From the Pastor’s Desk…

ARE YOU CONSIDERING CREMATION FOR YOURSELF OR A LOVED ONE?

Some Things You Should Know….

For many years now we have been seeing more and more of our families choosing cremation over traditional burial. Sadly, though, this influx in choosing cremation has also been joined with a clear misunderstanding of what should happen with the cremated remains of your loved ones after the funeral. The Church has emphatically taught and upheld that the cremated remains are to be treated with the same dignity and respect as the body. For this reason, the cremated remains of our loved ones are required to be buried as the body would be buried immediately after the funeral. They are also to be buried in their entirety…not divided among family members, not made into keepsake jewelry for all in the family to wear, and not scattered on or near the deceased’s favorite fishing hole or vacation spot. We are talking here about the earthly remains of a human being. We would never consider keeping the arm or the leg of our mother or father or brother or sister in our dresser drawer or closet just because we wanted to hold on to a part of them. Would we? The same is true with regard to the parts of them that are now ashes. Please think about and reflect upon the wisdom of the Church here and also the dignity of the remains of the loved one who has passed when cremation is being chosen. Did you know that cremation has been an acceptable option for Catholics since 1963? At that time Canon Law was changed to accept cremation as long as it was not chosen for reasons which are contrary to Christian teaching. Since 1997, it has been permissible to bring the cremated remains of the body to the church for the funeral liturgy. It is preferred, however, that the casketed remains be present for the Funeral Liturgy. When this is not the reality, the urn may be brought to the church and placed in the same location where the casket would normally rest. The Catholic Church recommends that the actual cremation take place after the Wake Service and Funeral Liturgy. These services can be a very powerful way to worship, praise and give thanks for the gift of life which has now been returned to God. When the body is present, these services are a much more effective part of the grieving process helping us to say goodbye to someone we have loved. The Catholic Church also teaches that the cremated remains should be placed in a worthy vessel followed by interment in a Catholic Cemetery. Although Civil Law does allow cremated remains to be scattered in open or conserved areas other than a cemetery, this practice is not considered acceptable with the reverence that our faith requires. With cremation, you can choose to have the full body or the cremated remains of the body at the mass, or have the cremation take place prior to or after the Rite of Christian Burial. Each family is able to choose the options that is best suited for their needs and will honor the life of the departed in a faith-based tradition.

HOW DO WE TREAT THE MESSENGER? Let’s not be too hasty in defining who is “the wicked one” and who (namely us) is just! We are very quick to label others as evil, because we tend to label ourselves as good guys. We don’t like it when we are brought up short by a prophetic voice that brings us some bad news about our own behavior. We don’t like to be reproached for transgressions of the law or charged with violations of our training. We may condemn and abuse those who bring us up against these truths about ourselves when, if we were really good, we would thank them for helping to keep us on the right path. This is the way they treated the prophets and the way they treated Jesus. Is this also the way we treat those whose message we don’t like? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

For cremation interment or entombment; Cremation Graves, Regular Graves for Multiple Cremation Burials, Indoor and Outdoor Niches, Mosaic Niches, Glass Front Niches, and Columbariums are available at our Catholic Cemeteries. In addition, our Catholic Cemeteries are filled with exquisite architecture, sculptures, mosaics, and reliefs, and that reflect our Catholic faith tradition. These one-of-a-kind fine works of art create a lasting impression on the one-time visitor and an atmosphere of tranquil meditation for our frequent visitors. Placing the cremated remains in a Catholic Cemetery provides a dignified setting for visitation, prayer, and remembrance. I hope this information is helpful to all in our parish. As members of the Catholic Church, we place great emphasis on the dignity and respect of the human person in both life and in death. Please save this article as it may come in handy one day when the issues contained within will definitely become a topic for discussion when your loved one passes away. Hopefully with this knowledge, you will make the choices that are in keeping with our Church’s long standing tradition.

I’ve written this bulletin article at this time because the topic of cremation has come up a few times over the past couple of months from some of our parishioners and I thought this information might be beneficial to you. Hopefully, it gives deeper meaning to some of your questions.

5TH SUNDAY ROSARY Next Sunday, September 30 Church Our nation and the world are experiencing a growing moral breakdown that causes assaults on our core rights, restrictions on our religious beliefs, disdain for life, elimination of GOD from our society, and threatens the collapse of world order. We pray the rosary to Our Lady as she requested, to heal our nation, to ask for peace, to turn our people back to GOD and to offer reparation and penance for our sins. The Knights of Columbus invite all parishioners and their families to pray the rosary with us every time a 5th Sunday occurs during a month. The 5th Sunday Rosary service will be conducted on September 30, immediately following the 11:30 AM Mass. Please join us to pray for peace and guidance.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION How long have there been parochial schools in the United States? Longer than you may imagine. The Jesuit fathers opened Saint Mary School in Philadelphia in 1782 in the first light of independence. Catholic and Protestant squabbles about the nature of education forced the Fathers to make this risky and innovative venture in the heart of the city. The school was closed by a devastating fire in 1902, but reopened in 1968 as St. Mary Interparochial School, the first example of a shared parochial school. It is also the only Catholic school within the confines of a national park. This is the “Mother School” of this uniquely American institution. Many parochial schools, especially in “national parishes,” were established to preserve the culture and language of the “old country,” and also to protect young people from prejudice. In other countries, Ireland for one, the Church is authorized to run national schools, sometimes under the sponsorship of a parish. In still other places, such as Quebec, publicly-funded “separate schools” were administered by the Church. Wherever the state funds Catholic schools, normally enrollment is guaranteed to all applicants. The Quebec system was dismantled in 1998 when the state decided to reorganize schools along linguistic lines rather than religious affiliation. Parochial schools require considerable sacrifice, but they endure as a distinctive treasure of the Church in the United States. Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

We ask all of our parishioners, if you have a loved one serving in the military,

to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, so the

whole parish can pray for your loved one. A book in the church vestibule is

available for inscribing the names of all military personnel. This book will be part of the offertory

procession from now until the war is over.

A PRAYER L , . P . B . W J L S . A

We pray for our loved ones

who are serving in any branch of the Armed Forces during this time of conflict.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
