Some more of Father Tom’s thoughts for this last week in Ordinary Time….. My dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate Christ the King Sunday also known as the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, which is the last Sunday in Ordinary Time before Advent. Pope Pius XI established this feast day in 1925. He intended it as a day to celebrate and remember Christ’s Kingship over all creation, as well as to remind us that all humankind must submit to Christ’s rule. Today’s Gospel reminds us of the end of time by drawing our attention to the last moments of Christ’s earthly life. What kind of ruler is Jesus to us? Are we loyal followers of the Gospel? What would today’s world be if we would simply be good followers of our leader, Christ the King? How do we carry the Gospel message of Jesus forward into the future? Is Jesus the King of our hearts and our lives? Jesus’ death on the Cross is our signpost to Heaven and the road to be followed if we are to make sense of our lives. Earthly kings rule from palaces but Christ the King reigns from the Cross. His kingdom is not a place, but a people who give their hearts and their lives lovingly to Him. For those of us who have forgotten that Heaven is our final destination, the feast of Christ the King invites us to start living our lives as Jesus taught. Christ really becomes our King only when we give Him our allegiance, and in all we do we must seek to grow more like Him. The Kingship of Christ becomes real and visible when we allow God to do His work in us and through us.

Thanksgiving is just round the corner…… Are we ready? As we celebrate this Thanksgiving, each one of us is called to be grateful to God our Creator and King and also to one another. On behalf of Father Eddie and the staff, I would like to wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving Day.

Mass with Anointing of the Sick Saturday, December 7th, at 10:30am

The Church encourages all the faithful, especially the elderly and those experiencing bodily or emotional illness, to attend this Anointing Mass. The Anointing Mass is not only for the elderly or sick but for all of us, so that we too receive HEALING spiritually or physically from our Merciful God. In this Mass we can also pray for our relatives and friends who cannot attend this Mass to receive HEALING.

EL REY DE REYES La encíclica Quam Primas escrita por Pío XI en 1925 se estableció la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Recuerda cómo era el mundo en esos días, el surgimiento del nacionalismo, el secularismo en Europa y falsos profetas que llevaron al Holocausto y vastos martirios. ¡No es de extrañar que el Papa estuviera preocupado por mostrar al mundo a un verdadero rey! Hoy san Lucas va directo a la realeza, de la devoción de un rey a su amado pueblo. En este reino confuso, no vemos a un rey ataviado con poder y gloria, sino al crucificado Rey de los Judíos vestido así mismo en el sufrimiento de un mundo solo y triste. Su perdón y amor desgarrador a lo largo de su pasión es un ejemplo difícil seguir para las per-sonas, y aun así Jesús nos da su vida y muerte como modelo. Y luego él nos dice que, junto con el buen ladrón , estaremos con él en el Paraíso . ¿Qué más podríamos pedir? Mừng kính các thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam, chúng ta cũng kỷ niệm việc thiết lập hàng giáo phẩm đến nay được 50 năm. Vì thế trong một vài phút ngắn ngủi này chúng ta cùng ôn lại đôi dòng lịch sử.

Kể từ khi cha Buzomi, vị thừa sai đầu tiên đặt chân lên đất nước này vào năm 1615, cho tới khi hàng giáo phẩm được thiết lập vào năm 1960, thời gian kéo dài là ba thế kỷ rưỡi. Trong khoảng thời gian này, những thành phần nhân sự dần dần được thiết lập để xây dựng Giáo Hội Việt Nam.

Trước hết là cha Đắc Lộ đã khai sinh ra hội Thầy giảng năm 1650. Chín năm sau, tức là năm 1659, Tòa Thánh thiết lập hai Giáo phận Đàng Trong và Đàng Ngoài, đặt dưới quyền quản trị của hai vị Tân Giám mục là Lambert de la Motte và Francois Pallu, thuộc hội thừa sai hải ngoại Paris. Chính Đức cha Lambert de la Motte trong ba năm, từ năm 1668-1670 đã truyền chức linh mục cho chín người Việt Nam đầu tiên xuất thân từ hội Thầy giảng.

Chín linh mục này làm nên hàng giáo sĩ Việt Nam đầu tiên. Từ việc phong chức linh mục đầu tiên này tới cuộc tấn phong Giám mục cho Đức cha Nguyễn Bá Tòng năm 1933, thời gian kéo dài gần hai thế kỷ rưỡi. Rồi từ khi có giám mục Việt Nam cho tới khi hàng giáo phẩm được thiết lập, thời gian chỉ có 37 năm. Về nhân sự của Giáo Hội địa phương, kế tiếp việc thiết lập hàng giáo sĩ Việt Nam là việc thiết lập dòng nữ Mến Thánh Giá tại Kiên Lao (Nam Định) và Bãi Vàng (Hà Nam) do Đức cha Lambert de la Motte, vào năm 1670.

Cũng trong khoảng thời gian ấy, trải dài hơn ba thế kỷ, Giáo Hội Việt Nam đã gặp phải những cuộc bách hại và cấm cách đẫm máu, khiến cho hàng vạn người đã bị mất mát tài sản, hàng ngàn người đã ngã gục ngoài pháp trường, trong đó có 117 vị đã được tôn lên hàng hiển thánh, gồm 8 giám mục, 50 linh mục và 59 giáo dân. Chính các ngài đã trở thành những hạt giống đức tin, đem lại cho Giáo Hội Việt Nam một vụ mùa bội thu.

Mừng kính các Thánh Tử Đạo Việt Nam, cũng như kỷ niệm ngày thành lập hàng giáo phẩm, mỗi người chúng ta hãy hồi tâm xét mình, kiểm điểm lại cuộc sống xem chúng ta đã thực sự thuộc về Đức Kitô hay chưa? Bởi vì tinh thần của Chúa và tinh thần của thế gian là hai cái gì đối kháng, cho nên chúng ta không được phép bắt cá hai tay, hay lửng lơ con cá vàng, như lời Chúa đã nói: không nóng không lạnh, chỉ dở dở ương ương thì Ta sẽ mửa mi ra.

Hơn nữa, Chúa cũng đòi chúng ta phải dứt khoát lập trường và dành cho Ngài địa vị số một trong cuộc đời chúng ta, vì ai đã cầm cày mà còn ngoái lại đằng sau thì không xứng đáng với Nước Trời. Tuy nhiên chọn lựa Chúa mà thôi chưa đủ, chúng ta còn phải thể hiện sự lựa chọn ấy trong cuộc sống thường ngày bằng cách thực thi những điều Ngài truyền dạy. Bởi vì có thực thi những điều Ngài truyền dạy, chúng ta mới thực sự trở nên là những môn đệ và chứng nhân của Ngài.

Mỗi hy sinh chúng ta chấp nhận để chu toàn Lời Chúa, sẽ là một giọt máu tử đạo chúng ta đổ ra từng giây từng phút để làm chứng cho Chúa Kitô. Suy Tầm

Hôm nay, Chúa Nhật cuối cùng trong năm phụng vụ, Giáo Hội mừng kính lễ Chúa Kitô Vua. Năm phụng vụ mở đầu bằng mầu nhiệm Nhập Thể, khai triển qua

cuộc Tử nạn, Phục sinh để rồi kết thúc bằng vương quyền viên mãn của Đức Kitô. Như vậy, năm phụng vụ tượng trưng cho chu kỳ thời gian bắt đầu từ Đức Kitô và cuối cùng trở về với Ngài. Đức Kitô chính là khởi đầu và là cùng đích của vũ trụ và lịch sử nhân loại. Đặt lễ Chúa Kitô Vua trong Chúa nhật cuối cùng năm phụng vụ, Giáo Hội nhắc nhở chúng ta rằng, Đức Kitô chính là Vua của vũ trụ, Ngài là Chủ của thời gian, của lịch sử nhân loại và Chủ mỗi người chúng ta.

A model of Compassion and Respect

On December 12, we honor Mary as “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” the patroness of the Americas. This feast day offers an opportunity to reflect on living our faith with the love, compassion, and respect that Mary herself exhibited.

On the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, we recall the appearance of Mary before Saint Juan Diego, a poor Aztec Indian peasant, on a hill in Mexico in 1531. Clothed like an Aztec prin-cess, Mary spoke to Juan in his own language. Her request - that Juan go to the local bishop and instruct him to build a church on that very spot took Juan by surprise. Why, he wondered, would a bishop listen to someone as lowly and humble as he? Yet Mary entrusted him with this important task. After first being refused by the bishop, Juan returned to the bishop with a sign given to him by Mary - roses that bloomed, impossibly, in winter. When he opened his tilma, or cloak, the roses spilled out, and inside the tilma was imprinted the beautiful image of Mary as she appeared to Juan. The bishop built the church, and Mary’s love and compassion were extended to the people of Mexico and beyond.

Mary’s kindness and respect toward Juan and sensitivity to his culture are powerful reminders to respect the dignity of others, especially those who are poor or “different” from us. Mary also evangelizes. Over the centuries, she has brought the love of her Son to millions of people who otherwise might not have known Him. Her example is one to emulate in our roles as ministries, teachers, parents, catechists, and believers.

Let us celebrate on December 12th, Thursday and Sunday 15th, the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe with great enthusiastic love.
