TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Algunos expertos han comentantado que los lati-

nos y las latinas somos muy atraídos por movimientos

carismáticos o pentecostales. Esto puede ser debido a

los misioneros franciscanos que fundaron la Iglesia en

América durante el siglo XVI. Probablemente sin co-

nocer su origen estos llegaron con ideas milenaristas

de un abad cisterciense llamado Joaquín de Fiore. Este

monje había profetizado que estaba por llegar una épo-

ca del Espíritu Santo en la cual se viviría por fin una

utopía o sea el Reino de Dios. Muchos de los primeros

franciscanos adoptaron sus ideas pero lamentablemen-

te el joaquinismo, poco a poco, se transformó en here-

jía por su extremada crítica a los Sacramentos y la je-

rarquía.

Al pasar de casi 3 siglos los frailes franciscanos

que llegaron a nuestro continente vinieron con la idea

de inaugurar la Iglesia del Espíritu Santo, la cual refor-

maría los errores y las debilidades de la vieja Iglesia

Europea. Esta Iglesia también sería la que defendería

al nativo y el mestizo de los abusos del Conquistador.

Este sueño de utopía, se quedó en sueño pero, es un

sueño que continua en el pueblo latino y su devoción

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The disciples gathered on the fiftieth day after the

Resurrection were not keeping their first Pentecost. For

them, Pentecost was the fiftieth day after Passover, a feast

of the first fruits of the harvest. It was the second most

important feast of the year. Today, Jews gather on the eve

of the feast to study scripture and the law, and after the

feast begins at sundown, spend the day in joyful social

gatherings. The meaning of the celebration is the giving of

the law on Mount Sinai, so for Christians the connection

to the gifts of the Holy Spirit is obvious. In Sicily and in

the Pantheon in Rome, today the descent of the Holy Spir-

it is enacted with a stunning ritual. Some churches there

have an “eye” in the roof open to the sky, called an oculus.

After the Gospel today, thousands of rose petals fall from

the oculus onto the assembly. Churches and homes are

decked in greenery and flowers to express the new life the

From the Pastor (Humane Vitae continues) Seeking True Solutions We are fully aware of the difficulties

confronting the public authorities in this matter, especially in

the developing countries. In fact, We had in mind the justifiable

anxieties which weigh upon them when We published Our en-

cyclical letter Populorum Progressio. But now We join Our

voice to that of Our predecessor John XXIII of venerable

memory, and We make Our own his words: "No statement of

the problem and no solution to it is acceptable which does vio-

lence to man's essential dignity; those who propose such solu-

tions base them on an utterly materialistic conception of man

himself and his life. The only possible solution to this question

is one which envisages the social and economic progress both of

individuals and of the whole of human society, and which re-

spects and promotes true human values." (26) No one can, with-

out being grossly unfair, make divine Providence responsible

for what clearly seems to be the result of misguided governmen-

tal policies, of an insufficient sense of social justice, of a selfish

accumulation of material goods, and finally of a culpable failure

to undertake those initiatives and responsibilities which would

raise the standard of living of peoples and their children. (27) If

only all governments which were able would do what some are

already doing so nobly, and bestir themselves to renew their

efforts and their undertakings! There must be no relaxation in

the programs of mutual aid between all the branches of the great

human family. Here We believe an almost limitless field lies

open for the activities of the great international institutions. To

and also peace of conscience, if by pooling their efforts they

strive to elucidate more thoroughly the conditions favorable to a

And now We turn in a special way to Our own sons and daugh-

ters, to those most of all whom God calls to serve Him in the

state of marriage. While the Church does indeed hand on to her

children the inviolable conditions laid down by God's law, she

is also the herald of salvation and through the sacraments she

flings wide open the channels of grace through which man is

made a new creature responding in charity and true freedom to

the design of his Creator and Savior, experiencing too the

sweetness of the yoke of Christ. (31) In humble obedience then

to her voice, let Christian husbands and wives be mindful of

their vocation to the Christian life, a vocation which, deriving

from their Baptism, has been confirmed anew and made more

explicit by the Sacrament of Matrimony. For by this sacrament

they are strengthened and, one might almost say, consecrated to

the faithful fulfillment of their duties. Thus will they realize to

the full their calling and bear witness as becomes them, to

Christ before the world. (32) For the Lord has entrusted to them

the task of making visible to men and women the holiness and

joy of the law which united inseparably their love for one anoth-

er and the cooperation they give to God's love, God who is the

Author of human life. We have no wish at all to pass over in

silence the difficulties, at times very great, which beset the lives

los poderes públicos a este respecto, especialmente en los pue-

blos en vía de desarrollo. A sus legítimas preocupaciones hemos

dedicado nuestra encíclica Populorum Progressio. Y con nues-

des no se superan con el recurso a métodos y medios que son

probable en afrontar los esfuerzos y sacrificios necesarios para

asegurar la elevación del nivel de vida de un pueblo y de todos

sus hijos [27]. Que todos los Poderes responsables —como ya

algunos lo vienen haciendo laudablemente— reaviven generosa-

mente los propios esfuerzos, y que no cese de extenderse el mu-

tuo apoyo entre todos los miembros de la familia humana: es un

campo inmenso el que se abre de este modo a la actividad de las

grandes organizaciones internacionales. A los hombres de cien-

Nuestra palabra se dirige ahora más directamente a nuestros

hijos, en particular a los llamados por Dios a servirlo en el ma-

trimonio. La Iglesia, al mismo tiempo que enseña las exigencias

imprescriptibles de la ley divina, anuncia la salvación y abre con

los sacramentos los caminos de la gracia, la cual hace del hom-

bre una nueva criatura, capaz de corresponder en el amor y en la

verdadera libertad al designio de su Creador y Salvador, y de

encontrar suave el yugo de Cristo [31]. Los esposos cristianos,

pues, dóciles a su voz, deben recordar que su vocación cristiana,

iniciada en el bautismo, se ha especificado y fortalecido ulterior-

mente con el sacramento del matrimonio. Por lo mismo los cón-

yuges son corroborados y como consagrados para cumplir fiel-

mente los propios deberes, para realizar su vocación hasta la

perfección y para dar un testimonio, propio de ellos, delante del

mundo [32]. A ellos ha confiado el Señor la misión de hacer

visible ante los hombres la santidad y la suavidad de la ley que

une el amor mutuo de los esposos con su cooperación al amor

de Dios, autor de la vida humana. No es nuestra intención ocul-

tar las dificultades, a veces graves, inherentes a la vida de los

cónyuges cristianos; para ellos como para todos "la puerta es

estrecha y angosta la senda que lleva a la vida" [33]. La esperan-

za de esta vida debe iluminar su camino, mientras se esfuerzan

animosamente por vivir con prudencia, justicia y piedad en el
