What We Want Our Students to Know About Reading

that all readers struggle with text at some time and need to learn to negotiate difficult reading situations to understand and remember what was read

that they need to figure out new vocabulary and remember key words that they need to recognize and repair confusion that they need to have a purpose for reading in mind that print materials have a variety of structures and that we read these structures in

different ways e.g. narratives, textbooks, poems, magazines... that good readers use thinking strategies as well as decoding strategies - question, make

connections, infer, activate prior knowledge, determine importance, visualize, summarize, synthesize

that they need to find ways to “hold” thinking - margin notes, sticky notes, highlighting, using graphic organizers

that they need to reread or adjust the pace of their reading (e.g. slow down) when reading a piece of difficult text

that they need to use text features to aid comprehension that talking to others about their reading helps them with meaning

From Your School Nurse

Anyone can get head lice. Check for head lice weekly as part of your regular routine. The best way to avoid the spread of lice is by avoiding head-to-head contact. Remind your children not to share combs, brushes, hats, scarves or anything used on the head.

Checking for lice:

Use a bright light (a magnifying glass may help) Part hair in small sections and look near the scalp Head lice are tiny grey/brown insects that live only on the scalp of humans. They crawl quickly but

cannot fly or jump. Adult female lice glue eggs on the hair shaft close to the scalp. If you find lice:

Check all the people that live in your house Treat all cases at the same time to stop the spread of lice Inform the school and/or daycare so classmates can be checked Tell anyone in close contact with your child (family members, friends, baby-sitters)

Getting rid of lice:

Treatment products are to be used only on those who have head lice, as they do not prevent lice. Talk to a health professional about products and methods available. Follow instructions carefully. The Wet Combing Method helps find and remove head lice by combing through hair soaked with conditioner, using a fine-toothed comb. For more information on Wet Combing Method or on lice visit: www.niagararegion.ca/health search lice or call the Parent Talk Line at 905-688-8248 or 1-888-505-6074 ext. 7555

Immunization Record Review:

Is Your Child’s Vaccination Record Up to Date?

The Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), Amending Reg. 645 of R.R.O. 1990, requires Public Health to collect and maintain immunization records for all school-aged children in Niagara. At the beginning of December 2015, letters were mailed to parents/legal guardians of elementary and secondary school students who have incomplete immunization records on file at Public Health.

If you received this Immunization Notice in the mail (blue form) please ensure that you provide the required immunization information to Public Health in order to avoid suspension from school. Suspension will take effect in May 2016. If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to call the Vaccine Preventable Disease program at 1-888-505-6074 or 905-688-8248 ext. 7425 Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
