Report from your Worthy Faithful Navigator:
Sir Knights,
I wish all Sir Knight’s of St. Francis Assembly and their families a very Happy and Healthy New
Year, and may 2020 bring you all joy and happiness.
Our assembly participated in an Honour Guard for the funeral of SK John Poirier of J.J.
Murphy Assembly 2020 in Barrie. SK John was PGK of Barrie council 1626 and very active in
J.J. Murphy Assembly in Barrie for many years. Most of us knew John either thru the third or
fourth degree. He was a very active Knight and worked hard for both the Council and the
Assembly. We were fortunate enough to have two Sir Knights attend and be a part of the
eight Sir Knights that formed the Honour Guard for the funeral on Saturday January 4th. I
heard from the 2 SK’s that participated and they reported to me that J.J. Murphy Assembly
was very grateful that we were there to support them in this Honour Guard and send their
thanks to our Assembly.
The assembly dinner that we have spoken about for some time can happen on Valentines Day
February 14th. I have the hall booked. I am trying to get Jimmy Lane to caterer the meal and it
would be a sit down served dinner. I am hoping to have some confirmation one way or the
other by our meeting on the 22nd. Please attend and give your input. If we are going to
proceed with this, we will need to decide quickly and if Jimmy is unavailable we will need to
discuss alternatives.
Our next Honour Guard will take place on Family Day weekend which is also flag day from
what I understand. We have participated in this in the past by accompanying Father into and
out of Mass and bringing in the flags. We will also discuss this at our meeting. It will take
place on Sunday February 16th at the 11 am mass. Discussion has been brought forward about
coffee afterwards and we need to confirm this and if someone will organize it at our meeting.
I know our Faithful Comptroller has been collecting dues and it seems that he is almost
received dues from all the Sir Knights. I thank you for your prompt attention and helping to
make the Faithful Comptrollers job a little easier.
As you read we have a few things to discuss at our meeting on January 22nd so I ask that you
make every effort to attend.
Fraternally,
Domenic Sanfilippo, FN

NOTICE OF MOTION
Saint of the Month
Saint of the Month
Saint Agnes Feast Day January 21
According to tradition, Agnes was a member of the Roman nobility, born in AD 291 and raised
in an early Christian family. She suffered martyrdom at the age of twelve or thirteen during the
reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, on 21 January 304. Substantially the circumstances of
her martyrdom are believed to be authentic, though the legend cannot be proven true. A church
was built over her tomb, and her relics venerated. A beautiful young girl from a wealthy family,
Agnes had many suitors of high rank, and the young men, slighted by her resolute devotion to
religious purity, submitted her name to the authorities as a follower of Christianity.
Christians
were persecuted at this time. The Roman prefect Sempronius condemned Agnes to be dragged
naked through the streets to a brothel. It was also said that all of the men that attempted to rape
her were immediately struck blind. The son of the prefect was struck dead but revived after she
prayed for him, causing her release. There commenced a trial from which Sempronius recused
himself, allowing another figure to preside and sentence St. Agnes to death. She was led out
and bound to a stake, but the bundle of wood would not burn, or the flames parted away from
her, whereupon the officer in charge of the troops drew his sword and beheaded her, or, in some
other texts, stabbed her in the throat. It is also said that her blood poured to the stadium floor
where other Christians soaked it up with cloths.
Agnes was buried beside the Via Nomentana in Rome. A few days after her death, her foster-
sister, Emerentiana, was found praying by her tomb was stoned to death after refusing to leave.
Emerentiana was also later canonized. The daughter of Roman Emperor Constantine I, Saint
Constance, was said to have been cured of leprosy after praying at Agnes' tomb. Agnes' bones
are conserved beneath the high altar in the church of Sant'Agnese fuori le mura in Rome, built
over the catacomb that housed her tomb. Her skull is preserved in a separate chapel in the church
of Sant’ Agnese in Piazza Navona in Rome. As seen here.

It was Palm Sunday but because of a sore throat, 5-year-old Johnny
stayed home from church with a sitter. When the family returned home,
they were carrying several palm fronds. Johnny asked them what they
were for.
"People held them over Jesus' head as he walked by," his father told
him.
"Wouldn't you know it," Johnny fumed, "the one Sunday I don't go
and he shows up."
