HAVING SOME THOUGHTS ABOUT

BECOMING A PRIEST?

As you continue to pray on these thoughts, please do

not hesitate to come in and speak with our pastor, or

one of our other parish priests. Every priest who

ever lived has gone through the same discernment

process and every one of us can identify with how

you may be struggling with these thoughts. (914)

COLUMBIETTE NEWS

We are in our first few weeks of selling the 50/50

raffle tickets and have collected $670 to date. Tick-

ets are $5 each and can be found in the Church vesti-

bules. The mailing address can be found on each

ticket. The winning ticket will be pulled at our Val-

entine Dance on Feb. 13, 2016, and the winner will

receive half of all monies collected. The remaining

monies earned will be donated to various charitable

organizations. As the pot grows, so will the amount

of the winning ticket. You may not win as much,

but your chances of winning with us are better than

the NYS lottery. As the lottery says, “You have to

be in it to win it.” Thank you for your support. If

you have any questions, please call Pat Schneider at

914-420-6743. Thank you so much.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Volunteers are occasionally needed to answer the

are ill or on vacation. If you would like to help out,

please call the rectory, (914) 737-4705.

Please take an angel from the angel tree. The

groups we will be helping are Sara Burke House (a

battered women’s shelter), Good Counsel Homes,

Prison Fellowship, and our Troops overseas.

SOLEMN MASS IN HONOR OF

ST. COLUMBANUS

Monday, November 23, 2015 at 7:15pm

NOVEMBER 22, 2015 __ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH_ #481/PAGE 4

As the Church year comes to an end we give thanks

to God for His many blessings He has showered

upon us. We also ask for His consolation and grace

amidst the difficulties and sorrows that we offer to

Him in union with His Son’s sacrifice on the cross.

On Monday, November 23, at 7:15 p.m. we will

have our special Mass in honor of our patron saint

on his feast day. We will bless the beautiful banner

of St. Columbanus at this Mass. The banner will

hang permanently in the church. There will be re-

freshments afterward in Dillon Hall. It will be a

time of great blessing for our parish. I hope every-

one that is able will come.

The following week we will have our Parish Ad-

vent Mission from November 29 through

December 2.

I would like to again thank the Rosary and Altar

Society for a successful Christmas Craft Fair.

I would also like to thank our St. Columbanus stu-

dents who helped out. Many of the vendors com-

mented to me on how courteous and helpful the stu-

dents were. This is a wonderful reflection of our

school, faith, families, and parish. I again ask all of

our parents of school age children to consider send-

ing their children to our school. I was informed by

someone in my home town that the public high

school in its health class distributed contraceptives

to the students and told them to go to the Palisades

Mall and distribute them there as well. This is the

sick culture that pervades the public school system

in New York and many other states. I certainly

would make every sacrifice to send my child to a

Catholic school where the child’s dignity as a child

of God is honored and taught. Can we put a cost on

the value of our children’s spiritual and moral for-

mation? I thank God for the many sacrifices my

parents made to ensure their children’s formation in

the faith.

About St. Columbanus:

“Columbanus's impact had a long afterlife, and

was responsible ultimately for Ireland's reputation

as the land of saints and scholars. He wrote of Ire-

land's location in 'the Western regions of the

earth's farther strand' and used dramatic imagery

to portray the coming of Christianity to his home-

land. Christianity, like the sun, rose in the East.

Just as the sun's journey across the sky is com-

pleted when it reaches Ireland, the last footfall in

the West, so too the conversion of the Irish

marked the point at which the Church fulfilled its

mission to spread salvation to all peoples.” (from

Columbanus, by Tomas O Fiaich, p. 8)

Fr. Frank Samoylo
