A message from the Vicar

It was one of the most strikingly stark changes ofmood I had ever had to make. I was exploring myvocation to ordained ministry when it happened. Ihad spent just over an hour with Iqbal, an asylumseeker who was struggling to come to terms withhis experiences in an Iraqi prison under SaddamHussein. I sat with him, and I listened. I listenedas he wept, and I listened in those long silent pauses as he tried to explainwhat had happened to him. The silences were worse than the words hesaid. In the silence were experiences of pain that words would not convey.Gradually though, piecing together the fragments of what he said, and thephysical symptoms he manifested in front of me, it turned out that Iqbal wasa modern day survivor of a form of crucifixion. After that conversation, I thenwent on to the Zimbabwean Independence Day Party. African rhythms, dancing and food, filled with hope for a truly free Zimbabwe. This group ofragtag asylum seekers, refugees, and volunteers danced like there was notomorrow. I have never been to a party that was so exhilarating and upliftingbefore or since. When I got home, I was completely emotionally exhaustedand overwhelmed by the sheer range of feelings I had experienced in oneday.

It is one of the more unusual features of a Vicar's life that we end up makingsome fairly sharp transitions from situations of joy to sorrow sometimes, butthat would take some beating! Holy Week is where the Church marks thattransition from the almost false dawn of joy in Palm Sunday to the extremesorrow and pain of Jesus' crucifixion to the true joy of the resurrection be-yond death. It is a tale of extreme transformation, the sort of transformationthat can only be achieved through Godly love, the love that willingly sufferswith those who suffer and rejoices with those who rejoice. Come and cele-brate with us this radical transforming love, come and glimpse some-thing of that love with us over this Holy Week! /I~,~;.
