reason whatsoever, not even to keep himself out of prison or to save his own life. And there have been priests in the Church’s history who have been imprisoned and martyred for that very reason. Violation of the seal is not only a grave sin in the eyes of God, but also a crime under Church Law. Any priest who violates that sa-cred trust is automatically excommunicated and can only be pardoned by the Pope. In a Book entitled “The Priest at Prayer”, E. Escribano, C.M. writes; “The Church, whom the Holy Ghost calls a ‘meek dove’, and whom we all call ‘Holy Mother’, appears to forget her meekness when it is a question of defending the purity and the respect due to the tribunal of Penance. Strange as it may seem, an unworthy priest can profane the most holy Body of Christ and the august Sacrifice a thou-sand times by celebrating sacrilegiously, and She, the Bride of the immolated Lamb, keeps silent, and holds no canoni-cal penalty in reserve for the profaner; but if that same priest should sully his confessional ministry once only, through any lack of circumspection and respect towards even the lowliest of penitents…the Church forgets her gen-tleness, throws off her meekness of a dove and a Mother, and becomes an eagle swooping down to the attack, a lion-ess defending her offspring with her claws and deafening roar”. Do you realize that your priests are ready to die for you? To protect what you have confessed to God? The Seal of Confession not only binds priests, it binds eve-ryone! Anyone who has knowledge of what is said in a con-fession is bound by the seal. If you accidently overhear what is said in the confessional—for the sake of the reputa-tion of that person and the salvation of your own soul—your only choice is to take it to the grave. This is why that red light above the confessional is so im-portant! Part II will be published in two weeks, in the June 2 bulle-tin. Pilgrimage with Religious Sisters of Mercy
A Young Women’s Pilgrimage to New Orleans with the Religious Sisters of Mercy will be Memorial Day week-end, Friday evening, May 24 through Sunday after-noon, May 26. Single women, Ages 18 to 40, interested in learning more about religious life and having a time of prayer are invited to participate. There are no quick fixes to grief. No easy answers. Every expression of grief that wants to be felt and honored and given its space must be allowed in order to heal. If you or someone you know has experience the death of a love one (a spouse, friend, sibling, parent, child) you may want to consider participating in this five weeks Bereave-ment Program. You do not have to be a Catholic, there is no time limit as to when the person(s) died and there is no cost all are welcome.
