To make the best rods in the business, St. Croix must partner with the best suppliers. We’re especially proud of our network of graphite material partners, all of whom

contribute to the exceptional performance, quality and value that define a St. Croix rod. For 2012, the 3M Company, a long-time St. Croix supply partner, will be

supplying their exciting 3M™ Matrix Resin to fuse the graphite in our highest performance SCVI, SCV, SCIV and select SCII graphite rods. 3M’s remarkable composite

resin uses nano-technology to significantly improve the strength and durability of graphite rods, and when used in conjunction with our other advanced materials and

proprietary design and manufacturing technologies, furthers our ability to build the best rods on earth.

A B R I E F B A C K G R O U N D O N G R A P H I T E :

The fishing tackle industry uses the words graphite and carbon interchange-ably. Technically speaking, the correct term is “carbon.”

A lot has changed since the introduction of the first graphite fishing rods backin the mid-1970s. Designed largely by trial and error, early graphite rods wereinspired by the imagination, experience and talent of the rod designers – andthe availability of a steady stream of new and improved graphite fibers.

Graphite fiber, a by-product of the space race, evolved quickly as aerospaceapplications for this exciting new material expanded. Each generation of “new”graphite was stronger and stiffer (i.e.,“higher modulus”) than previous generations as the “space race” ratcheted graphite development into high gear.

Rod makers took notice, and soon the space race created a “modulus race” inthe fishing rod industry. As each new high-modulus graphite fiber was developed for aerospace, rod designers used it to create lighter, faster, moreresponsive fishing rods.

In the past decade, everything changed. Graphite fibers are now available in a huge selection of modulus and strength, and new high-modulus / high-strainfibers deliver both increased stiffness and superior strength. St. Croix currently uses nine different graphite materials formulated to our exact specifications to design and build over 30 different series of rods – one of thelargest in the industry.

Rod design has also evolved from the draftsman’s table to the computer, andwe now use sophisticated mathematical algorithms to design precise tapers foreach graphite material to achieve the exact performance characteristics wewant in our rods.

THE TECHNOLOGY THAT MAKES OUR RODS SO STRONG IS INVISIBLE TO THE NAKED EYE. AT LEAST UNTIL YOU SET THE HOOK.

The 3M Company, the global leader in adhesive technology, recently

introduced a new breakthrough resin that uses nano-sized (ultra-microscopic)

spheres of silica as a homogeneous, non-abrasive filler between the carbon

fibers of a graphite rod blank, which results in a much stronger, more sensitive

finished product. We’ve named our formulation of this new resin NSi (Nano

Silica), and we use it to build our highest performance graphite rods.

The “nano-silica” particles in 3M’s Matrix Resin are uniformly distributed and

densely packed in the resin that binds the individual graphite fibers, which

reinforces them during compression when the rod is flexed. This significantly

increases the fibers’ compression strength by resisting micro-buckling – for improved hoop and flex strength of the

blank. The result is a 30% (or more) stronger blank without any change in the weight, action or power

of the finished rod.

The nano-silica filler also improves the resin’s adhesive bond between the carbon fibers, which increases the

internal shear strength of the rod blank while further improving the flex strength. Almost twice as hard as conventional

resins when fully cured, our tests reveal that rods manufactured with 3M’s new Matrix Resin show both an increase in

modulus for improved sensitivity, and a significant increase in fracture resistance and overall blank toughness.

The end results are astonishing. Rods built with 3M™ Matrix Resin are stronger, more durable and tougher – with

significantly improved hoop/flex strength and resistance to fracture. All without an increase in weight or a change in

the rod’s action or power.

A superior resin does not automatically result in a superior fishing rod. But when combined with St. Croix’s state-of-the-art computer-assisted rod design capabilities, our own proprietary design and manufacturing technologies, and over 60 years of rod-making experience, the new 3M™ Matrix Resin makes a great rod even better.

ADVANCED REINFORCING TECHNOLOGY™ (ART™)

St. Croix’s Advanced Reinforcing Technology (ART) uses horizontally wrapped, high-strength carbon fibers on the inside of the hollow blanks to strengthen critical areas of our highest performance rods – without adding bulk or extra weight. (See page 6)

INTEGRATED POLY CURVE® ( IPC®) TECHNOLOGY

St. Croix’s proprietary Integrated Poly Curve (IPC) Technology was another breakthrough in blank design because it allows us to designrod tapers in continuous flowing curves instead of “step tapers” used previously. This results in smoother casting with no weak taper transition points. The continuous-curve tapers also transmit vibrations more efficiently for noticeably enhanced sensitivity. (See page 6)

WHAT IS MODULUS?

Modulus is the physical measure of a material’s stiffness,

equal to the ratio of applied load (stress) to the resulting

deformation of a material (strain). A fiber with higher

modulus is harder to bend – and will snap back faster –

than a lower modulus fiber of the same weight. That

means a rod made of high-modulus graphite requires fewer

fibers to achieve the same stiffness as a rod made with

lower modulus graphite – so the higher modulus rod weighs

less and telegraphs vibrations with more sensitivity.

But higher modulus fibers also tend to be more brittle than

lower modulus fibers, so rod designers must find just the

right balance between stiffness and strength when working

with high-modulus graphite fibers.

K E Y D E S I G N FA C T O R S

Other factors that impact the strength, weight, sensitivity

and action of a rod include the type and amount of resin

used to bind the fibers together, the amount of prepreg

material used, the type of scrim used to create the sheet of

graphite fibers that will form the blank, the pattern used to

cut the sheet to its final dimensions, and the shape of the

mandrel used to roll the graphite sheet into a finished blank.

Rod action and weight are also impacted by the type and

placement of guides.

Advanced Reinforcing Technology™ (ART™) is an exotic carbon fiber material that adds a magnitude

(10X) of strength with virtually no increase in blank diameter or weight. ART significantly improves the

hoop strength of the blank by preventing it from deforming or “ovaling” under a severe load, such as a

powerful hook set or fish battle. ART is also a critical part of our slim-profile ferrule design.

When you set out to uncover what makes a St. Croix different from other rods, you need look no further than the engineer sitting right beside the rod designer.

It’s a partnership that’s produced such breakthroughs as St. Croix’s exclusive Integrated Poly Curve® and Advanced Reinforcing Technology.™ Rod performance is only as good

as the design behind it – so before we even think about sending a rod through for production, we spend as much time as necessary in the design department to ensure that

every St. Croix rod is engineered and developed to outperform all others.

ST. CROIX VALUE. KEEPING IT ALIVE IN NORTH AMERICA.

SO MUCH GOES INTO A ST. CROIX ROD SO YOU CAN PULL SO MUCH OUT WITH ONE.

Applying Flex Coat thread and decal finish.

“ROD MODELS CURRENTLY MANUFACTURED IN PARK FALLS WILL CONTINUE TO BE MADE IN PARK FALLS. FRESNILLO ALLOWS US TO KEEP UP WITH GROWING DEMAND FOR ST. CROIX RODS.” – Paul Schluter, President, St. Croix Rod

Winders attaching guides to rods.

Examine a St. Croix rod closely and you’ll find a wealthof innovations and craftsmanship. But, in light of thefact you’d rather be fishing than sitting over a micro-scope, allow us to explain what makes a St. Croix rod sospecial. The journey begins in Park Falls, Wisconsinand eventually leads to Fresnillo, Mexico. It is in ParkFalls that a rare combination of blazing technology andgenuine handcraftsmanship come together to makeincomparable fishing tools. A tradition that continuesfor a select series of rods in Fresnillo.

THE SILICON VALLEY OF FISHING – IMAGINE.Anglers often think of Park Falls as a high-tech mecca. Afterall, there is nowhere else incorporating St. Croix’s proprietaryART™ and IPC® technologies. Likewise it’s here, and only

here, that rod designers stand side-by-side with engineersbringing their ideas to fruition so smoothly. It’s here you’ll alsofind the software St. Croix developed so blanks are built to the

highest standards in the industry – a tactic that is thefoundation leading to superior performance and durability.Laser micrometer and laser alignment machineryensures every guide and handle is put on perfectlystraight. There are rod-building tools here that other rodbuilders can only dream about. Of course, you can plugin a bunch of machines anywhere there’s electricity. What’s at the heart of a St. Croix rod is the time-honoredblend of technology and handcraftsmanship. In ParkFalls, over thirty pairs of hands contribute to three-dozendifferent steps before a St. Croix rod is deemed ready tocharge into the world looking for action. Thirty pairs ofhands attending to every last-minute detail. Thirty pairsof hands making sure a rod doesn’t leave Park Falls untilit’s ready to take on any fish in the world.

Of course, there are only so many hands in Park Falls,Wisconsin and over the years, the undeniable value of St. Croix rods has meant more and more people havewanted to fish one. Which means every year, more andmore rods leave Park Falls for waters throughout the world.

Well, it’s gotten to the point where we simply can’t makeenough in our Park Falls factory. It’s a small town. (Andwe’d like to keep it that way.) Faced with a decision ofopening another factory or outsourcing to Asia, we concluded the only way to ensure a St. Croix rod remains aSt. Croix rod was to construct a second factory in Fresnillo,Mexico. If you happen to be traveling through Fresnillo, you’ll find an almost mirror facility to our state-of-the-artPark Falls operation – same equipment, same manufacturingprocedures and the very same quality control protocols. Our Fresnillo facility manufactures a select group of rodsthat are designed and engineered here in Park Falls. Theserods offer the chance for an even greater segment of the

fishing population to get their hands on a St. Croix. Rod models currently manufactured in Park Falls will continue to be made in Park Falls. By making sure all ourrods are “Handcrafted in North America,” we are able tocontinue providing anglers with the best value in angling.

QUITTING TIME ALL DEPENDS ON

QUITTING.WHAT YOU’RE

If you’re like us, five o’clock is prime fishing time AM or PM. That kind of dedication requires rods that are as close to a sure thing as it gets. Of course, we’re talking about our new Rage series: Perfectly balanced SCIII graphite rods with IPC®

technology that combine premium Pac Bay Minima micro guideswith a small stripper guide for casting precision that borders onthe unfair. All that casting could take a toll on your hands, but theRage features our incredible neoprene skin handle that serves upunmatched comfort – pushing back that quitting hour as muchas possible. Equally sweet, the neoprene grip actually improveswhen it gets wet. Yes sir, the new Rage is more than ready whenthe hook setting goes round the clock.

ONLY 57% OF WORKING AMERICANS USE THEIR FULL ALLOTMENT OF VACATION DAYS. BET 100% OF THEM

DON’T FISH.

42

The other 43% that “get it” know just what to do with down

time: fish, fish, and oh yeah…fish some more. Of course that

opens up all kinds of possibilities anywhere there’s a lake, river

or promising stream. Here’s where a line of rods like the

Triumph® pays off huge. Made with SCII graphite and available

in a variety of actions, Triumph rods deliver more value per

cast than any other rod going, especially for those of us who

live to fish – and, at least for the time being, work to live.

REPEATING THE SAME BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTING DIFFERENT OUTCOMES

At St. Croix we’re of the belief that if more people fished, fewer folks would be sitting on psychiatrists’ couches ona regular basis. But that’s just us. Of course, no amount offishing will help you if you’re using anything less than a St. Croix® Avid Inshore rod. No need to hold back either,Integrated Poly Curve® tooling technology combined withhigh-modulus SCIII graphite blanks on all 22 models giveyou license to take your fishing up a few notches and thensome. Other notable features include Alps™ zirconiumguides with 316 stainless-steel frames for superior salt-water corrosion protection, and a handsome copper paintfinish that will raise the envy factor exponentially evenamong the most ardent wackos.

ISN’T INSANITY, IT’S CALLED FISHING.

MANNING A PUSH POLE VS. A SMARTPHONE.

ADVANTAGE PUSH POLE.We’re not suggesting that social media isn’t all that they sayit is, but it’s no substitute for chasing down some redfish ortarpon and sharing a cold one with an actual flesh-and-bloodfriend, now is it? And, quite frankly, nothing will improve yourstatus online, or elsewhere, like procuring a Mojo Inshorerod or two. Built with St. Croix’s premium-quality SCII graphiteand finished with Batson Forecast® hard aluminum-oxideguides with 316 stainless-steel frames, these rods are incredibly durable – performing as advertised in spinning orcasting configurations. They’re a superb value to boot, so ifthat doesn’t get your mojo moving, we don’t know what will.

THERE WILL BE OTHER PIANO RECITALS AND ANNIVERSARIES,

BUT AN EPIC STRIPER RUN IS

NON-NEGOTIABLE.It’s fine to show off your new Mojo Surf rod to that special someone. Heck, you can even go into excruciatingdetail about how great they perform and how strong SCII graphite makes them. But when you get to theweight-saving surf guides, drop it there. Any mention ofanything that would make it easier to stay out longer could take the conversation – as an obligated parent, partner or significant other – in a direction you don’twant to go, if you know what we mean.

FLY FISHING.

CAN A FLY ROD CHANGE YOUR LIFE?DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH OF A LIFE YOU

HAVE OUTSIDE OF

When it comes to understanding the latest sub-surface fishing techniques, few people know more than Kelly Galloup – which is whywe asked him to help us develop the best-selling Bank Robber™ andthe new-for-2012 High Stick Drifter. The Bank Robber is simply theultimate streamer-fishing rod for chucking big weighted flieseffortlessly but with the precision of a Tomahawk missile.

The new High Stick Drifter is designed specifically for today’sadvanced nymph fishing methods. They feature a special lightweighttip made possible by using high modulus/high strain SCV graphitewith NSi resin (featuring the 3M’s nano Matrix Resin) and a carbon-matte scrim. This unique tip reduces angler fatigue when the rod isheld high for long periods of time, while emphasizing sensitivity forbetter strike detection. And the balance? Incredible.

Both series feature SCVI graphite in lower sections for added powerwith reduced weight and St. Croix’s proprietary ART™ and IPC® tech-nology – making them the most technologically advanced fly rodsin existence. Can these rods change your life? Yea. We think so.

Ice Rod Strike Indicator System – How it Works:

St. Croix’s strike indicator system is adjustable, so its sensitivitylevel can accommodate different lure sizes. To make the bobbermore sensitive, push the spring forward through the grommet. To make it less sensitive, push it back.(illustration no. 1)

The system is most sensitivewhen there is a 30-degreebend (position 2) in thespring. To find the bottom, lower the jig until the indicator returns to position 1.Then, either slowly reel up onceor lift the rod slightly until theindicator is back to position 2.(illustration no. 2)
