Dear Friends at St George’s,

March is upon us, the call of spring with its warmer days, spring flowers and green shoots of promise, gladden our hearts and encourage us all out of ‘hibernation’, and to engage with the beauty that surrounds us. March is also the month for two patron saints, St David who is associated with Wales and St Patrick who is associated with Ireland. According to legend, Saint Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity to Irish pagans. However, March is also when we celebrate Mothering Sunday. It is sometimes commonly known as Mother’s Day and is always held on the fourth Sunday of Lent, because this was when Christians would visit their 'mother church', which is also why we often refer to it as Mothering Sunday. Other countries like the US specifically refer to the day as Mother's Day as theirs was not founded through religion.

A mother we often associate with God is the Virgin Mary or Mother Mary as she is sometimes called. She features prominently in the life of Jesus and many will argue that mothers have a strong and influencing role in the lives of their children and ‘nurturing’ is often a word ascribed to mothers. In fact, it doesn’t matter how old you are, how strong or independent, you will always be your mother’s child and many an adult child will still acquiesce to a mothers say-so!

So, celebrate your mother either in memory or with them and thank God for all the loving caring mothers who will shape the next generation and generations to come.

What we cannot celebrate at St George’s is an appointment of a new priest. According to the Chelmsford Diocese, no applicants were forthcoming for the role of priest for St George’s along with the Support Officer post. It is very disappointing. Probably didn’t help that neither job description actually appeared initially with the advertisement of the post! We try again, and advertising will be throughout March with an interview date set in early May. Keep praying that the right person is out there somewhere and will come to St George’s.

Best Wishes Carolyn and Beverley Churchwardens

ladies. Underwear in Africa is in short supply and these can be re-made for the African Ladies.

Cream Tea Afternoon:- will take place on Sunday 8th March from 2-4pm in the church Hall. There will be several stalls, crafts, beauty products, scents, cards and books.

Come along for a delicious cream tea nd bring your friends and family. All proceeds , in aid of Church funds.

Lent groups: will take place on Thursday evenings during Lent 5th, 12th 19th,26th March and 4th April at 7.45pm refreshments for an 8pm start. The 5 sessions will be held at Clive & Lesley’s house, 60 Warescot |Road. If you have not been before, and would like to come, please talk to Lesley on 01277 215619. All welcome.

During Lent the Church is dressed in purple as a time of preparation and we do not have flowers. On mothering Sunday 22nd March it is traditional to give out small posies and at Easter we have Lilies. Whereas usually we use silk flowers, to save on costs, for these services we use fresh flowers. The flower fund at the moment is empty, so if anyone would like to make a small donation it would be much appreciated. There is a box at the back of the church for this purpose. Thankyou.

AGM :- The Annual General Meeting this year will be held on Sunday 19th April at 12pm after Church in the Hall. This year Carolyn , our Churchwarden reaches the end of her 6 year term, so we need to appoint a new Churchwarden. We also present the accounts and sign these off.

The Churchwarden needs to be a regular attender at Church, have not been bankrupt and to be CDB checked, but anyone can do this. If you would be willing to stand for Churchwarden or join the PCC please talk to Carolyn or Beverley.

We also need more volunteers to read, to write the Prayer of the Faithful and to welcome people into Church. We have recently lost 2 readers, Jim and Kitty, so we do need more people to help.

Help is available with writing the Prayer of the Faithful.

Next PCC Meeting:- Monday 9th March at 8pm in the Church hall.

Vacancy News:- At the current time we have advertised for a new priest during February without success. The advertisement will be re-run in the Church Times and on the Diocesan website with the hope of attracting a good applicant. We hope to interview in early April.

Porch News : - We currently have £191,000 in the porch fund and are in negotiations with the Architect and builders

to agree a total price and start date. Further d8iscussions will take place at PCC meeting on Monday 9th March.

LENT- CHRISTIAN SPIRITUAL CONVERSION

“Conversion” is our calling. Jesus said “Follow Me!” Remain in me as I remain in you” (John 15 :4-5.) St Paul said “Let this mind be in you, as it was in Christ Jesus”(Phil 2:5) “Be transfigured by the renewing of your mind” (Romans12:2.)

At heart this means “turning round from serving ourselves by putting God first”

From being self- sufficient…. To being dependent on our Heavenly father in total trust.

From being self-centred… to being Christ Jesus centred.

From being self- pleasing..to being directed and enabled by the Holy Spirit.

This lent let’s go deeper in our discipleship and become closer to the Mind of Christ.
