JULY 6, 2014
CELEBRATION OF THE FOURTH OF JULY
Amidst the picnics, the barbeques and the fireworks of this Fourth of July weekend let us pause to remember
why the celebration. The Fourth of July is not only the birthday of the nation we call home but it is the
commemoration of the birth of a vision, an ideal for all people, for all nations; it is a recommitment to that vision
of justice and equality, of respect for human rights, of freedom for all people, no one excluded! As we are all too
painfully aware this vision, this ideal is far from reality. This 4th of July is about pledging ourselves anew to
work with every fiber of our being to bring this vision, this great dream to reality for all people.
FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
In the first reading from the prophet Zechariah the people of Jerusalem had been awaiting the restoration of the
kingdom as it was before the Babylonian Captivity where the kings reigned and Israel was a powerful nation.
However, it was becoming clearer to the inhabitants of Jerusalem that the kingdom would not be restored at this
time but that the Messiah and the Kingdom would come at a later time. Also, the king would not be a warrior
riding on a war horse, but a gentle and gracious king riding on the foal of an ass as a humble man of peace. He
would do away with the implements and tools of war, chariots, horses, warrior’s bows. He would come as a “just
savior”, proclaiming peace to the nations. His dominion shall be from sea to sea, from the river to the ends of the
earth.
In the Gospel reading for today, Jesus echoes this image of himself who comes as a “man of peace”, “meek and
humble of heart.” He invites us to come to him when our life is burdensome and “he will give us rest, for his
yoke is easy and his burden is light.”
Perhaps there is a connection between the holiday that we celebrate on the 4th of July, the birth of our nation, and
the message of the Scripture for this weekend. Is America the nation to come as a conqueror, a warrior nation
brandishing the tools and weapons of war or are we a nation that comes in peace, a meek and humble nation,
bringing justice and peace for all peoples to the ends of the earth? Which is our vision? Which is our dream?
The grace, peace and love of Our Risen Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you,
Father Doug Sister Kathleen Michele Bergeron

Commitment forms last weekend. We received 111
commitment forms indicating new or renewed
commitments to parish ministries. We take great pride in
the many ministries and services offered at St. Gabriel

for the generous support of parishioners like you. Please
accept our sincere gratitude for the commitment to parish
life you demonstrate.
If you did not turn in your Ministry Commitment form,
it’s not too late to do so. Please feel free to put it in the

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history.
It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not
the least of which was the desire of the bishop to
minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do
with the early crisis of how to deal with persons
baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with
the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no
matter how wrong-headed the minister might be,
Christ would always work in the waters of baptism.
No matter what, God would sweep aside all human
obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were
not so sure about the ability of someone who had
broken with the church to confer the Spirit.
By the fifth century, already-baptized persons
coming into the church were anointed with chrism but
not rebaptized. This anointing with myron or chrism
was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church, and
a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer.
Today, we preserve this ancient practice by never
“rebaptizing” Christians who have been baptized in
water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We affirm the candidates’ baptismal dignity, and we
celebrate confirmation at their first reception of the
Eucharist. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Mission Immersion Retreat
Led by: Matt Rousso & Fr. Gerry Kelly, M.M
Immersion trips offer an invaluable first- hand
experience of the history, traditions, cultural and
religious expressions, and social issues from other parts
of the world. Begin in Guatemala City where you will
have the opportunity to participate in a dynamic
workshop focusing on the current reality of Guatemala as
experienced by peoples in various parts of the country.
Take part in a prayer service at San Sebastian Parish, the
martyrdom site of Bishop Juan José Gerardi Conedera, a
strong human rights advocate. Move on to Esquipulas,
the pilgrimage town where hundreds of people gather
daily to venerate the famous sculpture of El Cristo
Negro, enshrined in the beautiful basilica of Jesu Cristo
Crucificado. In Esquipulas, participants will live in a
simple mission house, Casa Nazareth, located in the
very poor barrio of Santa Ana. Each day will include
Morning Prayer and Evening Theological Reflections,
along with time for private meditation.
Flyers are on tables around the Church describing costs
and registration. Contact Matt Rousso for more
information at 866-8516 or [email protected].

Summer Stretch: Expand Your Faith
Faith is an integral part of our lives; it is interwoven
into everything we do. Summer is a great time to
refocus on faith, fellowship and fun.
• Make Mass a Priority: Resist the temptation to
skip Mass during the summer months or when you
are on vacation.
• Do Some Spiritual Reading: Set aside some special
time to introduce your children to the lives of the
saints.
• Visit a Holy Place: Take a day trip to a monastery,
a shrine or a famous church. There are many in and
around the New Orleans area to choose from.
• Simplify Your Life: Summer is a great time to sort
through clothing, toys, sports equipment and other
possessions with the intention of sharing what you
have with people who are less fortunate. Or have a
garage sale and donate the proceeds to charity.

FR. IGNATIUS M. ROPPOLO MEMORIAL
ENDOWMENT
Fr. Ignatius Roppolo was a long time mentor and
personal friend of mine, Matt Rousso and Fr. Doug
Brougher. He died on April 29, 2014, just a few
weeks before his 60th anniversary of ordination.
Some of you may remember Fr. Roppolo who
celebrated Mass for us on a few occasions and
assisted us with the Advent and Lenten Penance
Services. He was an outstanding priest. During all
his years of priestly ministry, Fr. Roppolo was a
humble, generous servant of Christ and his people.
He was consistently trying to make the church more
inclusive through his ministry to the sick and the
poor, his commitment to racial justice, and his
efforts to include the laity in all the ministries of the
parish, offering training and formation and inclusion
in decision making. Because of his great witness, we
decided to set up a Memorial Endowment within the
Catholic Foundation for the purpose of continuing
and expanding the legacy he left us. We have
entitled the Endowment, “Promoting an Inclusive
Church.” If you would be interested in learning
more about the Endowment and how you might
contribute, you may contact Fr. Doug at
[email protected] (504-491-1565), Matt Rousso at
[email protected], (504-376-4142) or Fr. Doug
Brougher or access St. Gabriel Parish Web Site,
www.stgabe.net and click on “Fr. Ignatius M.
Roppolo Memorial Endowment ” under What’s
New. Handouts giving a full description of the
purpose of the Endowment are available on the
tables at the entrances to church.
