First, he’s a fisherman, which is probably sufficient in my book. Additionally, in spite of any formal education, St. Peter showed flashes of brilliance in testifying that Jesus is the Christ on two separate occasions. I also find his courage, although convenient and impetuous at times, to also be remarkable. How many of us would draw our swords in the face of the bands of soldiers arresting Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane? Which of us would actually get out of a boat at night during a storm because Jesus invited us to do so? But to me, the single most admirable quality of St. Peter is his perseverance. St. Peter never gives up. When Jesus tells Peter to get behind him and calls him Satan, St. Peter doesn’t throw a fit and leave. When St. Peter turns away from Jesus and sinks into the sea after Jesus invites him to walk on the water, he still grabs Jesus’ hand to be raised up. When St. Peter tells Jesus that Jesus will never wash his feet, he doesn’t turn away at Jesus’ gentle rebuke. Most of all, when St. Peter denies Jesus three times, he doesn’t run off and kill himself as Judas did. Rather, turns back to Jesus for forgiveness. Notice what happens next. Throughout the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the apostle boldly proclaiming the Good News to the Jewish crowds is none other than St. Peter. This is remarkable. The same man who, in the solitude of the high priest’s courtyard, wouldn’t admit that he even knows Jesus, now preaches the Good News to huge crowds while being threatened with both imprisonment as well as physical violence. What happened? The obvious answer is the Resurrection, and that is true. But recall that St. Peter’s first encounter with the resurrected Christ doesn’t seem to have much of an effect. St. Peter is still cowering in the upper room weeks after witnessing the resurrected Christ. Something after this led to this transformation. The answer, hopefully, is obvious. Pentecost. It is Pentecost where the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, descends upon St. Peter and the rest of the disciples, and it is this power that transformed their lives, especially St. Peter’s! This is what makes the gift of the Holy Spirit so important. When we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, we receive the very bond of love shared between the Father and the Son. We first share in this gift at our baptism. This gift is sealed at our confirmation. If we choose to sin mortally, this gift can be restored to us through the Sacrament of Penance. Best of all, with the gift of the Holy Spirit we are adopted into the very family of God. You see, all of us were born enemies of God because of Original Sin. At our baptism, however, God the Father adopts us by allowing us to participate in the very love that He has for His Son by giving us the Holy Spirit. It is precisely because we now possess the bond of love between God the Father and God the Son that we who are baptized are properly called the adopted sons and daughters of God. Naturally, this same Holy Spirit is willing to transform our lives in the same way He transformed the life of St. Peter. The way we allow Him is through our prayer. As a gift, this power of the Holy Spirit can in no way be earned. Like any other gift, it must be requested. The way we request things from God is through prayer. So this week and every week, pray to be guided by the Holy Spirit. Pray to know what to say, when to say it and how to say it. Pray to know what to do, when to do it and how to do it. The Holy Spirit longs to guide our lives so that we can become instruments of God, but the only way He can do so is through prayer. Blessings, 3RD SUNDAY OF EASTER · April 26, 2020

Friends, I’m a huge fan of St. Peter. First, he’s a fisherman, which is probably sufficient in my book. Prayer of Spiritual Communion: My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most

Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my

heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to

be separated from You. Amen.

The church bells will be rung during the Consecration to alert those wishing to make a spiritual communion at that time.
