School Attendance

One of the most important things your child can do to achieve academic success is also one of the most basic: going to school every day. Research has shown that your child's attendance record may be the biggest factor influencing his/her academic success. If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school. It’s vital that students go to school every day – even in the early years of primary school. As a parent or guardian, it is possible to plan ahead in order to limit your child's absences,

Do you want to know more about your child's program options in high school? Do you want to know more about your child's options after high school graduation? Do you want to know how to access funds for post secondary education and how to apply?

Roll Up The Rim

Its back! ROLLLLL UP THE RIM TO WIN! Mrs. Black

and Miss Pietrobon’s kindergarten class would like to collect

Roll up the Rim winners to donate to local shelters (coffee, do-

nuts). This would be a wonderful opportunity for our students at

St. David’s to participate and make this a school wide project.

Since our character trait this month is kindness, this would

teach them about the kindness of giving to those in need. There

are so many people out there that struggle daily to find shelter,

food, or water. Something as simple as this can help! Please

have all donations in by Friday March 3, 2017.

Thank you

Mrs. Black and Miss Pietrobon, DECE

Clean Your

Hands Cleaning your hands is the

most effective way to pre-

vent the spread of germs.

Regular hand cleaning

with soap and water, or an

alcohol based hand sani-

tizer will reduce the risk

of getting sick.

Cleaning your hands

should occur:

Before preparing

meals

Before eating

After using the wash-

room

After coughing or

sneezing

After blowing your

nose

After playing with

pets

After playing out-

doors

Use warm water and soap

and lather and scrub for at

least 15 seconds if your

hands are visibly dirty.

Water Does Wonders Pledge Campaign As part of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge (HKCC), Niagara has teamed up with commu-nities across Ontario to launch thewww.waterdoeswonders.ca Pledge Campaign to encourage organizations and families to make it easier for children to choose water over sugary drinks. Why Pledge? To be part of the solution! Kids are drinking way too many sugary drinks, which has a negative impact on their health and on the environment. We can all help by making water easier to access and by reducing the amount of sugary drinks we serve and sell to children. By taking the pledge, you are affirming your commitment to help children sip less sugar. What can you do? • Sign the pledge atwww.waterdoeswonders.ca. Your pledge will help Niagara earn Top Community status on the Hall of Pledges. • Print your pledge certificate and display it prominently • Check out the resources available atwww.waterdoeswonders.ca • Spread the word using #WaterDoesWonders to inspire others

On Thursday, February 16th the Parent Council has planned St David’s first dancethon for students in JK to grade 8. Each

grade will have an opportunity to spend a period in the gym dancing to their favourite tunes. A DJ has been booked for

the day and we are excited to have some fun and raise some money for the school as well. Danceathon collection enve-

lopes will be sent home this week and we are hoping that each family can raise $20 minimum. Thank you so much for

supporting this new fundraising endeavor!!

INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURES There may be times during the school year where inclement weather or other situa-tions could cause transportation cancellations or school closures. At times when student transportation has been cancelled and schools remain open, the decision of whether or not to have children in school on that day rests with the parent or guardian. Should you decide not to send your child to school in the event that transpor-tation is cancelled but schools remain open, or if your child is ill or late, please ensure that you call your child’s school to inform them of your child’s absence. A key resource in any emergency is the DSBN Emergency Information form that you filled out at the beginning of the school year. Please let the school know of any changes in contact information or procedures you wish to be followed throughout the school year. For secondary schools it may become necessary to cancel late buses. Notice will be provided via school announcements and on the websites and subscription fea-tures by 11:30 a.m. Information about transportation cancellations and school closures will be available as soon as it is available through the following channels:

Scholastic Book Fair - Thank you to all students, parents and volunteers who supported the Scholastic

Book Fair at St. Davids. Total sales exceeded $3500.00 which means many new books will be added to our library collection. St. Davids students are engaged readers and are fully supported by our strong community.

Forest of Reading Book Clubs - Many students in Grades

5 - 8 are joining other students across Ontario by participating in Silver Birch and Red Maple Reading Clubs. Between January and April, these students select from a number of exciting fiction and non-fiction titles and read at least, 5 books to qualify to participate in a DSBN Reading conference held in May. "Just keep reading" is their motto!

ROBOTICS CLUB The Robotics Club continues to meet every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

The students continue to impress Mr. Bateson with their artistic talent. New creations are be-

ing created every morning. Mr. Bateson is quite impressed and is looking forward to the

DSBN Championship on Feb. 23rd .

The Junior girls volleyball team had a great season of improvement and fun this year. Their

hard work and diligent practicing paid off, and they became the DSBN Consolation Champi-

ons! The girls worked together as a team, helping each other, and literally "having each other's

backs". Way to go girls!

The junior boys volleyball team had a successful season in the fall. The boys worked hard dur-

ing practice and improved greatly over the course of the season. Many of the boys were play-

ing for the first time learning from the more experienced players and assistant coaches Mac-

gregor Armstrong and Lucas Delorenzo. In the end the boys captured the consolation champi-

onship. Way to go team!

To ensure that we have the appropriate accommodations and conditions in place for our

students to successfully complete the Primary and Junior EQAO assessments in May,

DSBN has developed a midyear review to be completed by the end of March. The purpose

of the mid-year review is to provide teachers with further evidence of student learning in

literacy and numeracy, to help determine next steps for teaching and learning.
