From the Pastor’s Desk…

Today we celebrate World Mission Sunday during this Extraordinary Mission Month. Let us remember the mission at the heart of our Chris an faith – to share the Good News with the world! The 2nd Collec on taken up today for the Society for the Propaga on of the Faith supports the priests, religious, and lay leaders who embody Christ’s mercy and presence among the most vulnerable communi es in our world. They have been charged to proclaim the Word persistently; when it is convenient and inconvenient. Let us pray and offer our support for the Church’s worldwide missionary efforts.

Friday, November 1st, is ALL SAINTS DAY – A Holy Day of Obliga on. This means that all Catholics are obliged to a end Mass on this day to celebrate and honor those men and women of days gone by, that have led and modeled for us exemplary lives of faithfulness and solid Chris an living. We will offer three Masses on Friday, November 1st, at 6:30 a.m., 9:00 a.m. and at 7:00 p.m. Please note that there will not be an an cipatory Mass on Wednesday night, October 31st. On Saturday, November 2nd, we will celebrate the Commemora on of all of the Faithful Departed with ALL SOULS’ DAY. Because this day falls on a Saturday this year, there will only be one special Mass celebrated at our usual 8:30 am Mass me. All in our parish are invited and encouraged to a end this special morning Mass to honor and remember your deceased loved ones. This Mass will be a powerful expression of remembrance for those who have gone before us, not only in our parish community but within our own families as well. At this Mass, all will be given the opportunity to personally acknowledge their deceased loved ones. In addi on, if you would like to remember your deceased loved ones in another special way, you may write their names in the spaces provided on the special All Soul’s Day envelope that was included in your October Sunday envelope packet. The envelopes can be placed in the regular Sunday offering or brought to the parish office. The names that you submit will then be published in our parish bulle n within one or two weeks (this is so we can gather all the names submi ed that will come in a er All Soul’s Day) and placed upon the altar during the month of November and throughout the year.

PERSISTENCE Today’s readings are about persistence, passionate persistence. Exodus tells of a battle won despite weariness because Moses, with help from Aaron and Hur, held his hands raised. Timothy asks that same persistence of his community and us. Luke tells of a court case won by a widow, despite the dishonesty of the judge, because she will not leave him alone. The psalm reminds us that God is everywhere, guarding us from harm day and night, coming and going, now and forever. The readings are about persistence, the relentless, unwavering pursuit of what must not be lost. The readings are about God’s passionate persistence in pursuing us, seeking to win our hearts. Prayer with Scripture We invite you to an encounter of prayer where you can stop from the hurry of the moment and listen to God through God’s Word, in silence, meditation, ad-oration and contemplation. In this short but intense time, we listen to a talk that introduces us into the understanding of the Word of God, which later, we reflect on and meditate in an attitude of faith, discov-ering what God is trying to reveal to us. The prayer is accompanied by the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament with songs to help the faithful enter more into prayer.

MEN’S RETREAT – SATURDAY, 10/26/19 WHY (AND HOW TO) BE CATHOLIC IN TODAY’S WORLD

Sponsored by Knights of Columbus – Maria Council #4836

The Knights of Columbus will host a one day retreat that will take place from 9 am to 3 pm on 10/26/19 at Our Lady of Hope (9711 W. Devon Avenue, Rosemont), and invite all men of St. Eugene and other area parishes to par cipate. Catholics. Who are we, what do we really believe, and why? Confirmed retreat speakers include: Fr. Bri o Berchmans (Pastor, St. Paul of the Cross), Fr. Wojciech Oleksy (Pastor, Our Lady of Hope), and Fr. Derek Ho (Associate Pastor, Mary Seat of Wisdom). In addi on to thought-provoking presenta ons by our speakers, the program will include Mass, the Rosary, Sta ons of the Cross, and Eucharis c Adora on. Coffee and pastries will be available in the morning, and lunch will be provided. A dona on of $25 is requested from those a endees who can afford to do so. A member of the SOCIAL CONCERNS MINISTRY (formerly St. Vincent de Paul) will get back to you.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the hours of daylight are rapidly dwindling, many people would say that these October days bring the year’s most splendid weather. Americans are riders and joggers, not strollers, and so the pleasures of the season are often lost on us. This is not the case with many Jewish people, who observe an ancient rule in walking to synagogue on the Sabbath. On city streets and suburban sidewalks in many cities, we may notice around sunset the nicely dressed families walking and chatting on Friday afternoon. After a short prayer at dusk, the families stroll home again for a relaxing and festive meal. They return to synagogue in the morning, and then spend an afternoon in family leisure until three stars appear in the night sky and Sabbath ends. Catholics, on the other hand, pile into the car and drive even a short distance to Mass; some even divide the family to participate at different hours. For Jews, the leisurely walk marks a dividing line between hectic life commitments and a day of abundant joy and enrichment. Before we became an automobile culture, Catholics embraced a similar pace, and in most places walked to church. These lovely days of fall invite us to tap into an old and life-giving tradition. If you live within a mile of your church, walk next week. If you must drive, park at a good distance and walk the rest of the way. Talk about your life, greet strangers, notice the crunch of leaves under your shoes. You may be surprised at how different Sunday Mass feels when it is framed by leisure! —James Field, Copyright © J. OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
