Welcome Father Shane

In the Spirit of St. Francis…

In the Spirit of St. Francis ...THANK YOU!

Born in 1973 in Portland, Father McKee graduated from Jesuit High School in 1991 and the University of Portland in 1995 with a bachelor’s degree in theology. From 2001 to 2004, he studied at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, known as the Angelicum, in Rome. He was ordained for the Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 2007. He served as parochial vicar from 2007 to 2012 at St. Ann’s Indian Mission in Belcourt, North Dakota, and as pastor of St. Alphonsus Parish in Seattle from 2012 to 2017. In 2017, he was named parochial vicar of Sacred Heart Parish in Medford.

To Summit Construction for time and materials to replacing a broken window at the Old Hall.

To Anna O’Connor for laundering the altar linens for the month of June.

To Dennis Freiburg who so selflessly jumped in to help out at a coffee Social a couple weeks ago.

To Louise Gorman, Colleen Jeffery, the Aguirre Family and Dave & Amy Cookson who hosted and helped make Fr James’ morning going away parties so successful.

To Willie & Melanie Battilega, Veronica Bosse and the Urmini Family for helping with the going away gatherings for Fr. James after the evening Masses.

To Larry and Carole Laughlin for the beautiful roses for the church.

St. Francis Parish would like to

welcome all newcomers and visitors.

We turn your attention to the

Ministry Table in the narthex of the

church where you will find information

on the various ministries in our parish and how to contact the coordinator.

New parishioners are encouraged

to register by calling the office at

503-625-6185.

We welcome you as we welcome Christ!

Priest Assignment Definitions:

Pastor — He leads the parish as an extension of the ministry of the archbishop. Pastors are to teach, sanctify and govern for the good of souls in a certain geographical area. Pastors are to have ample experience as a priest, normally five years.

Administrator — He leads the parish in the absence of a pastor. Because he does not have as much experience as a pastor, or for some other reason, he will receive help from archdiocesan authorities and his powers will be limited in areas deemed appropriate by the bishop.

Parochial vicar — He shares in the pastoral care of the parish under direction of the pastor.

I just want to take this moment to say THANK YOU

to everyone that stopped by to wish me well last

weekend as my time here at St. Francis has come to

an end. I am grateful for all the love and support

you have shown me over the past three years. I am

also grateful for your many cards, gifts and words of

encouragement over these past serval days!

THANK YOU. Fr. James

This month’s Book-of-the-Month is

TO LIGHT A FIRE ON THE EARTH Bishop Robert Barron ISBN: 9781524759506

As secularism gains influence, and increasing numbers

see religion as dull and backward, Robert Barron wants to illuminate how beautiful, intelligent,

and relevant the Catholic faith is.

In this compelling new book—drawn from conversations with and narrated by award-winning Vatican journalist John L. Allen, Jr.—Barron, founder of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, proclaims in

vivid language the goodness and truth of the Catholic tradition. Through Barron’s smart, practical, artistic, and theological

observations as well as personal anecdotes—from engaging atheists on YouTube to discussing his days as a young diehard baseball fan

from Chicago—To Light a Fire on the Earth covers prodigious ground.

Touching on everything from Jesus to prayer, science, movies, atheism, the spiritual life, the fate of Church in modern times,

beauty, art, and social media, Barron reveals why the Church matters today and how Catholics can intelligently engage a skeptical world.

St. Francis Rosary Makers Update: So far the St. Francis Rosary Makers have made and mailed out 1,200 rosaries to missions in the U.S. There are 9 rosary makers now and they have been making about 300 rosaries a month. They can always use more willing hands. Meetings are the 1st Thursday of each month in the south classroom from 10:00 am to noon. Also a reminder: please donate your no longer wanted medals, holy cards, prayer books, small statues and rosaries. There is a basket on the right side of the outer narthex for the articles. They will be mailed to the Living Rosary in Texas and then sent on to poor missions around the world. Even broken rosaries can often be repaired.

Care Ministry

CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD

In the book of Exodus, chapter 20, God delivered his Ten Commandments to the Israelites. These commandments left very little room for interpretation: "You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.” Many follow these commandments merely as the law instructs us — obeying the law and adhering to the letter of the law. Written in stone, the Ten Commandments prescribed a restrictive code of behavior like bumpers placed in the gutters of a bowling lane to keep the ball from falling off the lane. The Ten Commandments keep us from falling off the lane. A goal of merely staying on the lane is like the third servant who buried his one talent; it is neither bold nor hopeful. The bumpers of the Ten Commandments may suffice for children and the immature, but limit the wise and the mature. In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet Jeremiah describes a new covenant that will be written not in stone but on our hearts. (“The days are coming, says

the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. … I will place my law within them and write it upon their hearts; I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”) Many Jews (and Greeks and Gentiles) came to understand that the new covenant instructs us to live beyond what is written. It instructs us to live with love to honor God. Love knows no boundaries. Justice has no limits. We must live accordingly. Jesus exemplified love without borders. He accepted the death that awaited him. He understood that, like a grain of wheat, he must die to “produce much fruit.” His death, he did not easily accept. He was “troubled now.” St. Paul writes that Jesus “offered prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears to the one who was able to save him from death.” The psalmist sings, “A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.” Just as Jesus prayed for a “steadfast spirit” that allowed him to learn obedience and love, we must also pray for bold confidence to throw on the lanes of boundless love and equal justice rather than limiting ourselves to avoiding the gutters. Prayer for Our Nation Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, Intercede for us, your children in America, as we pray for our nation, our military, and our families. We pray for our government leaders, that they will make just decisions and govern us in accordance with truth and the principles upon which our nation was founded. We ask protection for those serving in the military and for our first responders. Bless them and their families as they sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. We pray for our families. In a culture that seeks to destroy the morals and values upon which this country was founded, may our families be united in faith and charity. Reclaim this great country for your Son’s glory, that under His protection and guidance, we may stand together as a people of faith and trust in Him for the changes we seek. Amen.

What does it mean to receive Holy Communion at Easter time? To receive Holy Communion at Easter time means (in the United States) to receive the Eucharist between the first Sunday of Lend and Trinity Sunday inclusive. Trinity Sunday is the Sunday after Pentecost. St. Paul Family Catechism.

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh” (Jn. 6:51).

Next week: If one has not received Holy Communion during Easter time what should he do?

of the sick at 8:30 am in the church. Come join us this Saturday, July 7.

Beginning Experience of Oregon is offering a Christian-based grief support weekend for teens ages 12-17 who have lost a parent due to death, divorce or separation. Young People's Beginning Experience (YPBE) is July 17-19, 2018 on the University of Portland campus. Beginning Experience programs provide help and support to work through these emotions in a safe, secure environment. The aim of the program is to help sort out the feelings of loss and pain, while strengthening self-esteem and self-acceptance. Cost of the weekend is $225 (including the $50 non-refundable deposit). Scholarships are available. Please visit the website: www.beginningexperienceoforegon.org or contact Judith Holtzinger White at 503-949-4592 for more information and applications.
