Sunday, June 30th Weekly Bingo

Our weekly Bingo will resume this Sunday, June 30th, at 2 PM. Come out for an afternoon of fun while supporting St. Gertrude Church. Door open at 1 PM.

St. Vincent de Paul In today’s Gospel we see how Jesus, on his way to Jerusalem, sent “messenger on ahead of Him. To be the messengers of God, we must know well what it is God wants to say and do through us, as he sends us out to bring his love to others. In the month of June, you were the “messenger of God” in bringing hope to the poor. Your gifts enabled the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul to assist in bringing food to fami-lies in our church community 2019-2020 Religious Education Registration

The registration for the 2019-2020 school year has opened. Completed forms along with your pay-ment, may be placed in an envelope and dropped into the weekly collection. New student applications can be picked up at the rectory or on the table in the back of the church.

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time How do we know when we are being called by God? Sometimes a call is very clear: this is what we need to do. Other times a call may be less obvi-ous, and it may take more time to discern such a call. What is certain is that each of us will be called, at different times and in different ways, according to our personal strengths and weaknesses. While the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah were called in dramatic visions, Elisha’s call came with a simple but singular event: the prophet Elijah ap-proached him as he was plowing and “threw his cloak over him” (1 Kings 19:19). Elisha immediate-ly understood—this was a sign he was to follow Eli-jah and inherit his mantle as prophet. We are familiar with how, at the beginning of his ministry, Jesus called the fishermen to follow him and how they dropped everything to do so. The events in today’s Gospel happen much later, after Jesus has determined he is to go to Jerusalem, and —Luke informs the reader—there are already fore-bodings about his fate. Jesus is well enough known that some people approach him and want to go with him, but they are met with warnings about the difficulties that lie ahead. Others summoned by Je-sus want to say good-bye to their families first; Je-sus shrugs them off and continues on without them. The urgency of the task ahead demands im-mediate and total dedication.

HOW CAN YOU TELL? One of the ways the Spirit is constantly breathing new life into the church is in the practice of spiritual direction. In addition to our personal prayer, spir-itual directors can provide support for discerning the promptings of the Spirit in our lives Benedic-tines, Dominicans, and Jesuits are known for their work in spiritual direction and in training others as directors. By now the Church is blessed with any numbers of priests, sisters, and lay people who help others discern and respond with the strength and dedication required to follow Jesus, wherever the journey may take us.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! First and foremost, we thank God for Blessing us with a hot, but beautiful weather! We thank our church commu-nity who came out and worked so well together to make our 44th Annual Catfish Festival a huge success! St. Gertrude Church is truly blessed to have so many dedicated people who are always willing to step and help out whatever the task may be. May God bless each and every one of you abundantly!
