From the Pastor’s Desk… It’s hard to believe that the new school year is beginning this coming Thursday.
It’s been an unprecedented past few months hasn’t it? This past week, Chicago
Public Schools (CPS) announced that they have chosen to conduct classes via full-
time remote learning for the first 10 weeks of the fall.
The Archdiocese of Chicago believes strongly that our reopening plan, which provides for full-time in-person learning, is in the best interests of our children and our mission. Dr. Jim Rigg, Superintendent of Catholic Schools of the Archdiocese of Chicago, believes that in-person learning is essential for the intellectual, emo-tional, physical and spiritual growth of our students. Our reopening plan maximizes the safety of our students and employees while allowing the resumption of in-person learning. Therefore, our schools will remain com-mitted to offer five-day, in-person learning in addition to a remote, e-learning, option for those students who are unable or whose parents are unwilling to return to classrooms. Dr. Rigg explained that in designing our reopening plan, we consulted guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as input on safely reopening and important mitigation efforts from the Chica-go Department of Public Health (CDPH), state health officials and infectious disease experts on our own task force. CDPH has recognized that our school system is different from CPS and supports our specific plan to re-open. If this guidance were to change, we would adjust our plan accordingly. We have worked hard to implement health and safety requirements ahead of the start of the year. We are also preparing a virtual learning option with support from the Archdiocese. We celebrate the start of a new school year and welcome back all of our returning student families as well as those newly joining us.
*************** Congratulations to Verbum Dei Sister Milagros Chaparro, who just celebrated her 25th Anniversary! Sr. Milag-ros has devoted her religious ministry to working with Latino married couples, Hispanic young adults, and di-recting spiritual retreats, prayer groups and leadership programs. She has also served as a campus minister at Wright College, is currently an evangelization coordinator for the archdiocese’s Office of Evangelization and Missionary Discipleship and continues her Verbum Dei Hispanic Ministry. On behalf of our entire parish com-munity, we wish her much happiness and continued success and fulfillment as she serves God through those she ministers to. Happy 25th Sr. Milagros!

We just received word that the Golden Anniversary Mass that was scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2020, will need to be cancelled to ensure the health and safety of all involved during this COVID-19 pandem-ic. Know that the Archdiocese truly regrets the cancellation of this celebration, as the commitment of 50 years of marriage is not only a significant and heartfelt milestone for couples and their families, but also for us as a Church. While it will not be possible for an in-person celebration this year, the deep need to honor our jubilarians in their commitment to the Sacrament of Marriage cannot be overlooked. For this reason, all those couples who are celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2020 are asked to fill out the following information and send it to or drop it off at the parish office and we will forward it to the Archdiocese. Wife First Name: __________________________ Wife Last Name: ___________________________ Husband First Name: _____________________________ Husband Last Name: ______________________________ Date of Wedding: ______________________________ Email address: _______________________________________________ Mailing address: ________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________ Phone Number: ________________________________ Please select your preferred language for your certificate: ___English ___Spanish ___Polish Cardinal Cupich will be recording a video of congratulations that will be distributed to the Jubilarians via email. In addition, the Office of Lifelong Formation will issue a certificate in honor of your 50th Wedding Anni-versary which will be sent to your home. It is the hope of the Archdiocese to be able to celebrate the 2020 jubilarians during the 2021 Golden Wed-ding Mass. More information on this celebration will be provided as it becomes available. Congratulations to all our Golden Jubilarians! Have a blessed week ahead everyone!

WHY PRAY? The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gen les” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Ma hew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The ques on is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of rela ng to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our rela onship with him must be enthusias c; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fi eenth-century poet, knew what the quali es of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Chris ans. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Ma hew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

To our Pastor Rev. Richard Yanos
August 21 May God Bless You on your birthday!
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In recent weeks, we have looked at the evolu on of how Roman Catholics ini ate children into the life of the Church. How did customs evolve in the Eastern Church? At one me, Chris ans in both East and West preferred to celebrate bap sm in a community se ng, with large numbers of adults and children ini ated at Easter. The two branches of Chris anity began to split on the proper me to do this. In the East, water was blessed in abundance on the feast of the Epiphany, which marked, among other things, the bap sm of the Lord. Once infant bap sm was fixed on that day, local customs marking a birth began to evolve. One celebra on was the giving of a name on the eighth day, another was the “purifica on” of the mother on the for eth day a er birth. In that blessing, re-enac ng Mary and Joseph’s journey to the temple, the priest took the baby in his arms and placed the child before the altar. Just as Simeon received the child Jesus, so the priest received the new Chris an while chan ng Simeon’s prayer. Later, normally on Epiphany, the priest would bap ze, chrismate (confirm), and give a few drops of the Precious Blood to the child in a joyous celebra on of the whole community. Rev. SAINT PIUS X (1835-1914) August 21 Presiden al vetoes we understand. But imagine vetoing a papal elec on! Yet in the conclave of 1903, the Archbishop of Cracow (ironically, a predecessor in that office of Karol Wojtyla, the future John Paul II) vetoed the leading candidate on the order of the Austro-Hungarian emperor. Instead, the cardinals elected Giuseppe Sarto of Venice as Pius X, the first pope, a er a succession of nobles and diplomats, to hail from humble origins. Nor did the papacy alter his endearing simplicity. Tailors eventually made his cassock cuffs detachable because he absentmindedly wiped his fountain pen on them, forge ng that his old black cassock had been replaced by papal white! Taking as his mo o “To restore all things in Christ” (Ephesians 1:10), Pius condemned the theological innova ons called “modernism,” yet drama cally altered the then-common prac ce whereby people rarely received Communion for fear of unworthiness, manda ng early First Communion and urging everyone to frequent recep on. Refusing to bless troops assembled in Saint Peter’s Square—“I bless peace, not war!”—he died brokenhearted as World War I engulfed Chris an Europe despite his peacemaking efforts. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. OUR MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission as Catholics united in faith at St. Eugene Parish is to help bring God to people and people to God. Through evangelization, education and being of service to each other, we strive to make our parish community a holistic community in body, mind and spirit. It is our goal to develop, support, encourage and empower one another in our parish ministries, so that each person can reach their human and Christian po-tential. We are enthused about the future of St. Eugene and the whole Catholic Church and we pledge our participation in that future. We seek dialogue and open communication with all parishioners in fulfilling the needs of our parish. While recognizing the cultural diversities in our community, we will strive to bring all people together in Christ under a common bond of faith, hope and love.
