The Share the Word Program Needs Your Help! Share the Word is a program for children ages pre-school through kindergarten. It is run during the 10:15 mass on most Sundays during the school year excluding holidays. At the beginning of mass, Father asks the children to gather around the altar for a prayer and then we proceed to the back classrooms in the church. Once there, our teachers share the weekly gospel with the children in a way they can understand through crafts and stories. We are in need of volunteer teachers. We will provide you with all materials and training to run the class. The commitment is currently one hour of service (during the 10:15 Sunday mass) once every 4-6 weeks during the school year.

The program will begin on September 22. If you have any questions or are interested in donating your time, please contact Lisa Coughlin at [email protected].

St. Francis religious education students are making a difference! Join us on our bottle and can redemption campaign to help our environment and bring clean water to those in need. Bring your recyclables to the Bottle Redemption Center at 25 N Middletown Road in Nanuet behind Marshalls and mention you are supporting St. Francis of Assisi. Hours are Mon. - Fri. 10am to 6pm and Sat. 10am to 5pm.

We can all make a difference!

St. Francis of Assisi – Our Patron Saint

The feast of our Patron, St. Francis of Assisi, is October 4. I begin today a series of articles about him as we get closer to his feast day. This way, you can get to know him a little better and maybe learn something new about this man who has influenced so many in the life of the Catholic Church. I take this information from a great article by Fr. Jack Wintz, OFM.

“Francis was born in 1182 in Assisi, Italy. He was the son of a prosperous cloth merchant, Peter Bernadone. His companions saw him as a carefree youth, calling him the ‘King of Revels.’ Francis enjoyed partying with his friends and had dreams of becoming a knight and gaining glory on the battlefield. But shortly after riding off to fight against Perugia, a nearby town, he ended up in their prison, a broken and disillusioned young man. It was after his return from prison, and during the recovery that followed, that Francis’ life was changed.

There are seven key points in the life of Saint Francis which we may reflect on. First - Francis Meets a Leper Like most of his contemporaries, Francis felt a disdain for lepers and avoided them at all costs. One day, before his conversion, Francis was riding his horse alone in the countryside. As he moved along the road, he caught sight of a leper walking toward him. Francis’ instinct was to turn back or move off to the side to avoid contact with the poor wretch. But Francis instead rode directly toward this man with parts of his face and hands eaten away by this dreaded disease. Francis dismounted his horse, and warmly embraced and kissed the leper tenderly on his lips. In his Testament, Francis writes, ‘When I was in sin, the sight of lepers nauseated me beyond measure; but then God himself led me into their company, and I had pity on them. When I had once become acquainted with them, what had previously nauseated me became a source of physical consolation for me. After that I did not wait long before leaving the world.’ Francis eventually came to realize that he had actually embraced none other than his Lord, Jesus Christ. Francis soon found himself living with lepers and caring for them. His meeting and embracing the leper was the best preparation Francis could have had for the founding of a new order in the Church, whose highest ideal was to serve the poorest of the poor. Sometime later, Francis was praying alone in front of a crucifix in the abandoned chapel of San Damiano, located down the hill from Assisi. Suddenly, Francis heard these words of Christ coming from the cross: ‘Francis, repair my house, which is falling into ruin.’ Francis took these words literally and began rebuilding the abandoned chapel. He realized later that it was a much bigger house, the Catholic Church itself, that Christ was asking him to rebuild. (7 Key Moments in the Life of Saint Francis, Fr. Jack Wintz, OFM)

Anointing Mass ~ St. Aedan’s, Pearl River Saturday, October 12th - 12 Noon - All Are Invited.

The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is a beautiful gift from God. It is a sacrament that is administered to a Catholic “who, having reached the age of reason, begins to be in danger due to sickness or old age.” It is a sacrament which provides comfort, peace, courage and, if the sick person is unable to make confession, even forgives sin. Whenever a new illness develops or a first illness relapses or worsens, the person may receive the sacrament a further time. It may also be given numerous times in the case of old age or chronic illness based on the pastoral judgment of the priest. This is not to be confused with what we traditionally refer to as the “Last Rites” which involves a three-part reception of the sacraments of Anointing, Penance and the Holy Eucharist or Viaticum. “Through this Holy Anointing, may the Lord in His love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin, save you and raise you up.”.
