Queridos Parroquianos, «Uno solo es el Bueno» (Mt 19, 17) 9. Jesús dice: «¿Por qué me preguntas acerca de lo bue-no? Uno solo es el Bueno. Mas si quieres entrar en la vida, guarda los mandamientos» (Mt 19, 17). En las ver-siones de los evangelistas Marcos y Lucas la pregunta es formulada así: «¿Por qué me llamas bueno? Nadie es bue-no sino sólo Dios» (Mc 10, 18; cf. Lc 18, 19). Antes de responder a la pregunta, Jesús quiere que el joven se aclare a sí mismo el motivo por el que lo inter-pela. El «Maestro bueno» indica a su interlocutor —y a todos nosotros— que la respuesta a la pregunta, «¿qué he de hacer de bueno para conseguir la vida eterna?», sólo puede encontrarse dirigiendo la mente y el corazón al úni-co que es Bueno: «Nadie es bueno sino sólo Di-os» (Mc 10, 18; cf. Lc 18, 19). Sólo Dios puede respond-er a la pregunta sobre el bien, porque él es el Bien. En efecto, interrogarse sobre el bien significa, en último término, dirigirse a Dios, que es plenitud de la bondad. Jesús muestra que la pregunta del joven es, en realidad, una pregunta religiosa y que la bondad, que atrae y al mismo tiempo vincula al hombre, tiene su fuente en Dios, más aún, es Dios mismo: el Único que es digno de ser amado «con todo el corazón, con toda el alma y con toda la mente» (cf. Mt 22, 37), Aquel que es la fuente de la felicidad del hombre. Jesús relaciona la cuestión de la acción moralmente buena con sus raíces religiosas, con el reconocimiento de Dios, úni-ca bondad, plenitud de la vida, término último del obrar humano, felicidad perfecta. 10. La Iglesia, iluminada por las palabras del Maestro, cree que el hombre, hecho a imagen del Creador, redi-mido con la sangre de Cristo y santificado por la presen-cia del Espíritu Santo, tiene como fin último de su vida ser «alabanza de la gloria» de Dios (cf. Ef 1, 12), haciendo así que cada una de sus acciones refleje su es-plendor. «Conócete a ti misma, alma hermosa: tú eres la imagen de Dios —escribe san Ambrosio—. Conócete a ti mismo, hombre: tú eres la gloria de Dios (1 Co 11, 7). Escucha de qué modo eres su gloria. Dice el profeta: Tu ciencia es misteriosa para mí (Sal 138, 6), es decir: tu majestad es más admirable en mi obra, tu sabiduría es exaltada en la mente del hombre. Mientras me considero a mí mismo, a quien tú escrutas en los secretos pensam-ientos y en los sentimientos íntimos, reconozco los mis-terios de tu ciencia. Por tanto, conócete a ti mismo, hom-bre, lo grande que eres y vigila sobre ti...» 17. Aquello que es el hombre y lo que debe hacer se manifies-ta en el momento en el cual Dios se revela a sí mismo. En efecto, el Decálogo se fundamenta sobre estas palabras:

Dear Parishioners,

"There is only one who is good" (Mt 19:17) 9. Jesus says: "Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments" (Mt 19:17). In the versions of the Evangelists Mark and Luke the question is phrased in this way: "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone" (Mk 10:18; cf. Lk 18:19). Before answering the question, Jesus wishes the young man to have a clear idea of why he asked his question. The "Good Teacher" points out to him — and to all of us — that the answer to the question, "What good must I do to have eternal life?" can only be found by turning one's mind and heart to the "One" who is good: "No one is good but God alone" (Mk 10:18; cf. Lk 18:19). Only God can answer the question about what is good, because he is the Good itself. To ask about the good, in fact, ultimately means to turn towards God, the fullness of goodness. Jesus shows that the young man's question is really a religious ques-tion, and that the goodness that attracts and at the same time obliges man has its source in God, and indeed is God himself. God alone is worthy of being loved "with all one's heart, and with all one's soul, and with all one's mind" (Mt 22:37). He is the source of man's happiness. Jesus brings the question about morally good action back to its religious foundations, to the acknowledgment of God, who alone is goodness, fullness of life, the final end of human activity, and perfect happiness. 10. The Church, instructed by the Teacher's words, be-lieves that man, made in the image of the Creator, re-deemed by the Blood of Christ and made holy by the pres-ence of the Holy Spirit, has as the ultimate purpose of his life to live "for the praise of God's glory" (cf. Eph 1:12), striving to make each of his actions reflect the splendour of that glory. "Know, then, O beautiful soul, that you are the image of God", writes Saint Ambrose. "Know that you are the glory of God (1 Cor 11:7). Hear how you are his glory. The Prophet says: Your knowledge has become too wonderful for me (cf. Ps. 138:6, Vulg.). That is to say, in my work your majesty has become more wonderful; in the counsels of men your wisdom is exalted. When I con-sider myself, such as I am known to you in my secret thoughts and deepest emotions, the mysteries of your knowledge are disclosed to me. Know then, O man, your greatness, and be vigilant".17 What man is and what he must do becomes clear as soon as God reveals himself. The Decalogue is based on these words: "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage" (Ex 20:2-

In the "ten words" of the Covenant with Israel, and in the whole Law, God makes himself known and acknowledged as the One who "alone is good"; the One who despite man's sin remains the "model" for moral action, in accordance with his command, "You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy" (Lev 19:2); as the One who, faithful to his love for man, gives him his Law (cf. Ex 19:9-24 and 20:18-21) in order to restore man's original and peaceful harmony with the Creator and with all creation, and, what is more, to draw him into his divine love: "I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people" (Lev 26:12). The moral life presents itself as the response due to the many gratuitous initiatives taken by God out of love for man. It is a response of love, according to the statement made in Deuteronomy about the fundamental command-ment: "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. And these words which I command you this day shall be upon your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your chil-dren" (Dt 6:4-7). Thus the moral life, caught up in the gratuitousness of God's love, is called to reflect his glory: "For the one who loves God it is enough to be pleasing to the One whom he loves: for no greater reward should be sought than that love itself; charity in fact is of God in such a way that God himself is charity".18

The statement that "There is only one who is good" thus brings us back to the "first tablet" of the command-ments, which calls us to acknowledge God as the one Lord of all and to worship him alone for his infinite holi-ness (cf. Ex 20:2-11). The good is belonging to God, obeying him, walking humbly with him in doing justice and in loving kindness (cf.Mic 6:8). Acknowledging the Lord as God is the very core, the heart of the Law, from which the particular precepts flow and towards which they are ordered. In the morality of the commandments the fact that the people of Israel belongs to the Lord is made evident, because God alone is the One who is good. Such is the witness of Sacred Scripture, imbued in every one of its pages with a lively perception of God's absolute holiness: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts" (Is 6:3). But if God alone is the Good, no human effort, not even the most rigorous observance of the commandments, suc-ceeds in "fulfilling" the Law, that is, acknowledging the Lord as God and rendering him the worship due to him alone (cf. Mt 4:10). This "fulfilment" can come only from a gift of God: the offer of a share in the divine Goodness revealed and communicated in Jesus, the one whom the rich young man addresses with the words "Good Teach-er" (Mk 10:17; Lk 18:18). What the young man now per-haps only dimly perceives will in the end be fully re-vealed by Jesus himself in the invitation: "Come, follow me" (Mt 19:21).

...estas palabras: «Yo soy el Señor, tu Dios, que te he sa-cado del país de Egipto, de la casa de servidumbre. No habrá para ti otros dioses delante de mí» (Ex 20, 2-3). En las «diez palabras» de la Alianza con Israel, y en toda la Ley, Dios se hace conocer y reconocer como el único que es «Bueno»; como aquel que, a pesar del pecado del hom-bre, continúa siendo el modelo del obrar moral, según su misma llamada: «Sed santos, porque yo, el Señor, vuestro Dios, soy santo» (Lv 19, 2); como Aquel que, fiel a su amor por el hombre, le da su Ley (cf. Ex 19, 9-24; 20, 18-21) para restablecer la armonía originaria con el Creador y todo lo creado, y aún más, para introducirlo en su amor: «Caminaré en medio de vosotros, y seré vuestro Dios, y vosotros seréis mi pueblo» (Lv 26, 12). La vida moral se presenta como la respuesta debida a las iniciativas gratuitas que el amor de Dios multiplica en fa-vor del hombre. Es una respuesta de amor, según el enun-ciado del mandamiento fundamental que hace el Deuteronomio: «Escucha, Israel: el Señor es nuestro Dios, el Señor es uno solo. Amarás al Señor tu Dios con todo tu corazón, con toda tu alma y con toda tu fuerza. Queden en tu corazón estos preceptos que yo te dicto hoy. Se los repetirás a tus hijos» (Dt 6, 4-7). Así, la vida moral, inmersa en la gratuidad del amor de Dios, está llamada a reflejar su gloria: «Para quien ama a Dios es suficiente agradar a Aquel que él ama, ya que no debe buscarse ninguna otra recompensa mayor al mismo amor; en efecto, la caridad proviene de Dios de tal manera que Dios mismo es caridad» 18. 11. La afirmación de que «uno solo es el Bueno» nos re-mite así a la «primera tabla» de los mandamientos, que exige reconocer a Dios como Señor único y absoluto, y a darle culto solamente a él porque es infinitamente santo (cf. Ex 20, 2-11). El bien es pertenecer a Dios, obedecerle, caminar humildemente con él practicando la justicia y amando la piedad (cf. Mi 6, 8).Reconocer al Se-ñor como Dios es el núcleo fundamental, el corazón de la Ley, del que derivan y al que se ordenan los preceptos par-ticulares. Mediante la moral de los mandamientos se man-ifiesta la pertenencia del pueblo de Israel al Señor, porque sólo Dios es aquel que es «Bueno». Éste es el testimonio de la sagrada Escritura, cuyas páginas están penetradas por la viva percepción de la absoluta santidad de Dios: «Santo, santo, santo, Señor de los ejércitos» (Is 6, 3). Pero si Dios es el Bien, ningún esfuerzo humano, ni si-quiera la observancia más rigurosa de los mandamientos, logra cumplir la Ley, es decir, reconocer al Señor como Dios y tributarle la adoración que a él solo es debida (cf. Mt 4, 10). El «cumplimiento» puede lograrse sólo co-mo un don de Dios: es el ofrecimiento de una partici-pación en la bondad divina que se revela y se comunica en Jesús, aquel a quien el joven rico llama con las palabras «Maestro bueno» (Mc 10, 17; Lc 18, 18). Lo que quizás en ese momento el joven logra solamente intuir será ple-namente revelado al final por Jesús mismo con la invi-tación «ven, y sígueme» (Mt 19, 21). (Veritatis Splendor #4, continues)
