On this fourth Sunday of Advent, on behalf of
my brothers in the ministry Fathers Martin Barkin,
Jeremy Mohler, Al Semler and Daniel Adjei, and my
brothers Deacons Joe Dougherty, Keith Kondrich, and
Herb Riley, let me wish every parishioner, neighbor
and friend a most blessed and joy-filled Christmas. In
three days we will once again celebrate the birth of our
Savior, Jesus, son of Mary, into our world and into our
hearts. We will celebrate in our churches with songs,
well-known readings from the Sacred Scriptures, and
the Eucharist. We will celebrate in our homes with
gift-sharing, family meals, story-telling, Christmas
trees, creche displays and the comfort of friends old
and new. Some will even go to celebrate Christ by
visiting sick family members in local hospitals or
nursing homes, and caring for the poor and homeless
in shelters and soup kitchens. In all these ways we
return the love of Christ which we so richly receive to
our sisters and brothers.
As the bulletin notes elsewhere, we will have
12 Masses in our “eight great churches of the East.”
There will be eight Masses on Christmas Eve and four
on Christmas Day. Pick the time and the church which
is most convenient for you and your household. If you
are not attending Mass in your home parish, please feel
free to drop your collection envelop in the basket. As
we do every Sunday of the year, our ushers and
money-counters will make sure that your envelop will
find its way to your parish, whether in our grouping
#216 or elsewhere in the region.
We hope to have many visitors at our liturgies.
Please be welcoming and hospitable to any who are
new to our churches. Make them feel comfortable.
Answer any questions they may have, especially about
our journey toward one merged parish in 2020 through
the On Mission for the Church Alive planning
process. Never fail to be hospitable to strangers,
because by such acts some have welcomed angels
(Hebrews 13:2).
Music is a special part of the liturgies of
Christmas. Our various choirs will help our
congregations to celebrate prior to several Masses.
Many, many thanks to our choir members, cantors,
musicians and organists for their hard work of
preparation to help us remember that “Jesus is the
reason for the season.”
In a tradition that goes back to Bishop Dearden
in the Diocese of Pittsburgh, a second collection is
taken up on Christmas for needy children cared for by
Catholic Charities. This second collection also counts
toward each parish’s Parish Share Program
assessment. As was pointed out in last week’s bulletin,
our parishes are significantly behind in meeting the
PSP 2019 goals. In the spirit of this season of giving,
please be as generous as you can.
wonderful stories of Jesus’ birth in the Gospels, and to
be present to God who is always with us. In the
Catholic liturgical tradition, the season of Christmas
only begins on Christmas Eve, and continues to the
Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, Sunday, January 12.
One personal custom I developed years ago is
that as I receive Christmas cards throughout December
I do not open them or read them. I put them in a
special basket. Then on Christmas Day, after all the
Masses are celebrated, the collections put away and the
church buildings closed, I treat myself to a glass of
wine and slowly open each and every card I have
received. I read all the family letters and linger over
any photos of new babies, graduations or family
reunions. In such a quiet way I appreciate all the good
wishes and love parishioners and friends send my way.
Again, a blessed, healthy and holy Christmas
to you and yours!

THE 2ND COLLECTION on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day
is the “Special Collection for Children of the Diocese.”
This collection supports a variety of educational and
spiritual programs, ministries and services offered by the
Diocese that respond to the contemporary needs of
young people in our area. The proceeds of this collection
are credited to the payment of our Parish Share Goal.
Thus, it is a benefit not only to the children and youth of
the Diocese, but to the immediate parish family as well.

EIGHT GREAT CHURCHES OF THE EAST T-SHIRT
The T-Shirt you see is the one worn by all of our
parishioners who participated with us in the Amen to
Action program on the day after Thanksgiving (including
Fr. Almade). We literally had people from other churches
and areas ask if they could buy one. We thought some of
you might like to have one as well as it represents all eight
of our beautiful churches (keep in mind, it will soon be a
collector’s item!) If you would, we will place another
order if we have enough interest. Please call Natalie at

provide the size you would like, and make your $12.00

Mass. We invite the children of our
parishes to attend this beautiful
Mass with their families. Children are encouraged to

The Love and Hope of Christmas is meant for you! Join us! discovering Christ...starting in February 2020
Have you noticed the simple, intriguing notes in the
bulletins over the past few weeks? One of our notes
was, "Life is a journey. Where are you headed?"
These notes were all placed to peak your interest and
entice you to find out more about your faith and your
personal relationship with Christ. Our grouping has
embarked on a wonderful journey of faith and we'd
like you all to be a part of it! We will be bringing
ChristLIfe, a dynamic, Catholic, evangelical interactive
series to our grouping starting in February 2020!
ChristLife was designed for participants to refocus their
faith life and gain a deeper, closer and more personal
relationship with God. Over seven weeks, we hope to
help our participants to learn to love God, our neighbor
and ourselves in a whole new way! Please continue to
read the bulletin for more information on how YOU
can take part in this transformative series, too! God
wants you to join us.... please listen to His call!
PLEASE REMEMBER OUR PARISHES
AT CHRISTMAS As we find ourselves in the midst of a season of giving and sharing, please remember our parishes in a special way. Hopefully, as you reflect upon what your parish has meant to you and your family, you will see this season as an opportunity to respond to your parish’s needs. Your willingness to give back to God in gratitude for all that God has done for you is deeply appreciated.
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY COLLECTION
