We place God first in all things. Centered in the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist, we devote ourselves to proclaim the Gospel. We are dedicated to grow as a faith community to holiness through prayer, sacraments and service to all God’s people. HUMILITY Have you ever been in a group of people—maybe on a tour, at a social gathering, or at church—and discovered that you have just been talking with a well-known author, corporate CEO, great scholar, or politician? Your first thought is the hope that you didn’t say anything to embarrass yourself; but your second thought is how much they seemed like such “regular” folks. What is it that makes people seem so “regular”? Today’s readings give us a clue when they stress the importance of humility. It is so hard for us not to tell the first person who will listen how busy we are, how hard we work, how much mon- ey we donate, and how important our job titles are. We think these accolades make a difference to people, and if we don’t tell them, how will they ever know? But if our actions demonstrate our values, people will recognize our worth on their own. The words of Jesus show us how much better it is to let someone else recognize our worth than to be embar- rassed because someone did not. -Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Perhaps the most familiar tradi onal symbol that iden ‐fies bishops is the crosier that they carry. We see the shepherd’s staff and immediately rich images from scrip‐ture come to mind, as well as the recollec on that the first to respond to Christ’s presence in our world were the shepherds. The staff is more than a walking s ck; its crooked top is useful in snaring errant sheep but also in keeping the flock united. Bishops carry the curve out‐ward, indica ng their ministry to the wider flock, while abbots (and some abbesses, too) carry the crosier with the curve poin ng in, indica ng that their ministry is to the monastery alone. The crosier was once also carried by the pope, but was phased out centuries ago. You may recall that in pre‐“popemobile” days, the pope was o en carried around on a portable throne called a sedia gestatoria. Since he didn’t do much walking, the need for a crosier was minimal. Pope Paul VI introduced the innova on of a walking staff in the 1960s, and everyone remembers Pope John Paul II’s walking staff, not a crook, but a deli‐cately sculptured crucifix. Thus, the pope carries a “pastoral staff” rather than a crosier. Precisely because the pope’s ministry is universal, to the whole world, popes will likely leave crosiers in the hands of the bish‐ops they commission for care of specific flocks. —Rev. The punishment of the wise who refuse to take part in government is to live under the

NO SURPRISES We are told by all spiritual writers that one important point to

bear in mind, as we seek to attain humility, is not to be surprised by our own faults and failures.

Prayers for the Sick and Dying

The Divine Mercy Chaplet is one of the best means of assisting the dying. Jesus revealed the power of this prayer to St. Faustina. The Lord gave many promises regarding recitation of the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the sick and or dying. There are parishioners who regularly pray the chaplet. We are currently forming a prayer chain and accepting prayer requests. If you are interested in joining the prayer chain, please contact Bea Harrigan at (973) 827-0083. If you have a special prayer request for a loved one who is sick and dying, you may call Bea Harrigan, Cheryl Avery at (973) 702-1342, or Denise Drogo at (973) 875-6863.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

(RCIA) The RCIA journey invites those who are inquiring about the Catholic faith to “come and see.” You are most welcome to join the journey. The fall season of our parish RCIA program will begin on Wednesday even-ing, September 14, at 7:30pm.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) provides an opportunity for those seeking to learn about the Catho-lic Church and its traditions to participate in small group gatherings which meet on alternate Wednesday evenings throughout the fall season. The RCIA experience offers a special opportunity to deepen relationship with God, and also welcomes those members of the Catholic community who are seeking to receive the Sacraments of Eucharist and/ or Confirmation to prepare for the reception of these Sacraments. Join us for our first meeting on Wednesday, September 14 at 7:30PM in the Church Conference room. If you are con-sidering becoming Catholic, or would like to prepare for the Sacraments of full initiation into the Catholic faith, or would like a place to start in journeying back to God, please come and see what the RCIA experience can offer. We are also pleased to welcome new facilitators to our ministry, please consider your gift of faith as something to be shared joyfully and come join us. ADULT FAITH FORMATION

Aug 28 , 2016 - 22th Sunday in Ordinary Time. “Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed

indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” LUKE 14:13-14 We have a difficult time with the concept of giving without expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return- a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards we need to remember that the true re-ward for our giving awaits us in heaven.
