FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK: FATHER PAUL CAODear Parishioners,

The Archdiocese has asked us to be careful and to slowly open our churches in a safe way. After discussion and suggestions from the staff and the priests in the parish, we have decided to open only four Masses during the weekend in phase 2. I hope you understand that we want to make sure that we do everything according to the guidelines to open safely with precautions.

The Cardinal has lifted the requirement to attend Mass, and we will continue to live–stream the 10:30 AM Sunday Mass on the website and through Facebook Live. Those who are uncomfortable returning to mass, or medically compromised or who should not return yet, are invited to attend Mass online or watch it on TV.

We have made a temporary change to our Mass schedule. We are combining the 4 PM and 5:30 PM Saturday Masses into one, 5 PM at St. Celestine. We know that many people want another mass at St. Cyprian. However, with the social distancing rules, we can only fit 40 people at St. Cyprian, but we can have 100 at St. Celestine. It’s tough when we can’t be in a place that feels like home. We all want to be at both sites, and we do have a 9 AM at St. Cyprian. But, until we can smooth out our new operations, this is the best we can do. Many combined parishes can’t even get two sites opened during phase 2. This is just temporary until we go back to the normal Mass schedule. We miss you all and we hope to see you all soon.

For phase 2, we offer a 5 PM Saturday Vigil Mass at St. Celestine, 7:30 AM at St. Celestine, 9 AM at St. Cyprian, and 10:30 AM at St. Celestine. There will be a 8 AM Mass on Tuesdays at St. Cyprian and on Wednesdays at St. Celestine. Reconciliation is offered on Saturdays from 4–4:45 PM at St. Celestine. Please sign up online through the link on our website to attend any of the weekend Masses. No sign up is necessary for weekday Masses; someone will ask for your contact information when you arrive. There is no sign up necessary for Reconciliation.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS - Every time we have a Mass, Reconciliation, a funeral, a wedding, a Baptism, we need volunteers to help. Volunteers check people in, usher them to their seats, and help clean and sanitize the churches after people have been in them. Because we have two churches open, we need many, many volunteers to help. You can sign up to be trained as a volunteer on the website, and to help at church there once you have been trained.

Please continue to pray for one another during this difficult time and be assured of my prayers for all of you and your family at my daily mass. Let us pray for peace in our country and pray for an end of the pandemic.

May God bless you all!

In prayer,Fr. Paul

June 28, 2020 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time 3

YOU MUST SIGN UP TO ATTEND MASS

The Archdiocese of Chicago requires that anyone attending Sunday Mass register in advance online. The privilege to reopen for Mass is offered with a limit to the maximum number of people who can be in the churches at one time. We must maintain records for the Illinois Department of Public Health of all who enter our churches for contact tracing when a confirmed case of COVID–19 is identified. You may sign up for the weekend Masses and can access the link to SignUp Genius on the website and through our Facebook page. Daily Mass, which takes place on Tuesdays at 8 AM at St. Cyprian and Wednesdays at 8 AM at St. Celestine, and Reconciliation, which takes place on Saturdays from 4 to 4:45 PM at St. Celestine, does not require a reservation; someone will take your information at church for daily mass.

Remember the requirement to attend Sunday Mass has been lifted and we will still stream the 10:30 AM Mass live on Facebook and the website. If you are not feeling well, are over 65 or compromised medically, we encourage you to participate by watching Mass on TV or online. We want everyone to be safe!

SUNDAY READINGS June 28, 2020 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

READING 1 2 Kgs 4:8–11, 14–16aOne day Elisha came to Shunem, where there was a woman of influence, who urged him to dine with her. Afterward, whenever he passed by, he used to stop there to dine. So she said to her husband, “I know that Elisha is a holy man of God. Since he visits us often, let us arrange a little room on the roof and furnish it for him with a bed, table, chair, and lamp, so that when he comes to us he can stay there.” Sometime later Elisha arrived and stayed in the room overnight.

Later Elisha asked, “Can something be done for her?” His servant Gehazi answered, “Yes! She has no son, and her husband is getting on in years.” Elisha said, “Call her.” When the woman had been called and stood at the door, Elisha promised, “This time next year you will be fondling a baby son.”

Responsorial Psalm Ps 82:2–3, 16–17, 18–19R. For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. or: Alleluia.

READING 2 Rom 6:3–4, 8–11Brothers and sisters: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.

GOSPEL Mt 10:37–42Jesus said to his apostles: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his crossand follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and whoever receives a righteous man because he is a righteous man will receive a righteous man’s reward. And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.”

SAINT JUNÍPERO SERRA (1713—1784)July 1

No one who has stood before the quiet majesty of Mission San Juan Capistrano, or the altogether different but no less lovely Mission Dolores in San Francisco, or any of the missions from San Diego to Sonoma can fail to bless the Franciscan padre who, while not founder of each, was inspiration for them all, Saint Junípero Serra. Abandoning the comfortable academic life to which his doctorate in theology entitled him, Serra journeyed to the New World where his tireless traveling, dramatic preaching, and penitential austerity converted thousands of native peoples. Saving souls and celebrating the sacraments were Padre Serra’s primary mission but not his only one. Education in letters and crafts, trades and agriculture transformed the people, while roads and irrigation systems transfigured the landscape. His more than thirty years of ministry were not free from conflict with authorities or without controversy in the retrospectively critical eye of history. But when John Paul II beatified him in 1988, he praised Padre Serra for assisting his converts to use their new faith to advance their true human development.

CHRISTIAN HOSPITALITY

Day in and day out, we are required to make judgment calls informed by tough, durable, serviceable Christian love. We do what we can do, and God takes notice. God is in charge of rewards, and a glass of water will do when that is what we have to offer with a glad and open heart.

Paul gives us a clear theology for the missionary work we do whenever anybody is close at hand. He reminds us that our work, our ministry, is carried on in concert with Christ. We have been baptized into his death and life. In any given moment both life and death are there, a kind of play of shadow and light. Sometimes it’s difficult to tell where shadow leaves off and light begins. God will take care of that, too.

ON MESSAGES IN A BOTTLE, WITHOUT THE BOTTLEstguerinparish.org 6

They are akin, perhaps, to those messages in bottles that people who are stranded on deserted islands always send hoping that

someone will come to the rescue. At least that’s how the movies go. I’ve never actually seen a message in a bottle. Well. I wrote a poem for my

wife once, rolled it up, put it in a bottle, corked it, and gave it to her as a gift for Valentine’s Day, but I don’t think that counts. The English rock band The Police released a song called Message in a Bottle in 1979. Sting wrote it. Per the hook, “I'll send an SOS to the world/ I'll send an SOS to the world/ I hope that someone gets my/ I hope that someone gets my/ I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle, yeah.” Yeah.

Or perhaps they are akin to those little rocks with messages on them that some girl in Rogers Park was leaving for people to find as she spread some anonymous joy in a pandemic world. I read about her in the Chicago Tribune a couple of months ago, and connecting the girl’s work to other such endeavors, the author of the piece saw the message–in–a–bottle connection right away. As Christopher Borrelli put it: “Painted rocks carrying inspirational sayings, left in public places for anyone to stumble across, has become the 21st century answer to the message

in a bottle, dropped into an ocean.” Well, there you go. Also per Borelli: “Now, in a pandemic…we’re seeing a renewed avalanche of kindness.”

All of which is probably fueling another message–in–a–bottle next–of–kin: sidewalk messages put down in chalk for pedestrians to come upon––and ponder over––while out for a stroll. Or, in my case, while out for a run. They were showing up everywhere for a while there, but I’ve seen fewer and fewer as more and more things open up around here. Too bad. I like them. Consider “Breathe” and “Hope” and “This will end.” Consider “When all is lost, all is found.” And deeply consider “Why can’t your nose be 12 inches long? ‘Cause then it would be a foot.” I saw a brand new one just a couple of days ago, though, so some kind–spirited folks are still reaching out to the cosmos. And this one spoke to me loudest of all: “Humankind. Be both.”

Have you noticed a certain animosity in the world these days? There are the protests against police brutality and endemic racism, of course, but such social evils are just extreme realizations of the

attitude expressed by a woman in a coffee shop who was annoyed by another patron for pointing out to the employees that the woman was coughing, and sans mask. This annoyed the mask–less woman, and she showed it by coughing on the patron and leaving the store. Has it come to this? Or, sadly, have we deep, deep down already been there all along? Per Jesus in today’s Gospel, “Whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because the little one is a disciple—amen, I say to you, he will surely not lose his reward.” Humankind. Be both. “I hope that someone gets my message in a bottle, yeah.” Yeah.
