Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary TimeToday's Reading: Jer 38:4-6, 8-10; Ps 40:2, 3, 4, 18; Heb 12:1-4; Lk 12:49-53We reflect upon the voice of the prophet in this Sunday's readings. We hear of the suffering and the rescue of Jeremiah. We hear how Jesus anticipates his suffering and death. As with Jeremiah and Jesus, the prophets were sent by God to the leaders and people of Israel. A prophet is one who speaks truth to the powerful, exposing their darker hidden motives and injustices. The prophet presents a way forward that aligns with God's purposes. A prophet can force people away from a comfortable neutrality or indifference. The prophet creates an urgency to make a choice: Are we content with the status quo, or are we to change our ways and pursue a new and better path? Today, we may also ask, how do we identify and respond to prophets of our time? How might we provide a prophetic voice in our Church and in our world?

On fireJesus' intentions to 'set the earth on fire' and to cause division were disturbing to his listeners, and may be disturbing to us, too. In the Old Testament, fire was seen as the means of God's purification and judgment, truly a gift to the people. The fire destroys our illusions about ourselves and our behaviors. It burns away obstacles to a loving relationship with God. God's fire melts any institutions, beliefs, or practices that enable evil and injustice.Jesus came to expose evil and thereby force decisions about God's true nature and purposes. Divisions emerged because of the diverse choices people made. Does Jesus represent

some demonic power, or the true God? Do we fight to preserve current attitudes and behaviors, or do we enter the path offered by Jesus? In evoking fire, Jesus is certainly not suggesting violence or disrespect toward others. Jesus lights a fire, and then in his death, bears its results. It is a fire of sacrificial love, melting cold hearts and bringing light to a darkened world.

Keep your eyes on JesusThe author of the Letter to the Hebrews places Jesus at the center of faith. The author uses the Greek word archegos, translated as 'leader.' This rich word includes various meanings: pioneer, instigator, and captain. Jesus blazed the trail, showing us how to run the long-distance race of faith--with steadfastness and courage. To a community experiencing persecutions and discouragement, Jesus is known as the exemplar of faithful endurance.In 'keeping our eyes on Jesus,' we confront what often is the most persistent obstacle to our faith--discouragement. Our faith-filled focus on Jesus enables us to see reality as filled with the presence of God. God is neither distant nor indifferent; God is close and passionately loves us. Discouragement results in part from seeing mostly sin and darkness in our world and in ourselves. Jesus, God and human, reminds us of the divine activity within us and among us.

Predators groom their victims, and part of this process is designed to make the victim feel like they should trust their predator, even more so than their own parents. Many victims also have a fear that their parents or trusted adults won’t believe them, or that they will get in trouble for what happened — sometimes an abuser will threaten a child, using the child’s fear to buy the child’s silence. It’s important for parents to teach their children to talk with their parents about what is happening to them, what might be frightening them, and that they will be supported in disclosing. Vigésimo Domingo del Tiempo OrdinarioLecturas de hoy: Jer 38:4-6, 8-10; Sal 40 (39):2, 3, 4, 18; Heb 12:1-4; Lc 12:49-53Traer fuegoLas intenciones de Jesús de 'traer fuego a la tierra' y causar división preocuparon a sus oyentes, y también podría preocuparnos a nosotros. En el Antiguo Testamento, el fuego era visto como el medio de la purificación y juicio de Dios, verdaderamente un don al pueblo. El fuego destruye nuestras ilusiones acerca de nosotros mismos y nuestras conductas. Elimina los obstáculos de una relación amorosa con Dios. El fuego de Dios derrite cualquier tradición, creencia o practica que permite el mal y la injusticia.Jesús viene a mostrar el mal y de ese modo impulsar decisiones acerca de la verdadera naturaleza de Dios y propósitos. Las divisiones surgen a causa de las distintas decisiones que las personas hacen. ¿Jesús representa fuerzas demoniacas o al verdadero Dios? ¿Peleamos para perseverar comportamientos o conductas existentes, o entramos al camino que Jesús nos ofrece? Al evocar el fuego, Jesús sin duda no está sugiriendo la violencia o la falta de respeto hacia los demás. Jesús enciende un fuego, y luego en su muerte, produce sus resultados. Es un fuego de un amor de sacrificio, derritiendo corazones fríos y trayendo luz a un mundo oscurecido.

Mantén tus ojos en Jesús El autor de la Carta a los hebreos pone a Jesús en el centro de la fe; además usa la palabra en griego archegos que puede traducirse como 'líder'. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults The R.C.I.A. is for:

• Adults who have not been baptized• Adults who were baptized in another faith but are seeking a home in the Catholic

Church• Baptized Catholics who have not yet received First Communion and Confirmation

Program Information:• English Sessions on Thursday Evenings from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.• Spanish Sessions on Tuesday Evenings from 7:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.• One (1) year program

Requirements:• Completed Registration Form • Copy of Birth Certificate (if being baptized)• Copy of Baptism Certificate (if preparing for Communion and/or Confirmation)• Copy of Communion Certificate (if preparing for Confirmation)• $50.00 per candidate
