The patient rooms embrace a patient-centered care philosophy. All rooms provide the option to bring specialized care directly to each patient and their unique diagnosis.

The healthcare campus at the new 410,000-square-foot, 150-bed

St. Elizabeth Regional Hospital - East unite to create a comforting

and welcoming facility that reflects Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health’s

commitment to quality care. The new St. Elizabeth East is a culmination

of years of listening, watching and learning from interactions with

patients and staff that resulted in a community hospital uniquely

designed for the citizens of Lafayette, Indiana.

St. Elizabeth East was designed to utilize the flow of services and

maintenance found at theme parks. The concept known as “front of

house” and “back of house” reinforces St. Elizabeth’s patient-centered

care and serves as an innovative facility layout. “Front of house”

refers to the paths of travel that the public traverses in quiet and open

corridors, each with its own set of original artwork. The “back of house”

layout encompasses staff and patients only corridors and elevators to

provide maximum patient privacy.

One quarter of the 150 private patient rooms are part of the Women’s Center

LDRP rooms. A separate entrance and unequaled privacy greets mothers-to-be

as they spend the entire birthing process in the same private suite. These private

rooms, coupled with modern amenities like wireless capabilities and sleeping

accommodations for family, help create an experience for patients that focuses

on accessibility and comfort.

a program that reflects care mission

At the core of St. Elizabeth East is the Heart Center, composed of cardiology,

cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, open-heart surgery and thoracic and

vascular surgery. The inpatient units feature the concept of “acuity adaptable

rooms”, giving all rooms the capability of providing the highest level of care and

the option to bring specialized care directly to each patient and their unique

diagnosis.

The pin-wheel design allows the most efficient medical care, delivered in team-

based units of physicians, nurses and medical staff to reduce walking distances.

Further efficiency is brought to the campus through creation of separate

entrances for patients of the Heart Center, Women’s Center and Outpatient

Center that conveniently guide patients to their destination.

Emphasizing a tranquil environment, the design uses a “back of house” approach

through a central core design with access to corridors and elevators exclusive to

staff in order to reduce noise to the patients. For patients and families, “front of

house” is embodied by quiet circulation routes surrounded by artwork and outside

views for wayfinding through colors that differentiate floor levels and functions.

Pass-through nurse servers allow supplies and linens to be close at hand. The

design permits patient room supply cabinets to be restocked from the outside

corridor without disrupting patients or creating noise.

Site and landscape design play an active part of in the St. Elizabeth East healing environment.

Situated on a 63 acre site with public frontage along a rapidly developing thoroughfare, the site is designed

to provide therapeutic value from the moment patients, family and staff arrives. A water feature is positioned

between the campus and the major roadway to create a transitional buffer to the hospital. LifeStructures

Metrics® were used to benchmark the ideal placement of parking, pedestrian drop-offs and other interactive

areas on the site. Public entry and wayfinding is accentuated by a design that provides parking within 300

feet of any hospital entry or drop-off.

Strategic placement of landscaped courtyards, gardens and meditative walks as well as the materials,

textures, and colors allow users to interact and take advantage of a complete healing environment

experience. The courtyard, color scheme and custom artwork are designed around the theme of Indiana’s

rural landscapes. Public corridors, the chapel, pediatrics and imaging are strategically placed around the

interior courtyard to connect to the exterior environment and nature.

Staff accommodations feature team-based units that allow nurses,

physicians and medical staff the opportunity to plan and implement work

procedures in an efficient process that caters to the strategic layout of

the facility. Areas for consultation and lab work are strategically located

so those services are close to the patients that need them.

The building flows around an interior courtyard that not only serves as a

calming influence on staff and patients, but also serves as a marker for

wayfinding through the 410,000 square foot facility.
