COMMUNION SERVICE - WEDNESDAYS A Communion Service is held every Wednesday in church at 8:30 am. The service is about 20 minutes long and includes the day's readings, some reflection, intercessions, the Lord's Prayer, a sign of peace, and Communion. You are welcome to attend.

ST. FRANCIS DE SALES – OUR PATRON: The test of a preacher is that his

congregation goes away saying, not "What a lovely sermon!" but "

I will do something."

Why do you speak to them in parables? What is the best and easiest way to help people understand God's kingdom? Like the rabbis of his time, Jesus very frequently used parables - short stories and images taken from everyday life - to convey hidden truths about the kingdom of God. Like a skillful artist, Jesus sketched memorable pictures with short and simple words. A good image can speak more loudly and clearly than many words. Jesus' parable of the sower is aimed at the hearers of his word. There are different ways of accepting God's word and they produce different kinds of fruit accordingly. There is the prejudiced hearer who has a shut mind. Such a person is unteachable and blind to what he or she doesn't want to hear. Then there is the shallow hearer. He or she fails to think things out or think them through; they lack depth. They may initially respond with an emotional reaction; but when it wears off their mind wanders to something else. Another type of hearer is the person who has many interests or cares, but who lacks the ability to hear or comprehend what is truly important. Such a person is too busy to pray or too preoccupied to study and meditate on God's word. Then there is the one whose mind is open. Such a person is at all times willing to listen and to learn. He or she is never too proud or too busy to learn. They listen in order to understand. God gives grace to those who hunger for his word that they may understand his will and have the strength to live according to it. Do you hunger for God's word? The parables of Jesus will enlighten us if we approach them with an open mind and heart, ready to let them challenge us. Do you submit to God's word with trust and obedience? PRAYERS FOR FATHER RAPHAEL

ROSARY AND PRAYERS FOR OUR PARISH Our Lady of La Salette Sodality members encourage you to pray the Rosary to help preserve our parish. You are also welcomed to join us every Tuesday in the Church at 11 AM. The Rosary and other short devotional prayers last about 35 minutes. Please pray for Our Blessed Mother’s intercession, Father Raphael’s recovery, and for our church at this difficult time. For questions, please contact Pam 688-2642. Thank you.

THURSDAY, JULY 16 (Meeting at the Request of the Archdiocese) Eileen Mulcahy, from the Archdiocesan Office for Planning, has requested a 7:30 PM outdoor meeting with our Parish Council, Finance Committee, and Trustees to discuss the future of our Parish. Chairs will be set up in the parking lot, so PLEASE park on the street. From her presentations to other nearby parishes, we have gathered that her agenda is NOT to tell us we are being closed, but rather to give us the “hard facts” about priest shortages and our financial situation if we have to replace Fr. Raphael. Both Fr. Tom Kiely and Fr, Chris Berean will be at this meeting, along with Tara Calabrese, who oversees our parish finances for the Archdiocese. Ms. Mulcahy has informed Pat Ruane that this will not be the time for us to make a presentation, but there will be an opportunity for Q&A. Ms. Mulcahy indicated she

would return for a subsequent meeting if we choose to make a presentation. Our intent is to listen and engage respectfully, while we offer to partner with the Archdiocese to resolve our needs in a different way than they may be thinking about. Since we have an open Parish Council, anyone who cares to come to this meeting will be welcomed! PLEASE RSVP to Pat Ruane by phone (845 688-5357) or email: [email protected] if you are planning to attend, so we can make sure there are enough chairs set up. Don't forget your bug spray!

PATRON OF PRIESTS – JOHN VIANNEY St. John Baptist Marie Vianney (1786-1859) was born in France to a family that lived a simple life with deep devotion to their Catholic faith. Ordained a priest at the age of 29, he was eventually assigned to a small parish in Ars, France where he served for 41 years. Despite his learning struggles at the seminary, Vianney was known to “have the gift of understanding what was in people’s hearts and minds.” He became a well-known confessor and holy man throughout France. Canonized in 1925, St. John Vianney is the patron saint of priests. His Feast Day is August 4 – which is the birthday of our dear Father Raphael!

Prayer for Priests

By St. John Vianney (Feast Day – August 4) God, please give to your Church today

many more priests after your own heart. May they be worthy representatives of Christ the Good Shepherd.

May they wholeheartedly devote themselves to prayer and penance; be examples of humility and poverty;

shining models of holiness; tireless and powerful preachers of the Word of God; zealous dispensers of your grace in the sacraments.

May their loving devotion to your Son Jesus in the Eucharist and to Mary his Mother

be the twin fountains of fruitfulness for their ministry. Amen.

St. John Vianney, patron saint of priests, pray for us
