FROM THE PASTOR

BREAD OF L IFE , PART II

“HEY, I’M UP HERE!” I am told that attractive women sometimes feel inclined to advise men who leer at their features below the neck, “Hey, I’m up here!” They aim to have the men see them face-to-face, eye-to-eye, and so be regarded as persons rather than objects of sexual entertainment.

Jesus attempts something similar in this Sunday’s second selection from John 6, the “Bread of Life” discourse. The crowds, having witnessed the miraculous feeding of the five thousand, chase him around the shore of Lake Galilee, looking for more food or more miracles.

Jesus, however, grows frustrated: They should not seek food for a day, but food for eternity. They should not think Jesus imitates Moses’ wonderworking, but that Jesus surpasses it. “I myself am the bread of life.”

Consider how we make the same mistake at Mass. “Does the music inspire me? Is the preacher funny? Warm? Nice? Will my friends be at Mass?” Perhaps we choose not to attend if the answers are negative. We thus judge the Mass according to vulgar criteria. Jesus responds, “Hey, I’m up here! You’re looking at lower things. I want you to be looking at me.”

When you’re at Mass, fix your thoughts on Jesus. During hymns, sing as if you are rehearsing for Heaven—and Jesus is watching. During the homily, listen for what Jesus wants you to hear. When you exchange the sign of peace, don’t just wave or “greet your neighbor,” but soberly and solemnly consider how Jesus has brought the two of you together, in preparation for eternity.

Before or after Mass, you have plenty of opportunity to greet each other, to check in on your neighbors, to chat. At Mass, keep your mind on higher things—on the Lord Jesus sharing his eternal life with you.

Our annual mission co-operative appeal takes place this Sunday, August 2. Sister Ellen Anderson of the Missionary Sisters of the Holy Rosary (MSHR) speaks after Communion at each of the Masses. Then we’ll take up a collection for the MSHR—not at the usual time for second collections, but instead after Sister speaks.

The MSHR work in Africa and Latin America. They are dedicated to women’s education, health, community development, nutrition, “justice and peace issues,” and parish ministries.

—Fr. Dave

“In John’s Gospel, Mary Magdalene encounters the risen Jesus outside the tomb and he tells her, ‘don’t cling to me, go tell my apostles...Instead of clinging to our faith, we need to go out and proclaim that he is alive!” ~ Dr. Michel Therrien, Diocesan Secretary for Evangelization and Catholic Education in the Diocese of Pittsburgh

“Our faith is meant to be lived…because not only is it our ticket for getting in to heaven, but it is an integral part of the responsibility we have to help others get there as well.” ~ Bishop David Zubik

FOR PARENTS The “Take a Hike” event on Sunday, August 9 involves pizza at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Church (730 Washington Ave. in Carnegie) followed by an afternoon of walking and games at Settlers Cabin Park. It is open to youth from SEAS and from Holy Trinity. We will leave after Mass ends at 12:30, go to Holy Trinity for pizza, then to Settlers Cabin from there. SEAS youth will return to SEAS by 4:00. We will need to know beforehand how many youth will be coming, in order to arrange details. Parent/guardian consent forms are required for all who participate. Transportation from SEAS will be provided by the youth leadership team. We must have a contact number for all parents/guardians, in case details of the event change due to weather or timing issues. (In the event of rain, we will remain at Holy Trinity and conclude the event at an earlier time.) Youth should dress for an afternoon of walking and games, and should be prepared to spend several hours outdoors. Please contact Steve at 412-276-1011 ext. 217, or [email protected] with further questions.

ADVERTISE HERE! Now is the best time to buy a bulletin advertisement! If your company is interested in advertising with us, please contact Mary Kay for more information: [email protected]
