ENVIRONMENT MATTERS

I sit, writing this, in a T-shirt! The outside thermometer reads 16 degrees Celsius. It feels more like a warm April, or even an early June, than February. On the day of writing the news reported a gorse fire on Arthur’s seat in Edinburgh, and moorland fires on the Yorkshire moors and in Wales – scenes rather too reminiscent of last summer. But this time last year many events were cancelled or postponed due to heavy snowfall.

Even if you are sceptical about some of the claims made by climate change pressure groups and what we need to do to avert an environmental Armageddon it is hard to deny that our weather is even more unpredictable than it usually is. But changes in the weather – global warming – is but one aspect of a wide range of environmental issues that are currently in the spotlight. The popularity of Veganuary – the Vegan Society’s push to encourage people to try veganism for a month – is well noted and much of their publicity emphasises the benefits of this diet both for human health and the environment. Although there is much that I disagree with in their publicity they are right when they make the point that what we eat and where it come from has an impact on the planet. The same might be said of what we wear: recent research has shown that a lot a clothes bought today are only worn five times before being thrown out. But if that item of thrown-out clothing has a high nylon content if will take a minimum of 40 years to decompose in a landfill site.

Over the past 40 years the way we live has been radically transformed: from what we eat and wear to our sources of energy and information. All of these changes have had some impact on the world we live in. We live in a finely balanced ecosystem so changes in one area will affect other areas of the

ecosystem – not always in a manner that could have been predicted.

The Bible has a lot to say about the world that we live in and humanities relationship to the environment. Some of the obscure dietary laws and other less read areas of the legal texts in the Old Testament can help us to think more clearly about how we live ethically in the world today. This year’s Lent Course is going to look at some of the key environmental issues of our time and explore how the ancient Biblical texts might help us think and act on these issues more clearly.

SLEAFORD KESWICK BIBLE MINISTRY 2019 7.30pm at the Riverside Church

Friday, 8th March Peter Maiden

Peter has served with Operation Mobilisation for more than 40 years and is now the International Director Emeritus. He has also been involved with the Keswick Convention for 20 years and serves at present as the Minister-at-Large. He is the author of four books and has served for more than 30 years as a elder in his local church.

STAMPS! Thank you very much for the many stamps collected in our box in church for the work of the Leprosy Mission. All kinds of stamps are welcome, foreign as well as GB issues. Whole collections are obviously of value if anyone is downsizing or having a clearout? The work of the Leprosy Mission is vast and still very much ongoing, working in 32 countries across the world. We are asked to pray particularly for the work of two hospitals, Anandaban in Nepal and Purulia in West Bengal, both providing healing and hope for leprosy sufferers. The Mission is aware of the many who live in remote areas, or hide away for fear of diagnosis, and so provides outreach clinics for identifying and treating patients where they are. Your stamps do provide funds to contribute to this work, so if you do receive any letters please save the stamps. Thank you !

BISHOP’S VISITOR UPDATE

WILLIAM ALVEY SCHOOL

by Beryl Risdell

School activities have resumed after the recent Half Term holiday when everyone enjoyed the exceptionally mild weather. Perhaps spring has sprung early or maybe there will be more of winter to come!

In recent weeks several of the year groups have enjoyed visits out of school as part of their work. The Y1's (aged 5/6)went to Lincoln Castle, the Y6's (aged 10/11) went to Clumber Park and the Y2's (aged 6/7) to NCCD at the Hub in Sleaford. A mixed age group of singing enthusiasts went to the Sheffield Arena to join other children from further afield. The Reception children (aged 4/5) stayed in school and the Fire Brigade came to visit. I'm sure it wasn't an emergency but no doubt it was very exciting for the children!

Collections of copper coins are still being gratefully received towards the cost of the roundel to be erected in Lloyds Bank to commemorate William Alvey. I am happy to take them into school if you have any coins.

I am continuing my visits to Assembly and to Mrs Camm's class to hear “readers” and chat about books.

In a few weeks I shall have been visiting the school as Bishop's Visitor for six years. Everyone, staff and children, all work very hard and I ask for your continued prayers for everyone at the Alvey.

Walter or William or Wxxxxxx?

If you don’t know Yvette in St. Denys’s, you might like to make her acquaintance somewhen. At the far east end of the north aisle, to the right or south of the black and white marble chest-tomb against the wall is a memorial slab or coffin-lid. On it are carved a female head, hands clasped in prayer and two feet in pointed slippers. On the edge is an inscription in Old French: WS KY PAR ICI PASSEZ PUR LE ALME IVEYT PRIEZ KY FU LE FEME HO W DE ROUCEBY KY DEU DE LA ALME HEN AY MERCI. [“You who pass by here, pray for the soul of Yvette, who was the honoured wife of W of Rauceby and on whose soul may God have mercy”]

St. Denys’s really has no right to use this artefact. It was found in a railway cutting just south of Lincoln in the Malandry field when the Grantham-Lincoln railway was being built. The site was originally the chancel of the chapel of the Hospital of Holy Innocents south-east of the High Street/South Park roundabout, Lincoln.

Who was ‘W’? Various Walters and Williams occur in the 1300s. Was one of them this ‘W’?

One seemingly colourful character was a William de Rouceby, described as a merchant. Some of his alleged activities can be described as :”colourful”. Let the Close Rolls of Edward III [1354] tell part of the story:

“Concerning the capture of a certain ship named The Saint Marie of Coronade from Genoa and certain goods and chattels found in the said ship, at the suit of Anthony Compaignon, ’merchant of Genoa,' William of Rouceby having been impeached came into the king's chancery at Westminster, and he says that the aforesaid ship came into The Race of St. Matthew in Brittany and there tarried through three flows and ebbs of the tide, while the mariners of the aforesaid ship, having failed to pay the customs due to the aforesaid lord the king of England in the aforesaid port on the merchandise carried in the same ship, sailed away with the same ship by night, wherefore the said William as one of the retainers of John Avenel, captain and lieutenant of the lord the king in the duchy of Brittany,'' following the aforesaid ship by order of Thomas of Lyndelowe, admiral of the said John Avenel in the aforesaid duchy, captured the said ship together with the aforesaid merchandise near the Scilly Islands in Cornwall, (taking these) for the aforesaid cause as a prize of the said captain's according to the custom of those regions, accounting for the same to the aforesaid John Avenel and answering to him for them ; wherefore he does not think that he ought to be haled at the suit of the said Anthony for the capture of the aforesaid ship and goods and chattels.” Was this Yvette’s husband? Research continues, so ‘watch this space’!

Douglas Hoare.
