Sirach 15:15-20; 1 Corinthians 2:6-10;
Matthew 5:17-37
We don’t like to hear it, but we are responsible for our actions! The first reading tells us that we can choose to do good, or we can choose to do evil. We are in charge. And we must take the responsibility for our deeds. We can chose life, or we can choose death. God does not com-mand anyone to sin; in fact, he makes sure that no one is ever tempted beyond the strength to resist. So what excuses do we have for our behavior? Our Christian moral code goes beyond our natural inclinations; it even goes beyond the com-mands of the Old Law. The former law commanded us not to murder; Jesus says we are not even to be angry. The old law said that we must not commit adultery; Jesus says we must not have lust in our heart. The old law commanded us to fulfill our vows; Jesus says that if we are truly loyal to him, oaths are unnecessary. He com-mands us to say what we mean, and always to act according to our good conscience. Our second reading speaks of “wisdom.” Pagans thought that “wisdom” was speculation and argumentation. Paul says that real wisdom is to know the mystery of God: that he loved us so much that he sent his Son to save us, and that his Son died and rose that we might have life. Let us always have the wisdom to seek to know God’s will at all times, and the courage to do his will. Remember, we are respon-sible for our souls.

Fr. Don’s Doodlings Salt and Light. Last Sunday we heard Jesus referring to us, his disciples, as the
“Salt of the earth,” and the “Light of the world.” Pretty awesome, right? It soundslike Jesus thinks highly of us. And has some high expectations of us.
In “homilizing” about this I mentioned stewardship, and how this is our way ofdoing exactly what Jesus is expecting of us. So, I want to add to the complimentthat Jesus offers us, and also give you a brief report on the renewal.
The results of our stewardship renewal last October were very encouraging. We are delighted that 513 commitment cards were received from 48% of activehouseholds. These families pledged 3,978 prayer commitments, and also pledgedto serve in 2,120 parish ministries. This includes 439 new commitments toministries. 439 new ones! That’s great. In fact, that’s a good example of why it’simportant for us to do the renewal every year – it gives the opportunity for folks toget involved in a new ministry, to try something different. Plus, there were 1,681re commitments to parish ministries. We also received 385 offertory commitments, pledging over $700,000 to St. Francis
Parish in the coming year. This represents 75% of participating households. We’resure that the other 25% of those households will also be giving throughout theyear. To tell you the truth, I don’t pay much attention to what is pledged, becauseI know that so many of you say that you’ll give, but you don’t want to pledge anyamount, either because you don’t want others to know, or because you fear youmay not be able to fulfill your pledge. But I find that you always give more thanwhat was pledged, so I trust you and I trust in God to provide.
Finally, there were 44 families who were not previously involved in any ministrywho have signed up to participate in parish life. That’s great! And the reason thatdelights me is that the whole purpose of our annual renewal is to encourage allparishioners to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. It’s all about putting fleshon the bones of the living of our Catholic Faith – putting our faith in action.
So, thanks to all those who have generously pledged to participate actively bygiving of your time, talent and treasure. And if you didn’t return a stewardshipcommitment card, please remember that it’s never too late to get more involvedin living our Catholic Faith.
Indeed, you are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Dear Parents,With the cold and flu season upon us, we are doing our very best tokeep your children safe from any germs that may be carried into ourschool. We have had our cleaning crew sanitizing the building everynight for quite some time, and encouraging students to wash hands
frequently. Our highest total of students out for one day last week was36. Numbers have been better this week, but we are being very
proactive. According to our handbook on page 46:“If your child is sent home with a fever, they should not return to school
unless he/she has been fever free (without Tylenol or other feverreducers) for 24 hours. If the fever is associated with a contagious
disease, longer absences from school may be required. Any child with atemperature of 100 or above will be sent home.
If vomiting occurs, your child should be kept at home until he/she cankeep his/her food down and is eating normal again.
If a student is ill, the principal has the discretion to send a child home.”We realize this may pose a daycare issue for you and we apologize for
that, but we are looking at the larger picture for all of our schoolchildren and doing our best to keep them healthy.
