Parish Partners We are working to reinstitute our Parish Partners program. Parish Partners is a way to help integrate new members into the life of St. David’s. This is a “person to person” ministry helping every new member to know that we are glad they have chosen St. David’s as their Church home and are welcomed into this wonderful Parish family.

How does this work? New Members are paired through common areas of interest. The Parish Partner would be responsible for:

 introducing New Members to others

encouraging New Members to get connected by joining ministries of St. David’s

call, invite, and meet New Members at various Church activities and familiarize with St. David’s campus.

familiarize New Member with St. David’s campus

Please pray about this important ministry and contact Jan Georges (770-993-1094x118 or [email protected]) if you would like to be a Parish Partner.

NEW! Transportat ion Minis try

From time to time there are parishioners who need rides to church, to doctor appointments, or to meetings at the church or other places. There are some of us who feel that we as a parish can provide this ministry, but it will be necessary to get some volunteer drivers who are willing to drive at least occasionally to serve in this ministry. We haven't worked out all of the details yet, but we are looking to find out if there is interest in supporting this ministry. If you are interested in helping with this project, please contact Don Nahser at 770-475-9684, Cell: 404-626-7808, [email protected].

Class i f i ed: 1. “YOU CALL - I HAUL DELIVERY SERVICES”: College student looking for work, willing to help move various objects to the location of your choice. Rates: 20 dollar flat rate plus any dumping fees. Call or text John Fallon (404)293-0099.

2. The youth need tents! The Youth Group will be going camping the first week in June, but they have nothing to camp in! If you have one or more tents, preferably of larger sizes, that you would be willing to loan to the youth group for that week, please talk to Katie McRee as soon as possible. 770-993-1094,x103 or [email protected]. Thanks!

3. St. David's Parishioner Seeking Small House to Lease: A professional, fifty-something, non-smoking female (and soon to be "empty-nester") is seeking a small house to lease in the Roswell/Alpharetta area for a minimum of 24 months. Targeted move date is the last week of May. Please contact Melinda at (404) 660-0317 or at [email protected]. Referrals greatly appreciated and references will be provided upon request.

Nursery Updates : Check your pockets and purses, please!

The nursery is down to 4 pagers. It can be hard to remember every detail during the excitement of picking up your child from the nursery on Sunday mornings, but if you can remember to check your pockets and purses for pagers, it would be helpful. If you could also check at home and/or in your cars to see if you have a pager from St. David’s, we would be grateful.

A HUGE thank you! A HUGE thank you is in order to the Perera and

Thompson families! Both Niranjan & Michelle Perera and Mitch & Kelly Thompson donated a bunch of gently used toys and books to the Infant and Toddler Rooms. We have seen quite a few extra bright smiles on Sunday mornings when the children see these “new” toys!

Recycl ing: There is a need at St. David’s for a recycling program so that we may be good stewards of this beautiful world that God has given to us. Unfortunately, the City of Roswell does not provide a recycling program for businesses except at the Recycling Center, no pick up. We have the need to recycle office paper, cardboard, plastic and cans.

If you would be interested in collecting recycling (even if it is just one of the items listed above) and taking to the Recycling Center on a regular basis, please contact Jan Georges at 770-993-1094, ext. 118, or [email protected].

Can you donate an hour or more to St . David’s?? I hope you have noticed that we have begun a process to spring clean our Campus. Looking objectively at our surroundings brings to light that we could use a good cleaning and some painting. We all take pride in this wonderful facility and we want to do everything possible to show our pride. We will have Rector candidates coming through in the months ahead and we want to make the best impression possible! We will be selling St. David’s t-shirts and aprons to raise funds for this project. So if you cannot volunteer your time, please buy a t-shirt or apron. If you or a group of friends here at St. David’s would like to volunteer your time and elbow grease (it can be as little as an hour) please call Jan Georges at 770-993-1094, ext. 118.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT PROGRAMS IN EASTERTIDE

The Problems of Faith The Rev. Kenneth Swanson, Ph.D.

In spite of our vast technological advances, 21st century Christians are vexed by the same intellectual and spiritual questions that have troubled believers across two millennia. Can we have any certainty about the existence of God? How can a loving, all powerful God allow bad things happen to good people? Is Jesus the only way to salvation? When you strip away dogma, are all religions really the same? When we disagree, where can we find the truth? If we want to please God, how are we to live? This seven part series will explore how Christians have answered these questions throughout history, and how we can think about them today. April 7th: Does God Exist? Intellectual Answers. April 14th: Does God Exist? Moral Answers. April 21st: Does God Exist? Existential Answers. April 28th: The Problem of Evil. May 5th: Is Christianity Unique? May 12th: Bible, Bishops or Reason: Where is our Authority? May 19th: Super Saints or Humble Believers?

Rector’s Forums in Eastertide—10:15 a.m. in Jeffords Fellowship Hall...

Many historians would argue that the 4th century was single most important in the life of the Church. The Church became enfranchised within the Roman Empire; Christian monasticism began with the Desert Fathers in Egypt and Syria; the Christian theological vision became set at the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople; and the discipline and theology of Christian spiritual formation was codified. Many of the key figures of the century are barely known in the modern Church, even though what we believe and how we pray was shaped by them. This three part series will examine the life of work of the most significant Christians of that age.

April 11th: Anthony and Athanasius. The greatest of all monks and the model for heroic Christianity for following centuries was Anthony of Egypt. His

biographer was Athanasius, the Bishop of Alexandria, who first articulated the theology of the Trinity.

May 9th: The Cappadocian Fathers. Remarkably, the three greatest theologians of the age grew up together in a small town in Cappadocia (modern Turkey). Two were brothers: Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nyssa, and their dear friend was Gregory of Nazianzus. All three became influential bishops, and their theological work shaped how Christians have understood both the Trinity and the Incarnation right into the 21st century. They created the formulas in the Nicene Creed, which we profess every week in our Sunday liturgies.

May 16th: Evagrius Ponticus and John Cassian. Almost unknown fifty years ago, archeological discoveries after World War II have shown that Evagrius Ponticus was the greatest Christian writer on spirituality who ever lived. His disciple John Cassian, took his writings to the West where they shaped both Celtic and Benedictine spirituality.

Guild of St. Martin (of Tours) The Guild of St. Martin (of Tours) is a source of ongoing comfort and support for immediate and extended parish families of servicemen and women who are engaged in military service, here and abroad. The objectives of this Guild are:

1. To identify families – immediate and extended of St. David’s Parish engaged in military service, here and abroad – especially in areas of conflict.

2. To identify ways in which we as a faith community might be of ongoing comfort or assistance to the military personnel and/or their families.

3. To commit to faithful ministry to these families and individuals.

4. To pray for all involved on a daily basis and to keep them in our corporate prayer life.

5. To pray daily for peace. No matter people’s position on any particular war – or war in general – everyone from hawk to pacifist can and should; from our baptismal covenant, be prepared to reach out to all involved in military service to offer comfort, aid and prayer. If you know of a serviceman or servicewoman who should be included on our prayer list, please contact Rev. Anne Elizabeth or Fred Lickfold. If you are interested in being a part of the Guild of St. Martin, contact Fred at 770-649-8485 or [email protected]. Why St. Martin? St. Martin (of Tours ) stands out as a soldier caught in the midst of a very complicated situation where geo-politics were at least as complicated as the situation in which our military finds itself today.

30 Hour Famine: Good job to everyone who participated in the 30 Hour Famine back in February. Most of our money has been collected and sent off to World Vision and as a group we raised $4,694.17! That’s enough money to care for a child for 13 years! Way to go! And of course, thank you to everyone who gave generously to our group and helped with all the details.

Youth, if you will have money to turn in, it’s not too late. Just pass it on to Katie as soon as you can.

Summer Trip sign-up If you are interested in going on either one of the youth trips this summer, don’t forget that you must sign up and turn in your deposit check of $100 (per trip) to reserve your spot. Unfortunately, exceptions cannot be made on the RSVP date, but if finances are an issue, talk to Katie and we will work something out. Below are the basics of the trips, but check previous mailings for the details:

Amazing Race: June 2nd (morning)- June 7th (evening), $300, 6th-12th graders

Mission Trip: June 25th (early afternoon)- July 2nd (evening), $350, 6th-12th graders

Youth host Jonah Ice Cream Party It has become tradition for the youth to host an ice cream party for the cast and friends of the children’s musical. Join us on April 18th for a chance to serve the younger members of the church after their big performance! We will gather before 4:00 to set up what we can before the musical starts, watch the performance together, serve ice cream, eat ice cream, clean up and head home. Please let Katie know if you are able to help… it takes many scooping arms to get that ice cream out to the masses!

Youth lead “PALs” On Sunday, April 11, we are gathering in JFH from 4:30-6:30 to lead the 4th and 5th graders as we have for the past several years. Come ready to play some games and share about your experiences in middle school. The EpiscoPALs meeting will be over at 6:00 and we will spend the last 30 minutes in fellowship together before heading home at 6:30.

Why get screened? Why get screened? Why get screened? Why get screened?

Taking preventive steps such as making lifestyle changes and getting health screenings may help you

avoid a stroke or other serious health events in the future. Early intervention is important.

If you are over fifty, if you have diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure, or if you have a

family history of stroke or heart disease, you may be at risk, even if you feel great.

Actually, four out of five people who suffer a stroke, have no apparent symptoms and nearly 30% of

strokes occur under the age of 65. But the good news is that according to the National Stroke

Association, 80% of strokes can be prevented.

Life Line Screening will help you find out if you are at risk, so you and your doctor can take the next

steps and be proactive about your health.

Register for a preventive screening today and start planning for a healthier tomorrow.

We will match up drivers with riders at St. David's at 4:30, so don't be late and don't forget your dish!

PRESCHOOL DIGGIN’ DADS

As mentioned in the previous newsletter, the Daddies at St. David’s Preschool are very special. Just a few weeks ago, we treated them to a fun filled morning with coffee and doughnuts while “attending” school with their son or daughter. On Saturday, March 27th, several Daddies (and a scout, too) reciprocated and “treated” the preschool to a playground work party called “Diggin’ Dads”! They built and stained new picnic tables, filled the sandboxes with new sand, and stained the fence around the air conditioning units. The playground has a fresh sparkle just in time for all of St. David’s children and families to enjoy this spring and summer!

RECTOR SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Rector Search Committee has been hard at work meeting 4 times in the last month, often with our very excellent consultant. At this time we have completed the initial drafts of all sections of the Parish Profile Survey form, anticipating completion near the end of April. It is with a great deal of

excitement we announce we will be conducting the survey in an online format with hard copies available for those who wish it. Right now our goal is to have this “go live” sometime in mid-May. There will be more information about this in the weeks to come. For anyone wishing to submit a candidate’s name we ask that you hold them until the appropriate time, probably in the

latter half of June. It is important to note that once a name is submitted it becomes confidential information and cannot be discussed again. Please know we carry the concerns of all of you in our hearts and prayers as we work through the process of first getting to know who we are as a community and then matching this knowledge with that person called by God to us. We seek and are blessed by God’s presence in our tasks and ask that you hold us in your prayers daily. Blessings, Rector Search Committee March 28, 2010
