W E L C O M E

This year the U.S. Catholic Bishops have chosen the theme “Be Not Afraid” for the Pro-Life efforts of 2017-2018. This phrase, and similar ones like

“have no fear” occurs in the Bible 140 times. I guess God really wanted to make sure we heard this message! It may seem strange that this is the theme for the prolife movement, but fear is often the reason why people choose death over life: a fearful young unmarried woman, a couple fearful that they can’t afford another mouth to feed, an elderly person afraid of pain and a lingering illness, a family dealing with a disabled member afraid for the future – it is often fear that drives people to make the tragic choice of abortion and euthanasia. There is also fear of speaking up for life. Catholics and others of good will who firmly believe in the right to life and the sanctity of human life in all stages, are often afraid to defend life. Those who oppose the prolife message can come on very strong and even violent, and we pro-lifers don’t want that kind of confrontation. Perhaps our own family members, friends, colleagues believe abortion is a “right” and we just don’t want to get into it with them. We hesitate to stand at abortion clinics to pray, let alone confront the employees or the unfortunate patients going into the clinic. No one wants to be called a hater or anti-woman or uncompassionate in the face of the difficult situations people find themselves in. Abortion, artificial contraception, invitro fertilization (and other artificial means of

conception), partial birth abortion (for late-term babies), suicide, physician assisted suicide, selective eugenics policies – the choices people make that perpetuate the culture of death is long and tragic. Our throwaway culture sees only some life as valuable, and anyone else as expendable if they become a burden or a barrier to a preferred lifestyle. Even though polling data suggests that more than half of our nation believes in the right to life, our media elites (news and movie stars) and our elected officials are still driving a proabortion message, funding Planned Parenthood and world-wide efforts to export our birth control to third world countries. How can anyone face such an onslaught of popular culture? How can one person, one parish, or even the Catholic Church itself fight such opposition? We fear our efforts to rescind Roe v Wade are wasted, we fear our children are being formed by institutions that don’t believe what we believe, we fear we’re the laughing stock of modern culture—the Church is so backwards! We fear we have no voice, no strong leaders, no one fighting to protect the lives of the most vulnerable. So what do we do when we’re afraid? We freeze, we do nothing. We stay quiet. And even if we think “someone ought to DO something,” it doesn’t drive us to act. So I say: ACT. Even in small ways. For example, the annual Pennies from Heaven collection seems like nothing but it raises hundreds of thousands of dollars in our county to fund centers that save lives. This is no small thing. Our local Precious Life Shelter is making a difference every day for dozens of moms and babies. The prolife message may not be popular but it is the truth, and the truth will always set you free. Learn why the Church teaches as She does in matters of life and be not afraid!

Pro Life Holy Hours for Monday, October 16th and Thursday, November 16th

plus planning upcoming Spring activities.

A Time for Prayer The 100th anniversary of Our Lady's apparitions at Fatima is coming up next month on October 13. On each of the 6 apparitions she urged the children to pray the rosary daily. In lieu of the fact that

the world is becoming increasing dangerous isn't

it time to heed her plea? Pray it at home or join us at 8am each day before 8:30 Mass, also Monday evenings at 6pm in the room next to the chapel. In celebration of the anniversary we will be reciting the rosary at noon on Oct 14 outside in front of the church. Hope to see you there. Our Lady will be smiling.

The Diocese of Orange, St. Hedwig Parish, and St. Hedwig School join in:

"PENNIES FROM HEAVEN." Please take home a baby bottle (one per family if you plan to

participate) after Mass this weekend, Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th. Boxes of baby bottles with information

inserts will be at all the front exits of the church. Please return these bottles the last two weekends of October with your

donations of coins and dollars and or checks (made out to St. Hedwig with "Pennies" in the comments section). Proceeds will

help Mothers and Babies in crisis thanks to the efforts of Precious Life Shelter here in Los Alamitos, Mary's Shelter,

Casa Teresa, Obria Medical Clinics, Horizon Pregnancy Clinic, Vietnamese Hot Line and Life Centers. Last year $265,447 was raised in the Diocese of Orange. Approximately $10,000 came

from St. Hedwig Parish and St. Hedwig School, thanks to your generosity.

Please return ALL baby bottles to a Mass the last two weekends of October: October 21st/22nd and October 28th/29th.There will

be volunteers at a table set up outside the church for this purpose.

(Last year only 1/3 of the bottles were returned (costing us $$$ to replace). We are hoping that all 900 bottles will be returned to

be reused next year. Thank you! To volunteer to assist with Pennies From Heaven, please contact Santa Campuzano, 562-596-2980.

Although Autumnfest is over, the potential for

fundraising in our annual event has not come to an end. We are thankful for

California Pizza Kitchen at the “Shops at Rossmoor” for their generous donation of

2000 Fountain Drink Cups for our Soda Booth.

In addition, that location of CPK is inviting all attendees to join in their Autumnfest “Pizza with a Purpose” Fundraiser on October

11th and 12th benefiting St. Hedwig Autumnfest.

Flyers available at Autumnfest will assure that 20% of your purchase gets donated back in support of our

annual Parish fundraiser.

Message from SHIP (Self-Help Interfaith Program)

A great big THANK YOU to all who so generously supported the guests at SHIP recently. Not only were the meals delicious and plentiful, but your many donations of

clothes, linens, cash and other needs were greatly appreciated! The guests felt very encouraged by those who stayed for dinner and fellowship. Once

again, our parishioners demonstrated an outpouring of love for those less fortunate who are striving to get their lives back on track.

Special recognition and thanks to the Isidorians who have faithfully provided the first night's dinner for 17 years!
