On behalf of your Priests, Deacons, Religious Sisters and Staff, we extend to you

our prayerful best wishes for a very Merry Christmas. May the light of Christ’s

Birth shine brightly in your hearts! It is a joy to serve you at St. Columba

Parish!

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS GIFT Your annual Christmas Gift to your parish is deeply appreciated. It will cover

the cost of snow plowing and heating during the cold winter months. Thank

you for your generosity! God bless you!

THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST The Twenty-fifth Day of December,

When ages beyond number had run their course

from the creation of the world,

When God in the beginning created heaven and earth,

and formed man in his own likeness;

When century upon century had passed

since the Almighty set his bow in the clouds after the Great Flood,

as a sign of covenant and peace;

In the twenty-first century since Abraham, our father in faith,

came out of Ur of the Chaldees;

In the thirteenth century since the People of Israel were led by Moses

in the Exodus from Egypt;

Around the thousandth year since David was anointed King;

In the sixty-fifth week of the prophecy of Daniel;

In the one hundred and ninety-fourth Olympiad;

In the year seven hundred and fifty– two since the foundation of the City of Rome;

In the forty-second year of the reign of Caesar Octaviah Augustis,

the whole world being at peace,

JESUS CHRIST, eternal God and Son of the eternal Father,

desiring to consecrate the world by his most loving presence,

was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

and when nine months had passed since his conception, was born of the

Virgin Mary in Bethlehem of Judah, and was made man:

THE NATIVITY OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST according to the flesh.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

The Archdiocese of New York has begun a Renew & Rebuild Capital Campaign. The goal is to raise $200 million. Most of what will be raised (74%) will remain in the parishes. The Parish of St. Columba has begun to roll out this Campaign. Your fellow parishioners are making phone calls and arranging personal visits. Please give them a warm welcome! Among the projects we hope to complete: IN THE CHURCH: Paint the interior, remove carpeting and replace with new flooring, new kneelers, new light fixtures, renewed bathrooms, redo sanctuary with matching altar, pulpit, altar of repose and baptismal font. IN SCHOOL: Replace all windows with new energy efficient windows and blinds. ROOFING: Ensure all roofs are in good shape. Repair where needed. There will be NO Cardinal’s Appeal in 2018. It will be part of Renew & Rebuild. The Cardinal’s Appeal will resume in 2019. We will be in touch as time goes on with further updates!

POLISH WIGILIA (OPLATEK)

The Christmas Eve Wigilia Supper forms the focal point of the Polish Yuletide customs. Wigilia, which means vigil, commemorates the birth of Jesus. For Polish families, the meal starts when the eastern star appears through the parlor window to serve as a guide to the Birth of Jesus in the same manner as the star of Bethlehem was a guide to the Magi! The meal begins with the ancient tradition of breaking oplatek, a thin wafer, or bread of love. It is passed to the various members of the family who put it to their lips and wish each other Blessings for the upcoming year. These wafers are now available in the Rectory.
