    Pastors CornerJesus said to the disciples, You have heard

    that it was said, You shall love your neigh-

    bor and hate your enemy. But I say to you,

    Love your enemies and pray for those who

    persecute you.Matthew 5:43-44,

    from the Gospel reading for July 3, 2016

    During our recent stay with family in North Caroli-na, Tony and I visited the Guilford Courthouse, a nationalmilitary park that stands on the site of a RevolutionaryWar battleground. Touring the museum, I came to the re-alization that the war that took place in this country from

    1860-

    1865 was actually our second Civil War. The Revo-lutionary War was our first.At Guilford Courthouse I read about people living

    in North Carolina, who were loyal to the British, beingrounded up and massacred by the revolutionary forces.Loyalists did the same thing: British sympathizers round-ed up rebel forces and slaughtered them. People whowere once neighbors became enemies, fighting each otherto the death.

    We human beings have a seemingly infinite capaci-

    ty for violence and bloodshed. Jesus calls us to a differ-ent way. Love your enemies, he tells us. Pray forthose who persecute you. After acts of terror like themass killings in Orlando, Florida, were tempted to liveinto our fears. Fear tells us to distrust people we dontknow. Fear tells us to limit the freedoms of people whoselifestyle or beliefs differ from ours. But Jesus cautions usabout thinking in terms of us and them. All human

    beings are beloved of God. Even those we think dontdeserve it. We are all Gods children. Thanks be to God.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~DEACONS ARTICLE~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Ever have one of those weeks in which you wondered if there was any good news to be
    heard? I had one of those weeks not so long ago. News of critical situations came each day of
    the week starting on Monday and going through Friday. Five very different, very dificult life
    situations, each one occurring within a different social network or settingnews of an unex-pected divorce, a new life-threatening diagnosis, a friends loved-one entering into hospice, a
    911 call to a friends home, and a friends broken relationship with her son.
    We all understand that life happens and that life at times is dificult. I can recall my
    mother saying that bad news travels in threes. As a child, I thought that following the third
    piece of bad news it would all be good news from there. Well, we know the truth about that,
    right? I was wondering by Thursday, as each day presented a new element of sadness, despair
    or angst, if any good news would surface that week?
    Thankfully by the end of that week, I was meeting with my spiritual direction group. As
    we began our meeting I was in need of some good or uplifting news, to say the least. This is
    what was read at the opening of our meeting:
    ..so that, with the eyes of your heart enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you... Ephesians 1:18
    Hope is not always comforng or comfortable. Hope asks us to open ourselves to what we
    do not know, to pray for illuminaon in this life, to imagine what is beyond our imagining, to
    bear what seems unbearable. It calls us to keep breathing when beloved lives have le us, to
    turn toward one another when we might prefer to turn away. Hope draws our eyes and
    hearts toward a more whole future but propels us also into the present, where Christ waitsfor us to work with him toward a more whole world now.
    What are you hoping for these days? Who helps you hope when it is hard to hope? How
    does your hope call you to see what is here and now?Jan Richardson
    The situations of that week still make my heart hurt because of the affection I have for
    each individual. I can pray for and with them, but I cannot ix the problem or issue, nor can I
    make their discomfort go away. I can be a friend and a supportive presence to them when they
    feel overwhelmed and isolated.
    What do you hear in the words printed above? What are
    your thoughts? Maybe, by considering the words andmeaning in Jans relection and probing questions, we
    can discern the hope that we need for the living of these
    daysthe hope that will enable us to place our feet on
    the loor each morning and rise from our beds.
    Theres quite a bit of changes happening in our state just now that could deepen poverty
    and hunger, said Jeanette Mott Oxford of the social welfare advocacy
    organization Empower Missouri. When people are made hungry,
    there really is no good that comes of it. Any notion that people can
    magically find a job just because theyre hungry, is just magical think-
    ing.
    Our food pantries and other charities are already very strapped in our
    state and any amount of new people coming to them will have
    consequences in many of our communities, said Mott Oxford.
    She also noted that Missouri ranks second in the nation in
    the number of people without enough food to eat.
    Our histories cling to us. We are shaped by where we come from.
    St. Francis Book Clubs next choice for a book to read and discuss isAmericanah
    by a Nigerian and American writer. What makes this choice unusual and intri-
    guing for St. Francis is that several members had already read this book and
    wanted a chance to talk about it with others. Thats going to be a good read!Heres what the author has to say about her own book:
    Americanah is about love. I wanted to write an unapologetically old-fashioned
    love story. But it is also about race and how we reinvent ourselves. It is about
    how, when we leave home, we become another version of ourselves. And it is al-
    so about hair
    day during coffee hour. The tellers count and record the cash and checks re-
    ceived during the Sunday Eucharist, and prepare the list for deposit at the bank.
    If the teller team gains a few new members, each teller will work only every four-
    five weeks. Tellers do not need special banking or financial skills and always work
    in pairs to assure accuracy. This is an important ministry for the functioning of ourparish. If youd like to help out, please contact Pastor Sally.
    Bernerts annual Supper with hummingbirds.
    Mark your calendar for Saturday, July 23rd at 6:00. St. Francispeople areready to celebrate our annual Hummingbird Supper.
    No, were not eating hummingbirds for supper. Were eating supper with the
    hummingbirds. Joe and Donna Bernert fill many hummingbird feeders everyday during the summer season. This makes the entire local hummingbird com-munity very happy. They come to the Bernerts to eat, and then they make thepeople happy by displaying their lovely colors as they eat. We can sit on theBernertsporch and enjoy the show. If a person can remain calm and still witha palm full of colorful, sweet bird food, that person can have a hummingbirdcome and feed directly from his/her hand. Its true!
    The birds provide the entertainment for this annual gathering, but we provideour own food and good company. Please bring a dish to share and whatever
    drink you like. Its a great time! Thats why we do it every year. Here are thedetails:
    Building Update
    Our proposed site plan violates Eurekas required setbacks. We requested a code
    amendment from the City of Eureka, which changes the setback requirements for church-
    es. The proposed code amendment was presented to and approved by Eurekas Planning
    and Zoning Committee at 7 p.m. on June 29. Now the code amendment will be presentedto the Board of Alderman for approval. That approval is scheduled for July 5 at 7 p.m.
    After the setback has been approved by the Board of Alderman, our proposed site
    plan will no longer be in violation of Eurekas codes. So the site plan can be presented to
    Planning and Zoning at their meeting on July 13 at 7 p.m.
    Once the site plan is approved, engineering drawings will begin. That process
    should take 8-10 weeks. Once we have engineering drawings, the builder can be selected.
    The Diocesan Commission on Church Architecture and Allied Arts met on Wednes-
    day, June 22. At that meeting the group discussed the process the Diocese will use to select
    the builder. Next steps: The Diocesan Chancellor (the Bishops lawyer) will review the
    proposed construction management agreement from Church Development Services.
    Faith Under Construction, our capital campaign for the new building, is exceedingour expectations. As of June 30, we have received the following pledges:
    Parishioners (3-year pledges) $306,084
    Diocesan clergy and Episcopal churches $ 4,510
    Family/friends of St. Francis $ 3,720
    Total $314,314
    Parish Dates recently added:
    Adopt a highway July 9th 10:00 meet at EHS as planned by
    Jack Lauless.
    Float Trip, August 6th, 11:30 a.m. as planned by George Vits.
    .Strategic Plan
    Review & discuss next steps :
    Kevin Broom led a discussion aimed to review and refresh the strategic plan.
    The first area of discussion had to do with pledging: both the amount of dol-
    lars received and the percentage of pledging units dropped for 2016. Whatthis meant is that we were not able to move forward as planned, particularlyin our drive to pay Pastor Sally at 100% of the minimum annual compensa-
    tion for diocesan clergy.
    The next topic of conversation was about the tutoring program. Is it grow- ing? Is it different? Will that impact future budgets? We need to contact
    Jackie Selle and have her inform the BC so we can do this.
    No action plan now on Shoe Ministry as the Shoeman has gone out of
    business.
    Possible new ministries: Pastor Sally asked that we consider and make apriority a Parents Day Out program and also the Disabled Access ChildrensPlayground.
    Kathleen and Donna talked about planning a garden on site, both for the chil-drens use and for growing produce for the Eureka Food Pantry. We will dis-cuss these three at our next discussion.
    Other reports
    Wardens reports none offered
    Concerns, comments? Pastor Sally asked if we had heard comments thatshe needed to know about. We discussed concerns voiced by some congre-
    gants about changes that are inevitable with a larger membership.
    Closing business
    Temperature check general approval Closing prayer was offered at 2:09 by Michael Booker.
    Next meeting: Sunday, July 17
