The gift of Church Attendance Unfortunately, many of us see church attendance as an obligation and a troublesome duty, rather than as a gift. We need to be mindful of the fact that living in a society of many temptations and countless mixed messages, we badly need the encouragement of one another to help us become and remain strong Chris-tians. It is only by supporting one another that we are able to avoid distraction, remain focused, and order our priorities rightly. That is why St. Paul writes “Let us not give up the habit of meeting together . . . but let us en-courage one another all the more.” (Heb. 10:25). In visiting the shut-ins of our parish, I am struck by the fact that they who can no longer attend church because of physical limitation, appreciate this gift more than any others. Remarkably, however, their deprivation does not cause their faith to cool or their enthusiasm to wane. They eagerly wait for the sacraments of the Church to be brought to them, and many request and listen to the tapes of the Bible study classes, Sunday sermons, and daily meditations we make available to them. Their forced confinement is not marked by a decline in faith, but in a deepening of their spiritual lives. What a lesson they provide for us! For those who attend church, they are a reminder that our pres-ence at worship is not the fulfillment of a responsibility but the receipt of a gift and an opportunity
for respite and renewal. For those others of us, all other superficial excuses aside, who are unable to attend worship because of illness, the limitations of age, the special responsibilities of our livelihood, or any other legitimate reason, these deeply spiritual people encourage us not to feel forgotten and not to allow indifference to undermine our faith. We are all a part of the church even when for good reason we cannot attend. Like the shut-ins, we too can pray for the church, for its ministry, its needs and its people. At the same time, those of us who are not limited must take the church to those who cannot attend. We must visit them regularly, bring them an-tidoron, and be God’s presence in their lives. In this
way we “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” (Gal. 6:2)

It is the custom of Orthodox Christians throughout the world to have their homes
blessed during the THEOPHANY season with Holy water. When the parish priest
comes to bless a home, he asks the Lord “to keep safe from all harm those who
dwell in the house, bestowing on them His blessing, purification and bodily health,
and granting all the petitions which are for the salvation and eternal life”.

ST. ELIAS THE PROPHET GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH
January 24 , 2017
Dear St. Elias Family,
Happy New Year to all! We have a very exciting year ahead of us. Our beautiful new narthex is almost finished and
our lovely church is to be consecrated on Labor Day weekend 2017. Many people have asked why we have a nar-
thex. The narthex of an orthodox church is the connection between the church and the outside world. In our narthex
we will have space for the bulletins, candles, liturgy books, and icons to be venerated before entering the nave (the
main body of the church). The glass doors of the narthex provide entry to the nave and are mostly closed in order to
prevent distractions during services. Please light your candles, venerate icons, and get your bulletins in the narthex
so that you are prepared to enter the nave quietly and reverently. Our ushers will assist you at both outside and in-
side doors and will assist our visitors as well. Our goal is to provide less distraction and movement during services
so as not to disturb our priest and those present in the church who are there to worship and pray in a peaceful and
reverent way.
There are certain times during the service when movement is not permitted. During these times our ushers will indi-
cate that you must remain in the narthex until it is proper for you to enter and go to your seat. Please understand that
this request for no moving about is to show the proper respect and reverence for what is happening during certain
times of the service; (ie: the Gospel Reading, the Consecration of the Holy Gifts, Father Censing, etc.). It is distract-
ing to the priest to have groups of people gathered at the back of the church so please take your place quickly and
quietly at the correct time.
The consecration of our church is a huge undertaking and many steps are required to fulfill all our obligations and
requirements for this event. The Metropolis of Denver has an outline we must follow to the letter. We ask that you
fill out the enclosed form indicating where you could best help in this endeavor. We want everyone to assist in the
preparation of our church's baptism. We welcome any and all ideas. Please feel free to contact the consecration
committee with your suggestions. Father Dimitri Pappas has made a generous donation to our church of items for
the consecration and the narthex. Enclosed is a separate form for those who wish to purchase items for the consecra-
tion as well. Your participation is greatly appreciated and together we can make our consecration a memorable
event for all those who love and cherish our beautiful church.
In Christ,
Fr. Dimitri Pappas April Dellas
