PASTORAL LETTER
PASSIONTIDE, HOLY WEEK AND EASTER As I sit to write, it still seems early in Lent. Our soup lunches and
our Study Group are underway, but Passiontide, Holy Week and
Easter still seem a little way off. It’s also Saturday evening and I’ve
still got a sermon to prepare, from a passage quite early on in Luke’s
Gospel in which Jesus laments over the city of Jerusalem. It’s a
powerful, prescient moment and Jesus seems to have a deal of foreknowledge of what is to come: speaking for God in the Temple,
rejection, death and, on the third day, resurrection – all of which he
calls a fulfilment or completion of God’s work.
Over the next few weeks we remember and even seek to re-enact the high drama of the last week in Jesus life. On April 14th we celebrate
Palm Sunday and Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, riding on
a donkey, embodying the ‘Prince of Peace’ motif that we read of at
Christmas time.
Both parishes are processing from their respective village halls this year, which requires that each starts 15 minutes early: 9.15am from
Shipbourne and 10.45am from Plaxtol. In Shipbourne we will also
be making a dramatized reading of the whole of the Passion of
Christ according to Luke.
Maundy Thursday (Apr 18th) is the day on which we remember the Last Supper, the institution of Holy Communion, and the suffering
of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane prior to his arrest, trial,
flogging and crucifixion. This year we begin at Shipbourne at 8pm
and adjourn to Plaxtol for a vigil from 9.30pm till midnight. Here we
seek to follow Jesus’ bidding to his disciples: “Stay with me, remain here with me; watch and pray!”
On Good Friday (Apr 19th) we observe the three last hours at the
cross, beginning with a choral service at Shipbourne at 12.00noon.
We will then walk with a full-sized cross to Plaxtol in time for a
quieter ‘last hour’ of hymns, readings and reflections. I wonder if you have ever noticed the Calvary Garden at Plaxtol? On the South
side of the church tower, facing the road, is a depiction of the
crucifixion, given by Wilmott-Phillips, who was the Rector of Plaxtol
about 100 years ago. We shall gather here, under the gaze of the
crucified Christ, at 2pm.
Only the suffering and the shocking mortality of God that we
remember in Passiontide brings us to the joy of Easter. We gather
for the Easter Ceremonies at 8pm at Shipbourne on the Saturday
evening, and after the usual early service at 8am on Easter Sunday,
which is at Plaxtol this year, our main services are both Family Communions as we celebrate with as many “Hallelujahs” as possible
the good news of the resurrection; 9.30am at Shipbourne and 11am
at Plaxtol. Watch out for the possibility of chocolate eggs of these
occasions too!

between 9 and 10 am on Saturday 20 April, when we shall be
decorating the church. If the weather warms up, we shall use yellow
and white tulips on the windowsills, as the daffodils may be going
over by then.

SCOTTISH DANCING IN SHIPBOURNE VILLAGE HALL We had three sessions in March in order to practise new steps for a Master Class held at Paddock Wood on 16 March and attended by
six of our members. As I write, this is yet to happen so a report on
the success or otherwise of this class will appear next month! A
brief respite then in April with our first session in the Village Hall on
Tuesday 16 April and another on the 30th at our usual time of 7.15pm until 9pm. Our dancing level falls a little short of our
aspirations so please don't be put off by the "Master Class" and
come along if you would like to give it a go!

THE WEATHER IN FEBRUARY The average day temp. was13.50c, the average night temp. was 1.40c, the highest day temp was Wed. 27th with 220c, this must be a
record for February, the lowest night was -3.50c, total rainfall was
56.5mm, with 17 days in a row with no rain, the average rainfall over
the last 25 years was 64mm, with the highest being Feb. 2014 with
126mm, and the lowest Feb. 1998 with 15mm, according to the Met
Office this has been the hottest February since records began. Lionel Stielow
BIRDWATCH As previously mentioned, we are repeating some of Ian’s monthly nature notes as a tribute to him following his death at the end of last
year. He contributed his Birdwatch to the newsletter for five to six years and this was written about ten years ago.
There are a huge variety of bird feeders on the market, so popular is
the practice of enticing the wild birds in our gardens even closer to
our homes and windows, and even small groups of farmers looking to diversify from conventional farming now supply this demand for
specialised bird food for this niche market. Along with the rest of
them, my garden in winter has its collection of wire cages crammed
with peanuts, sunflower hearts and mixed seeds and it is worth
every penny to see the acrobatics at close quarters of the Blue Tits,
Great Tits, Robins etc. At times of hard weather this most certainly helps sustain the birdlife when without help things get a little
tough.
Greater Spotted Woodpeckers also have turned to gardens to feast
on this easy supply of food providing the first sight of a woodpecker for many. This spectacular pied-coloured bird with its brilliant red
under belly is a star in any garden and should you continue feeding
during the summer months it is quite likely that the adult bird will
introduce a youngster of the year to your garden. This is easily
identified as it has a completely red crown in its juvenile plumage.
Until recently I have never tried using the feeders specifically
designed for Goldfinches and although having them in my garden I
just could not believe that any bird could get seed out of such a tiny
slit in the side of the container. Let me explain, the feeder for
Goldfinches is a cylindrical piece of clear plastic with tiny slits cut in the sides with small perches underneath and filled with nyjer
seeds (which according to the RHS Wisley is the seed from an
Ethiopian thistle, heat-treated so as not to germinate), and is
available from all good pet shops. After having a party of
Goldfinches visit the garden one cold winter morning to feed on the
lavender seeds, I decided to try the feeder. Success was instant, to the point that I now have three nyjer feeders as they were queuing
up for the one, and I now have upwards of 12-15 birds daily. This
wonderful black and yellow finch with it’s red face is a delight and
with spring fast approaching and the warmer weather they will soon
be pairing for breeding, but it is not to late to try one out. For minimal cost the pleasure of watching a dozen or so Goldfinches is
immense, and there is also the chance of attracting other fine-billed
finches as well. The only Siskin of this winter appeared on these
feeders last week and I am still hoping for the Linnets to “look in” on
us soon.
Walking along any of the watercourses around our village you may
see the Little Egret that seems to have taken up residence recently.
This startling white “heron type” bird was first reported about a year
ago. Since then I have seen it several times in various places
including Fairlawne. Although now well established along most southern estuaries and nature reserves in England it none the less
brings you up short on a misty morning to see this pure white bird
ghosting out of the dark, dank undergrowth.

SHIPBOURNE WI Members were very grateful to Donna Hayler for stepping in, at the
last minute, as the speaker for this month’s meeting. Donna spoke
to us about The Journey to Santiago, “A Pilgrim’s Experience”. She explained that people had various reasons for walking the Camino,
which for Donna, began in St Jean de Luz in south west France,
and continued across the Pyrenees for 790 Km to Santiago, in three
sections of two weeks each. An attitude of openness and reflection is
essential for a pilgrim when following the Camino, in order to benefit
from an external and internal journey. With many experiences along the way, both good and not so good, Donna achieved her goal
and was able to visit the tomb of St James and attend mass in the
Cathedral. Her talk was both very moving and inspirational.
A programme of events to celebrate our Centenary is being designed with a range of activities planned so do watch this space next month
for more information.
Next month’s Committee Meeting is on 3rd April, and the main
meeting on 10th April, when Martyn Harrison will be speaking on
“Les Miserables to Lion King - 35 years of British Musicals”. It’s fitting that the Item of Interest should be a theatre programme.

The Shipbourne war memorial in St Giles’
churchyard features The Great War dates of 1914-
1919. Although the armistice, signed on 11
November 1918, ended the actual fighting, it took
a further six months of allied negotiations to
conclude the peace treaty. The Treaty of
Versailles was signed on 28 June 1919. The Treaty
ended the state of war between Germany and the
Allied Powers.
Shipbourne will be commemorating this important
centenary with various special events throughout
2019.

UPDATE - BOROUGH GREEN GARDEN CITY
You may recall that Tonbridge & Malling submitted their Local Plan
to the Planning Inspectorate in January, and two Inspectors have now been appointed. A very strongly worded letter has already been
received from those Inspectors demanding more evidence, and
setting a deadline of 29th March, or the Plan will be severely
delayed.
A Local Plan is supposed to be Evidence Based - you assemble the evidence and the list of proposed sites, and from that you estimate
housing numbers and where they go. TMBC seem to have drafted a
Plan, and are now trying to find (or fudge) the evidence to suit. They
haven't even finished the A20 Traffic Study, a road that was severely
congested, and is very likely to come to a grinding halt when 6,800 houses are built.
We have incontrovertible evidence that sometime in the past few
years there were secret meetings between the BGGC Consortium
and TMBC Planners, leading to BGGC becoming TMBC's Flagship
Housing Policy, despite the severe constraints on the sites.
We suspect that the scheme was drafted and presented to TMBC
Planners as a complete plan, and because their resources and time
are so severely limited, they accepted it whole and without question.
We have lodged Freedom of Information requests for details of those
meetings, but those FOIs were refused. We now have a complaint running with the Information Commissioner's Office to force TMBC
to release this damning information. More at www.boroughgreen-

KENT POLICE
To report a non-urgent crime, call 101. Kent Police have launched a
new online reporting service: The public can now report crimes and incidents as well as non-
injury road traffic collisions ONLINE directly through the website
(www.kent.police.uk)
NEW WASTE AND RECYCLING COLLECTION SERVICE 2019 The new contractor, Urbaser will be taking over from the existing
contractor (Veolia) on 1st March 2019.
In terms of the public, there will be no change to the service, except
for the livery on the vehicles changing and the staff appearing in
new orange uniforms. Every Borough resident should receive an introductory leaflet from Urbaser and the Council explaining the
change and also drawing attention to the new service improvements
being introduced from 30th September 2019. If you have not
received the leaflet please let TMBC know. A separate leaflet
explaining the new service improvements is being sent out with Council Tax bills next month.

CLIMATE CHANGE
Shipbourne Parish Council will be looking at Climate Change in
2019 and the topic will feature on our monthly agenda and will be
considered in our responses to planning applications. If you have
any ideas or are involved in any schemes to help address climate change we would love to hear from you.
KENT VOLUNTEERS
Kent Volunteers is an initiative of The Lord Lieutenant of Kent to
promote volunteering in the County. Organisations can advertise

SHIPBOURNE SCHOOL NEWS
The year is flying by at Shipbourne School. At the beginning of April,
pupils will join together to celebrate Easter at St Giles's church
before breaking for the Easter holiday. On their return, Tinley Class
will be looking forward to visiting Home Farm to see the lambs,
while everyone anticipates the next Creative Day, focusing on art inspired by music.
The new term also brings a number of staff changes as we say a sad
farewell to Mrs Pattanshetti and Mrs Bass, both long-term members
of staff who will be dearly missed, says Terri Daters, Interim Headteacher. In their place we welcome Miss Pitcher, a new teacher
joining us from a local school.
As the weather improves, much is planned for outdoor learning and
school children may well be spotted ‘habitat hunting’ on the
Common. They will also be raising money for Cancer Research by taking part in a whole school Race for Life. If you would like to help
Shipbourne School raise money for this worthwhile charity by
sponsoring our children, please do pop in to the office during the
school day. Photos of the event will be on the school’s website.

SHIPBOURNE FARMERS MARKET The arrival of April sees spring really starting to get into gear as
longer days with more light stimulates growth and make us all feel better after a long grey winter(apart from the early arrival of summer
for quite a few days in February !).
Celebrate the Easter break (which this year falls on Sunday, April
21, Good Friday on April 19th and Easter Bank holiday on April
22nd) with all kinds of good things in season now– oysters, venison, crab and early salads such as rocket are at their peak and other
goodies are all starting to appear. However, April still comes with a
rather restricted choice of fresh seasonal produce to choose from,
which makes it the perfect month to try some of the prepared
products such as quiches and pies available at the market.
Fish and seafood lovers will find sea bass, cod, halibut, cockles,
mussels and scallops all at their finest now. For meat eaters enjoy
a wonderful joint of beef or pork for a family Sunday roast. For
poultry look out for guinea fowl, whilst game dealers have venison,
rabbit and wood pigeon available. With the longer days, lettuces, spinach, cucumber and spring onions are starting to arrive, taking
over from the brassicas such as cauliflower, purple sprouting
broccoli, cabbages and kale
Keep on cooking with rhubarb, now moving from the bright pink early forced variety known as champagne rhubarb into the darker
and more sour outdoor version. Rhubarb is a versatile fruit that
works in both sweet and savoury dishes but do make sure you add
the right amount of sugar to balances the sour. A really good
rhubarb fool is a seasonal pleasure, especially when made with local
cream as the new grass is starting to add richness to the dairy
produce, maybe flavoured with ginger. And local apples are still good as the storing varieties keep well into this month.

COOKERY CORNER
RHUBARB AND ORANGE POLENTA CAKE With both oranges and rhubarb at their sweetest and best now
bring them together for this simple versatile cake recipe, which
works well as a pud with ice cream or in slices with tea or coffee
Makes one 20cm cake/Prep: 15 minutes/Cook: 1 – 1 ¼ hours
150g butter
200g caster sugar
grated rind and juice of 1 large orange
3 medium eggs, beaten
150g polenta
1 ½ tsp baking powder
75g ground almonds
400g forced rhubarb, trimmed and thickly sliced
1 tbsp granulated sugar
1. Preheat the oven to 180C/ Gas Mark 3. Butter and base-line
a loose-bottomed deep 20cm cake tin.
2. Cream the butter until soft then beat in the caster sugar and
orange rind and continue beating until pale and fluffy. Beat
in the eggs a spoonful at a time. Fold in the polenta, baking
powder and ground almonds to give a soft mixture that drops easily off a wooden spoon. Spoon half the mixture over
the base of the cake tin.
3. Arrange the rhubarb over the cake base then drop the rest of
the mixture over the rhubarb, leaving gaps.
4. Bake in the preheated oven for 1 – 1 ¼ hours until well-risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre emerges
clean and dry. Make holes in the surface of the cake with a
skewer then scatter the granulated sugar over the top of the
cake and sprinkle with the orange juice,
5. Cool in the tin for 15 minutes then remove and leave on a
wire rack to cool. Serve warm with crème fraiche or vanilla ice cream or cool completely and serve sliced with coffee.
THE GARDEN SHED
April is perhaps the most exciting month in the garden year, with a
full display of spring flowers and ideal growing conditions. Colour and interest come not only from the bright flowers, but also from
the unfolding foliage on trees and shrubs.
As I promised last month, I would like to explain in detail how to
keep a family lawn in good condition:
Rake out as much of the moss and thatch as you can from the lawn. For a large area it might be worth hiring a scarifier
to fully scrape the lawn.
Treat the lawn with a moss killer combined with a fertiliser.
Between now and the end of September give the lawn one or two treatments of a fertiliser combined with a weed killer.
In October, spike and aerate the grass to ease compaction. On a smallish lawn you can do this with a pitchfork.
Mow regularly. Be sure the blades are at their highest setting when you start mowing in the spring.
Other jobs this month:
Thin out flowering shoots of Mophead and Lacecap hydrangeas, cutting a few of the old stems to ground level.
Start thinking about stakes before your plants actually need them.
Cut back Perovska and Romneya (Californian tree poppy) near the base of the stems.
If you have time, deadhead daffodils to minimise wasting energy on seed production.
Plant out sweet pea seedlings.
Prune forsythia, cutting out some of the old wood each year.
Protect the news shoots of Hosta against slugs.
Prune grey-leaved shrubs such as Artemesia, Phlomis, Senecio, Sage and Santolina.
Summer-flowering heathers can be sheared now, as the new shoots begin to grow.
Working amongst the colours, scents and exuberant life of the
spring garden will hardly seem like work at all. And the fruits of you
labours will stretch several seasons ahead. Enjoy them!
